James Gunn's The Suicide Squad was met with divide when it was initally announced, but since then many have warmed up to the Guardians of the Galaxy director's new take on the team. With several old cast members returning for the sequel, it has got fans thinking - maybe this isn't a hard reboot after all.

Following this morning's announement that Viola Davis is reprising her role as Amanda Waller in Gunn's film, Discussing Film is now reporting that Joel Kinnaman will be back as Rick Flag as well. The actor, who has appeared in Altered Carbon and Hanna since 2016's Suicide Squad hit theaters, is one of the several characters returning as part of the new ensemble.

All the casting reveals currently confirmed are straight from David Ayer's predecessor, with the notable exception of Idris Elba's Deadshot. In addition, Collider has already unveiled the sequel's new roster, of which includes King Shark and Polka Dot Man. It will no doubt be interesting to see how the film pans out before production starts this year.

Does this casting announcement make you more excited for The Suicide Squad?

@DnA - poor choices in movie roles imo.

He was great on The Killing tv show. He's mad good on Hanna too.

Lame. But maybe Gunn can make something of him in this one.

He's NOT a terrible actor, but he WAS one of the worst parts of SS.

He was good in Altered Carbon. Terrible in Suicide Squad, but so was the material he had to work with.

After today, you can't believe any casting you read about this movie unless WB says it.

With everyone returning for the next film, next week we'll hear of Katana and Killer Croc coming back. I personally enjoyed Katana so I'm alright with her return and I have no problem with seeing more Karen Fukuhara.

@BlackIceJoe - She was way under utilized . I would love her to come back as the total badass she should be, feared and respected by the team.

The cast was not the worst part of the first Suicide Squad... so with a good script I am sure it can be at least interesting

Rick Flagg was the most unintentionally hilarious character in Squad specifically because the actor was trying wayyyyyy harder than everyone else to make Ayer's garbage pile tone and mission statement work and it backfires on him in every single scene he's in

He was actually really good in Altered Carbon, I’m sure he will do better this time around.

There were a few scenes in Act 2 of SS where I thought he was good and could turn his performance around, but overall he was not great and the third act was just so bad for everyone it's not really fair to hold that against him.

We shall see what a better director can do with him.
