Suicide Squad director David Ayer has always maintained that his original vision for the much-maligned DC Comics movie was significantly different to the theatrical version Warner Bros. would ultimately release, claiming to have made "an amazing movie" that "just scared the shit out of the executives."
The success of the #RealeaseTheSnyderCut movement prompted fans to rally behind the filmmaker in an attempt to convince Warner Bros. to give Suicide Squad the Zack Snyder's Justice League treatment, but the studio has made it very clear that it has no intention of allowing Ayer to revisit the film.
While the chances of the "Ayer Cut" ever seeing the light of day remain somewhere between slim and none (and slim is packing his bags), it seems a completed director's cut of movie does exist.
Ayer has now taken to Twitter to confirm that he screened his version of Suicide Squad for one of the @ReleaseTheAyerCut Twitter account's admins.
"No bs. 2hrs 23m of incredible! A totally different story! Forget the theatrical. This movie has a deeper message," the fan wrote, before adding that Jared Leto's take on the Joker "stole the show." Ben Affleck's Batman is also said to have a more substantial role, although it sounds like the cut isn't fully complete, as some VFX shots still need work.
This is certainly an intriguing development, but it probably won't have the desired effect. In fact, we'd say there's a decent chance Warner Bros. Discovery's new management will dig in even deeper when they find out that Ayer screened this unlicensed cut to a member of the public.
Then again, if a studio feels there's money to be made, they will tend to play ball, so maybe there is hope for the "Ayer Cut" after all.
