THE SUICIDE SQUAD Concept Art Appears To Confirm Idris Elba Was Initially Eyed To Play Deadshot THE SUICIDE SQUAD Concept Art Appears To Confirm Idris Elba Was Initially Eyed To Play Deadshot

Newly revealed concept art from The Suicide Squad shows Deadshot in the movie's final battle, and it definitely appears as if the initial plan was for Idris Elba to take over the role from Will Smith.

When Idris Elba was cast in The Suicide Squad, it was initially reported he was set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot. The actor's busy schedule meant he was unable to reprise his Suicide Squad role, a shame when it seemed logical that Floyd Lawton would be among the returning villains from the 2016 movie.

Of course, we'd later discover that Elba was playing Bloodsport, the criminal who shot Superman, and not Deadshot as those early stories had claimed.

The actor did a great job in the role, but pretty much everyone agreed that the two characters were indistinguishable. Elba was playing Deadshot in all but name (he even had a near-identical relationship with his daughter), and some newly revealed concept art suggests the Thor: Love and Thunder star was indeed eyed to take over as the assassin.

The character in the artwork below - shared on Beehance by David Levy - shows Deadshot in that final setpiece, and the actor playing him looks a lot more like Elba than he does Smith (unless the latter intended to grow his hair out).

Both Gunn and Elba have said it was the right decision not to recast Deadshot, giving Elba the chance to do his own thing rather than follow in the footsteps of who had come before. We're guessing it was the plan very early on that he take over from Smith, only for things to change, likely when Smith told Warner Bros. he would like to eventually reprise the role.

We may never know for sure, but it would be good to see Deadshot and Bloodsport share the screen at some point in the not-too-distant future. Now Gunn is in charge of DC Studios, we're sure there are plans for these Task Force X characters, either on the big screen, small screen, or both.

If they manage to get them both in a movie together, a lot of furn can be had between them squaring off (even if Bloodsport already measured dicks with Peacemaker, to very fun results).

I wasn't sure about John Cena playing Peacemaker but after The Suicide Squad, King Shark and him were my favourite characters.

The show is good as well, got the last two episodes of season 1 to watch.

@marvel72 - I only really found him engaging in his own show, personally.

@dagenspear - I was just dreading John Cena in the movie but he turned out better than I thought he would.

Yeah, Peacemaker is a good show, some good twists.

Looking forward to seeing what Gunn does with DC Studios or whatever it's called now.

I’m glad they didn’t recast him but instead found a different role for him. I hate recasts that aren’t necessary and will always prefer a new character be introduced if the original star jumps off board.

I hate it with Bond and I would have hated it here

It's all good because whoever this guy played it was Axel-ent. Get it?

Considering the face is in shadows, I think the idea is that this is when they didn't know if they'd get will Smith back.

Imagine if Chris Rock was recast as Deadshot? Oh the bitter irony.

This doesn’t confirm anything. The actor’s face is obscured. Guaranteed this was when they weren’t sure if Will Smith would be available to reprise his role
