THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Teases More Spinoffs After PEACEMAKER

Peacemaker is set to premiere on HBO Max early next year, and director James Gunn has now strongly hinted that more spinoffs featuring characters from The Suicide Squad might be in the works.

The Suicide Squad introduced the world to a (mostly) new take on DC Comics' mercenary group Task Force X, and John Cena's Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, emerged as one of the highlights for many fans.

The character was gunned down by Bloodsport (Idris Elba) towards the end of the movie, but the post-credits scene revealed that he actually survived, and Cena will suit-up as the unhinged vigilante for his own HBO Max series early next year (check out the new trailer here).

James Gunn's movie was well received by critics, but didn't fare quite so well at the box office, leaving the prospect of a sequel up in the air. However, if Peacemaker proves to be a hit there's every chance we'll see some of Smith's teammates down the line, and it sounds like more spinoff shows may already be in the works.

Gunn responded with the following Tweet when asked about the possibility of other spinoffs following Peacemaker.

It's not exactly confirmation and there's always a chance he's just having a bit of fun, but there have been rumors that some kind of project featuring Bloodsport is in early development, which could be what Gunn is hinting at here.

Ultimately, it'll probably all depend on how Peacemaker performs on the streaming service, but it's hard to imagine Warner Bros. sitting on great characters like King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) and Ratcatcher (Daniela Melchior) for too long. Oh, and Gunn also confirmed that TDK (Nathan Fillion) is indeed still alive!

I think Vigilante might get his own spin-off if he proves to be popular in this considering his solo series lasted 50 issues.

I hope there ends up being something like Bloodsport and Deadshot. If they can get Will Smith back, which I don't think will be a huge problem

@DannRamm113 - doubt Will Smith will be down to get involved in another "entanglement"

@JFerguson - don't see the problem. I mean, the only reason he didn't come back was scheduling conflicts.

Is it just me or are some people's comments just not showing up? I'm seeing people's replies to comments that aren't even there.

I want more Idris. I might be in the minority but thought Bloodsport was pretty badass. Just watched The Harder They Fall. He was awesome in it

Was the movie that popular? I mean I know James Gunn is, but I thought the movie was all kinds of meh. Better than the first but... not very memorable or even really good. I liked the Ratcatcher flashback and... umm....I'm sure there was another good bit.

I'd watch a Ratcatcher show, probably. Get Taika both in front of and behind the camera and it'll probably be worth a season or two, maybe.

@GwenLantern

James Gunn isn't popular. Outside of comic book fans, he still isn't a household name.

I really need to see how Peacemaker is before committing to watching another Suicide Squad spin-off. The Suicide Squad was a good movie. Full stop. Yet I didn't feel the overwhelming desire to see any of those characters ever again. Not that they weren't good. I just had my fill of them in that movie and wanted to move on. Then Peacemaker becomes a thing. I check out the trailer and teasers and while not overwhelmed by any of it, have decided to give it a chance based on it being a James Gunn helmed property. Yet I don't have an "infinite hype" attitude about it either. It's just a thing I will watch and hope to be entertained. I hope the show makes me hype for more. But at this point I'm very "meh".

I'll say what I said in the Shang Chi thread before it got deleted:

I rewatched TSS and Shang Chi recently and both were good CBMs, just a bit overrated. 2021 was pretty disappointing CBM-wise despite the consistent content. TSS suffered from Gunn not having much restraint. Shang Chi had some great action, but was also handicapped from the joke mandate (the airplane scene, anyone?), the BMW race through the forest, and the third act CGI battle.

Regardless, they were solid movies and I'm looking forward to see more from Gunn and Dustin.

Ooh, I bet it'll be a deep dive, hard hitting character piece delving into the backstory and psychological development of TDK, and what's it like mentally and physically to literally lose parts of yourself.

...or it'll just be a running gag with him jacking himself off with his own floating arm. Yeah, that's probably more likely.

I dont know I was interested in a sequel but now after seeing what Peacemaker is it’s kind of killed my interest mostly. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t kind of affecting my excitement for Guardians 3 as well

Watched TSS last night and it just gets better with each viewing. Such a great film and honestly? It’s possibly Gunn’s best work to date.

I hope Gunn gets to tackle another feature film. He works wonders with whatever budget he's given and Suicide Squad showed that what he's done with Guardians wasn't a fluke. If anything, it would be nice to see him tackle a project that isn't quite as similar to SS/Guardians 1 and really challenges him to tell a story less reliant on the whole "bad person has to do good" angle (which he's already done with Guardians 2)

I'm having major doubts that Gunn will return to Marvel after he is finished with the Guardians film and Christmas special.

I know he hasn't been in a Suicide Squad movie and only had a cameo, but I so want to see Deathstroke finally getting the respect he deserves and a HBO Max show would be perfect for him.
