ARGYLLE's Matthew Vaughn Interested In Directing SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW After Milly Alcock Casting

Argylle and Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn may be a contender to helm The Authority, but he's also interested in tackling Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow after Milly Alcock's recent casting. Check it out!

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to comic book movies after helming the likes of Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and X-Men: First Class and there was a time when he was even on Warner Bros.' radar for what eventually became Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.

The filmmaker remains busy but is rumoured to be among those DC Studios is eyeing to take charge of The Authority. However, talking to BroBible's Post Credit Podcast, Vaughn confirmed he has his eye on a very different DCU movie.

"I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan," he said when the prospect of helming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was put to him. "Met with her for this other project we’re working on - she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director."

"That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie...the director should be casting the movie," Vaughn added. "I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director."

It's a valid point, but the decision to pick Supergirl before a director is attached to her movie is something James Gunn likely learned from Marvel Studios. In Captain America: Civil War alone, both Black Panther and Spider-Man were cast by the Russo Brothers before Ryan Coogler and Jon Watts helmed their respective solo outings.

While Vaughn is a fan of Alcock's and a self-proclaimed Superman fanboy, it doesn't sound like he's keen on helming a superhero movie where he doesn't have full control over who plays who (which could be a problem as far as The Authority is concerned).

"I was asked about doing The Flash way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast - if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero," he says. "But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing...so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it."

That sounds somewhat promising, anyway, but DC Studios is thought to be searching for a female director to adapt Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, likely taking Vaughn out of the running.

Since Alcock was cast, we've heard that Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran flew several actors out to Atlanta to audition on the Superman: Legacy set, with all of them donning Supergirl's iconic costume. It's not confirmed but we've heard rumblings about chemistry tests with David Corenswet also taking place.

This new Supergirl movie is based on Tom King’s hit Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow run published between 2021 and 2022. It doesn't have a confirmed release date but is expected to begin shooting later this year.

@UniqNo - Last time DC let a female director direct a female superhero film we got WW84 and BOP which underperformed. Will be surprised if they are going to risk it again.

@mastakilla39 - Both of your examples were crippled by the Covid pandemic.

@UniqNo - Not BOP it came out in the early pandemic phase where theaters had no limit or restrictions. WW84 would have flopped like Aquaman 2 kt was a shit movie.

barbie doesnt do shit for female directors becuz its a rare success. the marvels flopped and she was the 1st black female director to be given 200 mil+.

GTFO with that SJW crap.

@mastakilla39 - not sure what's going on with my comments today, but I'll try and condense it.

Youre right, there were no legal restrictions in place for covid, but the general public were very well aware after a few months of reports already. Look at the other things that came out that week. Thats my opinion but I'll post you a journalist opinion link after. It's common sense.

Aquaman 2 is probably breaking even..the only one to have done in the couple years..still not a good look though, but Gunns announcment undercut it and post pandemic super heromovies have been having a tougher time. Super hero fatigue is also a part of it.

Im no SJW, so you can [frick] off with that one, but im just reading the room. If the subtitle is woman of tomorrow, then there's no way its going to male unless he's part of a duo with another woman like the first captain Marvel.

Just my opinion, but im confident enough to put a bet on it.

The way Gunn was talking about watching HOTD when thinking about WoT and imagining Mily Alcock as that version of Supergirl makes me think that he'll end up directing it. Even if he doesn't even know it yet, I think he might want to.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 1/31/2024, 7:45 AM
@ObserverIO - He really wanted Superman back in the day when him and Millar had a plan. Could be a decent spot to still tackle the stuff he wanted.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 1/31/2024, 12:46 PM
@ObserverIO - Doubt Gunn will be directing, it was already hard enough for him to commit to directing Superman Legacy and Peacemaker S2. He said that he rather lead people like Kevin Feige did the MCU and let new directors play with the universe. Next film he will probably direct is the next crossover just to make sure all the films connect, then he'll let the DCU lead itself.

Subtle Ezra burn there, love it!
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 7:51 AM
@UniqNo - I think the Matthew Vaughn version might have actually ended up making money.

No Ezra (major problem) and a movie that made sense (as it probably would have done with Vaughn and Goldman) and that didn't expect the audience to have seen and understood Justice League from the opening sequence, also featuring Keaton as Batman.

That actually could have been a very big film.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 1/31/2024, 8:00 AM
@ObserverIO - Probably, but Gunn's undercutting announcment killed what little hype there was for the DCEU movies last year, and Flash was one that was pushed back and back for so many years already, so i doubt it would have killed it in the box office regardless. So many other things at play. A clean slate is what's needed i guess. I've come around to that, but i still think Gunn and Safran should have waited till Comic Con this summer before letting the public know their plans. Let the rumours fly, it doesn't hurt their work.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/31/2024, 7:49 AM
Na. Doubt they go the male route but if they did, Dan Trachtenberg would be more interesting. Bryce Dallas Howard’s phone should be ringing though.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 1/31/2024, 7:54 AM
@GhostDog - yeah , I doubt that too but I would take Trachtenberg (especially after his work on Prey) over Vaughn…

I like him but I don’t know if his sensibilities woukd entirely fit the story they are basing the movie on.
ObserverIO

Everyone mentioning Bryce Dallas Howard, smh, as a feminist, if she does get a call for this she should demand to direct a male-led movie instead. She should say "Oh Woman of Tomorrow, I love that book, you should get Matthew Vaughn to direct it or just direct it yourself James, I'd love to see that movie, but I think I'll take Batman thank you very much. Get rid of Andy Muschietti and give me Batman. Thanks again, love you, byeeeeee!"

@ObserverIO - Whaaaat are you talking about?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 10:07 AM
@ClintThaHamster - Everyone is suggesting Bryce Dallas Howard for WoT for the single fact that she is a woman and it is a female-led movie.

I was suggesting that she ask to direct a male-led movie like Batman instead.
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 1/31/2024, 10:27 AM
@ObserverIO - But why would it be a particularly feminist thing to do to refuse to direct a film written by and starring other women?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 10:41 AM
@ClintThaHamster - In the interests of progression. It's a good start to have female-led movies with female directors, writers, etc. celebrating women. That's the first step. But then the next step is to be able to have female-led movies be so normalised that they are directed by men and women and to have female directors so normalised that they direct movies led by both men and women.

Otherwise it's segregation.
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 1/31/2024, 10:55 AM
@ObserverIO - But men have directed female-led films since the dawn of cinema, and women have directed male-led films for almost as long (Point Break, Hurt Locker, After Dark, Wayne's World, Real Genius, K-19: The Widowmaker, Lords of Dogtown, Private Parts.)

I think most of the people recommending Howard here might just be basing it on the fact that she's proven to be a reliable sci fi director on Mandalorian and they'd like to see her direct a feature.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 11:04 AM
@ClintThaHamster - Forgive me, but that's naive. She wasn't brought up by fans as a choice of director for Superman Legacy. It's because she's a woman and that's the problem.

You bring up films like Point Break and Hurt Locker by Kathryn Bigelow. She is a classic example. Every time there has been a female led cbm brought up since the internet began, Kathryn Bigelow's name comes up as a possible director. And only then.
Yet her best work involves male leads. But no-one ever suggests her for Batman or Green Lantern or Superman, films that she would be perfect for. Only Catwoman and Wonder Woman, Black Widow and Captain Marvel.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 11:06 AM
Bryce Dallas Howard has now replaced Kathryn Bigelow as everyone's go-to female director. That's how she's seen. The female director. The progressive thing to do would be to move past that.
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 1/31/2024, 11:20 AM
@ObserverIO - Big picture, I agree with you, folks tend to think of "girls for girl movies, boys for boy movies," but I think the former is due to the fact that, again, men have been directing female-written, female-lead movies for 100 years. Personally, I think it's a good thing that people are thinking of women as the first choice to direct anything, as that hasn't been the case until very recently.

Folks seem to want to believe that a decade or two of progress means that we've achieved true equality and we can all just stop working, but you don't undo 2000 years of cultural baggage in 15 or 20 years. We've got to keep pushing. Ruth Bader Ginsburg said that when she's asked "how many female SCOTUS justices will be enough, she would answer "When there are nine." I'm saying that women should be considered for every male-led AND female-led film, and refusing to work on the latter won't get us any closer to the former.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 11:41 AM
@ClintThaHamster - "When there are nine" lol, I love Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

No, refusing to work on the latter won't get us any closer to the former... unless you ask for Batman instead.

True if Bryce Dallas Howard (or indeed any of the other notable female directors out there) simply said no to every female-led movie then what would happen is that the calls and offers would dry up and they'd be left on their ass eating ramen.
What they need to do is say "No, but what else you got?"

Like Emerald Fennel, one of the best writer/directors out there right now. She got a job working for Bad Robot's DC line of TV shows and what did they give her? Zatanna. Her work is dark AF and they give her the lightest of all the characters they had. She should've said "No, but I'll pitch you a Constantine or a Swamp Thing" and then we would have all been blessed, because that would have been genuinely awesome.

Well... I mean it would've probably been cancelled with all the other Bad Robot DC stuff, but it would've been hypothetically awesome.
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 1/31/2024, 11:59 AM
@ObserverIO - I guess I've just always been more of an incrementalist with that kind of thing. Take the job you're offered, kick ass, make a shitload of money, and THEN start making demands. BDH has directed 5 episodes of television. Male or female, I don't feel like she's in a position to make demands. She's got to get her foot in the door and prove her worth before she starts throwing her weight around.

Fair enough on wanting control over casting atleast….

I do think his sensibilities don’t entirely fit the Supergirl story they are telling (atleast going by the comic run it’s based on) but he could be a good match for The Authority.

Anyway , I think it’s rumored that the Supergirl director is Kate Herron which could work given her work on Loki S1 (she’s also gonna be on Last of Us S2).
Origame
Origame - 1/31/2024, 8:50 AM
The point being made about civil war doesn't work. Yes, it was the Russo brothers who cast black panther and spiderman before the directors for those films were hired. But that's because they were first being used in civil war, and the directors for that movie chose them.

Unless we know supergirl is gonna appear in a project already, it's a poor comparison.

@ImNotaBot - we don't know that.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 10:26 AM
@Origame - I think it was confirmed with her casting.

eh maybe says so on his website:

"Clark Kent isn’t the only Kryptonian appearing in Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated superhero reboot 'Superman: Legacy' as 'House of the Dragon' actress Milly Alcock is in talks to play Supergirl in the film from writer-director James Gunn."

https://www.thewrap.com/supergirl-actress-milly-alcock-superman-legacy/

Of course that isn't exactly confirmation because he generally uses his anus with which to speak.

But the Variety article said:

"Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran flew multiple actors, including Meg Donnelly, to Atlanta for old-fashioned, onscreen auditions on the 'Superman: Legacy' set."

They also say that "DC looks to attach a director in the coming weeks."

https://variety.com/2024/film/news/supergirl-milly-alcock-superman-legacy-1235891714/

Wikipedia (also not always reliable) says that she will "debut in another DCU project, reportedly Superman: Legacy".

I think it's generally assumed to be Superman Legacy and they just forgot to confirm it with the press announcement. But the fact she flew to audition on the set of Superman Legacy pretty much confirms it anyway. Otherwise they would say that she flew to the set of Woman of Tomorrow or whatever other film she would be making her debut in.

And Superman Legacy does make way more sense than Batman: The Brave and the Bold or The Authority.
