Al Gough Calls Smallville Finale "Confusing"; Comments On Conflict With WB Film Division!

Talking to TV Line about ABC’s new Charlie’s Angels series, Smallville co-creator Al Gough has shared his thoughts on the finale, as well as revealing how it would have originally ended and the relationship between the television and movie divisions over at Warner Bros.

Gough copped to not keeping up on the show, especially during the past year as he groomed ABC's Angels, so he "thought a lot of [the series finale] was confusing." But, he allows, "It's hard to wrap up any show that's gone 10 years, and I think they did the best they could." Gough confirmed for me that back when he and Miles Millar (also an EP on Angels) first launched Smallville, "The final image was always [Clark Kent] suiting up [as Superman] and flying away - but back in the day there was going to be more of thing with him and Lex (played by Rosenbaum).... It all came down to the Lex-Clark dynamic." Gough said that even though "it was always a dance" with Warner Bros.' feature film division as to how much Superman imagery the TV series could evoke, he and Millar always had the green light to, when the time eventually came, bust out the Supersuit and send Clark to the sky.

What do you guys think? The Smallville finale was disappointing to many fans to say the least (the long awaited debut of the Superman suit boiled down to a few far off CGI shots and a shirt being torn open) but would Gough's version have been any better? Not if Tom Welling was still unwilling to wear the suit! Be sure to share your thoughts on all this in the usual place.

I thought the finale was pretty good. I wish they whole Darkseid thing would have been better because that was way too rushed. Its like when he becomes Superman he can move planets and stuff it just makes no sense.

i enjoyed smalliville just wished they would have cut out all of the filler episodes if they did that they could have added more to the story instead of jumping around making things over complicated.

I liked the finale I just wish we saw Welling literally standing in the full suit and not just some cartoon floating beside a plane.

The Finale was not confusing at all. Gough is just mad that he didn't come up with it and/or that he gave up on the series before it's end.

Smallville should've ended since season 2...all that followed was nothing but prolonged crap that spat on almost every character they twisted into the show...
The worst of all was this young JLA crap and how Deathstroke was poorly almost offensively portrayed!!

This confirms that Warner Bros is THE most incompetent company on the face of the earth.

According to WB was unable to showcase welling in the suit because of the upcoming reboot? Yet WB has FULL CONTROL over both the show and the movie.

This is why I hate Warner Bros. We waited 10 years for nothing.

"he and Millar always had the green light to, when the time eventually came, bust out the Supersuit and send Clark to the sky."

Smallville had the greenlight to use the suit in the end.

The only reason they didn't is Welling didn't want to.

You want to hate someone? Hate Welling.

the finale was pretty bad...and i've been a defender of the show from the start....the cgi suit bs was unforgivable..and now knowing they had the greenlight to show the suit from the beginning makes it worse

I knew that the ending should have seen Kent suiting up as Superman with the final shot him flying away into the sky, something along those lines.

PS: Nice song, Grif. It fits.

it was one of the worst finale's i've seen. they spent most the episode doing flash backs after setting up for darkseid. the battle was a 1 hit k.o. and the lex thing was one of the biggest pieces of bullsh*t. They introduced the L.O.D giving me hope it wasnt going to completely suck, and yet smallville continued with letting me down. I watched the show from episode 1 and kept watching despite my better judgement. They had no reason to have the last episode of the series be nothing but a recap of 10 seasons.

I really thought it would end like all the Superman movies. He'd fly past the camera, nod and smile, and that would be it. To me that was the only ending that made sense.

As a longtime fan of smallville over its 10 year run, I look back at it as one of the worst written, worst thought out, most fan face spitting shows ever made.

Smallville should have ended in the third season finale - Clark accept the training by Jor El and leaves the farm/city.

The seasons ahead were pure crap! And the series finale made me hate everyone involved in the show - WHATAPEACEOFSHI...

That's it!

Al Gough thought it was confusing... I'm still trying to figure out why Air Force One was flying around when a freaking planet was hurdling toward Earth.

Let's not forget how Green Arrow takes down three of Darkseid's baddies with one arrow. That was a joke.

And why the heck is Air Force One allowing reporters aboard while the president and his staff are discussing ways to save the Earth?

That episode had too many plot holes to even type.

I lost interest in the show somewhere around the middle of the fourth season. . . but I was only holding out hope during that first half.

The finale was dissapointing, as was most of Season 10. But I did love the final scene (see Grif's video above) and I think if we had seen him in the suit properly before that (not some crappy CGI one) it would've been much better. That, and none of that "I'm Superman, and I'm gonna move this planet away from another planet in a matter of 2 seconds" shit.
