Bryan Singer On MAN OF STEEL And X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Bryan Singer is glad the "giant-sized" pressure currently lodged firmly on the shoulders of Zack Snyder is not on him. Speaking to Total Film, Singer shares his feelings about not getting the opportunity to make a sequel to Superman Returns. Plus, there's a small bit of discussion about X-Men:Days of Future Past revealed in the conversation. Here's what Singer had to say about his take on Superman and his third X-Men film.
“If this was a few year ago, I might have [felt disappointed] - but so much time has passed. I’ve done two movies [since Superman Returns], I’ll be on my third movie now in the [X-Men] universe… so whilst it would have been nice then, now I’m actually genuinely looking forward to seeing Zack [Snyder]’s movie [Man Of Steel]. At my heart I’m a fan. I’ve always been a fan.)

“The original Superman movie was the one that educated me - the first act of Donner’s Superman was what inspired me to take X-Men so seriously. Now I get to go see a Superman movie and I don’t have to [frick]ing make it! [laughs] They’re not easy! He’s not an easy character!

“I got very nostalgic with my movie but even if you take it in another direction it’s very challenging… inherently he’s such a good guy… what’s easier about X-Men is that they’re all so conflicted. What’s going to be interesting in the next X-Men movie is that the characters are incredibly polarised.”

If he was such a fan then he must of known that the film he should of made was man of steel, not a rip off semi sequel to the reeve films,it was lazy work continuing the reeve films and not coming up with something fresh and new like we have now

@levitikuz

Singer is promoting and Millar has taken it upon himself to answer the questions that he's agreed to answer interviews. This is actually the place for those answers. Does the site well anyway.

Millar and Singer are trying to create a second Marvel universe. They're going to be everywhere. Deal with it.

From a technical standpoint, "Superman Returns" was fantastic - the special effects were great. I don't have a problem with Singer's decision to jump off from "Superman II." The problem lay in a weak story and his heavy handed "father-son" motif that seemed to get hammered home every five minutes. And poor Kevin Spacey was saddled with playing Gene Hackman but without any of the humor that Hackman brought to the role.

I know it's not the popular opinion, but actually like Superman Returns. For what it was, Superman 5, I enjoyed it. Sure the whole kid thing was a stretch, especially when Lois didn't know he was Superman's kid. But if you look at it as being in line with the other 4, Superman did the memory wipe kiss before. All in all, I'm just really looking forward to Man of Steel, and Days of Future Past.

Superman Returns had some good bits but there were many misteps.. Superman's son.? Nobody wants to see that. Superman getting beat up by thugs.? Nobody wants to see that.. A bullet bouncing off of Superman's eye.? Stupid.. And why the hell didn't Parker Posey play Lois Lane.?

"He’s not an easy character!"
"what’s easier about X-Men is that they’re all so conflicted."
So you're pretty much saying that other stand alone movies like iron man, hulk and batman are not easy to make? Well excuse me Singer they were better than your [frick]ing Superman Returns.

Way to bring up 3 movies not mentioned once in the article genius.

I never understood why Singer tried to continue from the Donner/Reeve series. That series began in 1978. Superman Returns took place in 2006. Stupid. Then the whole tone of the film was strange. Especially the weird sepia 30s feel he gave Metropolis.

Ive never being a fan of Superman, and never saw the original movies and you know what? curiously I really liked Superman returns.

I can understand that many fans wanted something modern/current/fresh/darker, but I dont get all the hate to the movie.

The action was pretty solid and the movie had some awesome shots here and there.

and about the x-men movies, we all know Fox never gave him the budget the x-men deserved, so now that he probably has a big budget for Days of future, we will finally see what Singer is capable of with the X-men with the right money. Im sure he will deliver the best x-men movie of them all, I just want to have the teaser trailer to start showing the haters that he's gonna bring something really epic and intense, so all the hate towards him will stop for once and for all

@LP4. Yeah dont get how him supposedly not being an easy character equal not having action and adding a bastard child to the story. Oh and the ability to lift a giant mountain sized piece of kryptonite. He had some good scenes in his x-men films but once again lacked action and it felt like it focused too much on romance/relationships. Don't get why he doesn't do more stuff like he did with the Nightcrawler intro. In summary not a big fan of the guy, he needs to read some source material.

I'm hoping Man of Steel is awesome, and Superman Returns can be swept under the carpet where it belongs.

Maybe in a few years the X-men franchise can get a new lease on life too. It needs it.

While I haven't really seen any of the Superman movies, it's obvious that Singer was trying to pay homage to the Donner/Reeve films when he did Returns.

Now here's the interesting thing: Singer had an idea for a sequel, and according to him, it would've been to Returns what Wrath of Khan was to the first Star Trek movie.

Just throwing that out there.

Or how about people stop posting articles on Bryan Singer period - he's made three underwhelming comicbook movies at this point and he'll probably make a couple more.

To the people complaining about an articles content 2 things: 1. If you don't like the content of an article, why bother clicking on it only to complain?
2. If you're unhappy about that certain people, and topics aren't getting covered, why don't you just make one yourself. Problem solved.

He says he's made two movies like it's been a long time, but one of them hasn't even come out yet and Superman Returns was 7 years ago. In 7 whole years we've only had Valkyrie? Superman Returns burnt Singer more than he'll admit.
DOFP should be a return to form.
