Henry Cavill Will Reportedly No Longer Play SUPERMAN In Warner Bros.' DC Movie Universe

Well... shit. Fans have been wondering whether Ben Affleck would return as Batman for a long time, but THR has now dropped the bombshell that Henry Cavill will likely not reprise the role of Superman...

According to THR, Henry Cavill will not be returning to play Superman in Warner Bros.' DC Films Universe.

Though neither side has confined this, the trade reports that "talks broke down for a cameo in 'Shazam!' due to scheduling conflicts, and the door is now closing on other potential appearances for the actor."

In addition, sources claim that the studio has decided to shift focus to the planned Supergirl movie, and don't intend to put another solo Man of Steel project into production for several years.

Ultimately, this all seems to stem from WB's decision to attempt a soft reboot of the current incarnation of the DCEU, as it's come to be known. Though the likes of Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Gal Gadot are still on board, it looks like Ben Affleck, and now Cavill, have hung up their capes for good.

Some saw this coming after Cavill signed on to star in Netflix's The Witcher - although this report indicates that the Mission: Impossible - Fallout actor only committed to that project after Warners announced their change in strategy.

Whatever the reason, this will not go down well with fans. Despite many taking issue with the iconic DC hero's characterization in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, most would agree that Cavill has done a fine job in the role.

If true Stupid WB!!!!!!

Henry was the backbone IMO! If this is true it is time to reboot! Keep some key players like Gal and Momoa.

@TheInsaneCipher - No I have always been on the side of wisdom, I just have a love/hate relationship with WB.

I love MOS to me it is one of the best CBMs out there, BvS was solid for me as well.....but JL was a mess on many levels.

When you lose two key players like Affleck and Ben...it is time to reboot.

@AyMan - when Justice League opened so softly, this was the most logical conclusion... people were turned off by Snyder’s Batman v. Superman, and it didn’t make sense moving forward to try and tell audiences “Hey, we know that you didn’t like them the last two times, but this time will be different!”

Recasting both roles makes the next appearance by either character an easier sell.

@Chewtoy - Yup. People won't see it now, but this is a bittersweet end.

@Chewtoy -

Exactly.

Trying to pretend the events of BvS never happened and that everyone loved Superman and he was a beacon of hope not the divisive figure we'd seen in BvS was ridiculous.

@Humperdink - They weren't pretending. The world criticized Superman for using his abilities to help others, driven on by Lex Luthor's manipulations, but when Superman refused to bend to their criticism, and saved the world by giving his life for doing what they criticized him for, they completely turned around on him. I'm pretty sure Zack Snyder's "Justice League" would have expanded on this, but any suggestion that the world had a problem with Superman was deemed "too dark", and left on the cutting room floor, giving us one of the most generic superhero team films of all time.

@SisterSunday52 - Dude, you need to let it go. It’s quite clear you are a fan of Snyder’s vision, but most people weren’t. Even if he’d remained director through Justice League it seems unlikely that there would’ve been much of a future for this iteration of the universe going forward. The general audience wasn’t a fan of his work, and that’s why WB has made all these looney decisions.

DC needs someone to steer the universe. They tried (and failed) with Snyder. Since then they’ve thrown everything at the wall to see what sticks. Until they find their Kevin Feige they’re not going to be able to pull off a shared universe. They need a producer, IMO, not a director.

@PewPewPew - The general audience (to this day) still thinks that the message of "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman" was "don't be a hero". It's not.

"Wonder Woman" was the purest representation of Snyder's vision (the human nature of the darkness that plagues mankind and their potential to overcome it with the hero being the prime example of that) and it was the most well received DC Film.

All Warner Bros. had to do was look over Snyder's five film series, and work with him in presenting it to where it was easily accessible to mass audiences. Instead, they did everything except that, and we say what that got them.
