Hi there. This is my first article and i live in a non-english country, so please dont bash my grammar. Thank you.

As a CBM fan, i loved Man of Steel and its one of the good movies i've seen in 2013, but when i checked reviews, most critics said that it'd be better this movie be closer to Reeve homage, while some said its destruction of metropolis and the way Zod and his gang destroyed a part of the city. In my opinion, some of their thoughts were true. However, the movie's origin in Krypton planet, the costume, and back stories were all great. I think MoS could have been even better movie despite these mixed thoughts, here are some issues that would make it better:

  • A New Villain, not same old ones.
With this iconic character has about 6 live-action movies, there are two villains who appeared: Lex and Zod. I mean, why these two ? I love both of them, but its time for using a new villain that has yet to appear in big screen. In the movie, Micheal Shannon's role as General Zod was great, i loved the way he played, same with Faora. However, for the first movie of Superman, Zod with Faora, Jax-Ur and others were too much big and powerful as they fought against Kal-El, only one god-powered character. It'd be good if they were the villains of the first Justice League movie.

To the point about new villain, i guess there was one villain that could have battled Kal-El in his origin story, other none than: Parasite. I mean, Parasite isn't that famous villain and he'd be good to fight Superman for only one movie, and instead of Zod and dudes, Parasite would have gone to Earth and battled Superman, similar to how Iron Man brought Iron Monger for first movie instead of his famous arch enemy, the Mandarin. Because others, Metallo makes sense to appear in Batman/Superman for featuring Kryptonite, Brainiac is strong and he's good for JLA 2, and Doomsday would be good to be in third movie of MoS trilogy, where it features Death of Superman arc. It's shame that Snyder didnt choose Parasite.
  • A fight in a different place, rather than blowing most of Metropolis
One of the most issues of the movie was about that final act of the movie took place in the city, destroying nearly half of the city. For the first movie of a shared universe, it was too much damage to Metroplis was too big in DCCU, i mean, imagine in second movie where Lex and Metallo suits destroy a half of world and imagine Darkseid coming. At-least, if this fight would take place in desert or forest, it'd be better, with Parasite even bettter. I also know Zack wanted to add a different version of Kal-el, that he's real and he mentioned before he wanted to see the movie version of this character. He also said that he wanted to show everyone that Superman isnt all of Reeve and it'd be not funny nor fun, but that's too big for first movie of DCCU. Please make it smaller the 2nd movie, but a better quality movie so these critics wont crush another Zack's picture once again.
  • Less Dark
If MoS would have been a little lighter, showing things like Superman saving somebody from a crash or doing a scene like Plane crash, it'd be better. Despite MoS showed the good origins and great relationship between Jonathan, Martha and Clark, the movie was too dark. I mean, i loved the dark version of Superman, but not too dark and some lighter scenes would make the movie better quality.

  • a friendship and a bit flirty between for Clark and Lois, and later make them together.
One of the most important relationships of DC universe is between Kal-El and Lois Lane, and for a movie like MoS that spent 2 hours about telling the origins and the fact that Kryptonites are real aliens, forced these two lovely birds and even made them kiss each other. I mean, it was only a few days they met and they already kissed and got closer so much. I should admit Donner movies were better handling the relationship than Snyders. If this movie is about Superman Origins, then it has to be about himself mostly and have a balance in each supporting characters development. I dont want a forced Justice League, not even forced full of characters, i want Quality in character development.
  • A post-credit scene that would make it link into next chapter
I dont want to bring Marvel here a lot, but one of the best things that they did was introducing Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man, that small scene not only teased Avengers, but that movie was just the beginning of a bigger universe. Why didnt Snyder add a scene to this movie, and at-least feature Bruce Wayne cameo ?  In my opinion, with great easter eggs that MoS had, including Lexcorp, Wayne enterprises, and a nod-cameo to Darkseid and Tony Gallo, a post-credit scene would be great to feature a cameo from one of the DC's characters.

So, i listed that if MoS would do these things, MoS would be even better. What are your opinions here ? Share with us, thanks a lot for reading.

Using Zod was utterly fine, it was merely how he was written. Non of your points, in my opinion, are that great.

Man of Steel could of been better if there was more classic Clark Kent/Superman in it, but it was clearly influenced a lot by Superman: Earth One and given that that story was very different from the traditional incarnation of the character the faults are understandable to an extent...

Anyway, the film did a solid job for what it was, could've been better, but it was most definitely a better reboot than The Amazing Spider-Man, I imagine in the sequel we'll get a more traditional incarnation of the character cos let's face it; Man of Steel? It was his first day on the job, things can only go up from there.

@Donut

I think the idea/story of having an invasion being the first threat Superman faces was a good move.

By the way, complaints about the destruction, killing, etc. are really not what was wrong with the film.

I don't think any of your points really help the movie. The villain was fine. having a dark color scheme doesn't make the movies tone necessarily darker. The movie wasn't campy bright colored Superman, so what? The destruction, I believe, was just a plot device that would carry over in to BvS. That gives a reason for Batman and Lex to come out as enemies of Superman. Everyone believes that the main premise of BvS will be:

Lex Luthor rebuilds Metropolis after the invasion with the help of Bruce Wayne. Lex is seen as a hero while him and others try to make him seem like a villain. Bruce helps Lex so that he can have a better reason for being in Metropolis more so that he can watch Superman.

Without the destruction of Metropolis then this type of story wouldn't be as easy to do. Same with the killing of Zod. Also why wouldn't he fight Zod in Metropolis. If the movie hadn't been more realistic and made it so that the city was barely damaged in an ALIEN INVASION, people wold complain that there wasn't enough damage. Another thing people have to remember is that he was not yet Superman. This was his first day on the job, he had to make the tough decision of saving his thought to be dead race or to save the race that raised him, he had to protect people in the process of attacking people, Henry Cavill wasn't even credited as playing Superman in the film (he was credited as Clark Kent/Kal-El) which means he probably wasn't in the script, and the word Superman was never said in this film. This is nothing but an origin story. Some movies tell the origin then move on ot the villain and main plot. The entire main plot of this movie was the origin. He still isn't Superman yet.

The Clark & Lois thing doesn't matter to me. It's a different take on the character. I think it was awesome to see Lois hunting down Clark. She seemed more like the reporter side of her from the comics then she ever has in a live-action format. Amy Adams did great and I bet that flirtatiousness will carry over in to MOS. The whole world like saw a photo or video of the alien kissing Lois. People would start getting a little suspicious if she moved from the alien to Clark so fast. Also Lois dating the new guy at the Daily Planet would seem odd.

Also movies don't need Post Credit Scenes. No move needs them. Kevin Fiege has said on video that the Marvel films don't need them and that there's no guarantee we'll get them in any Marvel film. He's said those are just fun little bits that they begin to think of as they shoot the film. If MOS had nothing to tease then don't tease anything. They didn't no where they were going to go exactly so making a PCS would be stupid of them. Because if someone came up with a new idea that contradicted the PSC then they'd have to scrape it no matter how good the idea was.

Lol at people calling this film realistic... that opens up an issue that would take 2 paragraphs to explain how much more shitty it makes the film.

Zod, in my opinion, was an alright character, but as the villain? He was a loser of one (not because he failed in the end. That's 101 on all CBM - the villains fails in the end) and failed to be a functional one. And no, him killing about 5,000 did not make him functional as a villain at all.

A new villain doesn't make a film better. It had the potential to be, but that doesn't mean it is. The Dark Knight was better than Batman '89 and they both had Joker. We could have endless movies with Batman fighting only Joker, and the films can still be good. A new villain would not guarenas it to be better. It would have the same chances of being as good or as bad as MOS was. And it's almost been a year since this came out. We're still making these articles! Who cares. No matter how much you write about it MOS has happened. You can't change it. So hope that BvS is better vs wining that MOS wasn't good enough for you.

Also the post credits scene wouldn't be needed at all. WB was waitingn to see how MOS did before setting up there universe and they've said they don't have plans past BvS. In a recent interview Zack mentioned how Batman became a character in this movie and said that they sat down and talked about it after MOS already came out. They didn't have anything to tease!

And finally if MOS was too big for a first movie then they wouldn't have made it like they did. There's so much bigger they can do. With Batman, Lex Luthor, and Wonder Woman all on one film alongside Superman, it's hard to not be bigger than MOS. The funny thing is all of the flaws in the movie weren't even addressed in this article. The real flaws were character development, non stop action, and a script that could've been better.

That was probably the closest we actually got to comic Superman. I'd always rather attach the label of "good men" to guys like Superman and Cap.

But yeah, that was a very small glimmer of the badass comic Superman.

@Mak

True.

Thats why I can see Bats going up against Supes and he won't do any harm to him......just like the comics. I loved MOS with all the flaws.

My main hate was 'Where did the Suit come from' I read the prequel comic but...maybe the ship created it like Jor-El created the command key.

Thats my theory.

In BvS we will get the Boy Scout that we all love.

I agree mostly with where you're coming from, as I do like the concept behind Man of Steel/Earth One but it's clear the concept was better than the execution in both cases. As for Goyer's involvement, like a lot of people I too think he's a better 'idea man' than 'story/script man' but I can actually just about look past the script faults, it's just personally cos I'm such a fan of Mark Waid's Birthright origin that I wanted that to be bigger influence here as personally, that is the perfect (though admittedly more optimistic) route to introduce Superman to a modern audience.
Klone
Klone - 4/20/2014, 5:08 PM
Ideas man implies Goyer has a lot of original ideas as far of DC is concerned or using elements of the comics with his own spin. I'd say story man is more appropriate. BB was largely taken from an old Batman TAS episode and TDK and MoS plots were largely taken from preexisting comics and old TAS episodes too. Even the artificial Kryptonians is something from Bryne's run. Not that is anything wrong with taking all those elements from the comics, but I'd say story man is a more apt term.

BatzFTWfan @ Great article thumbs up! :)

Good read man, and great points.

I do think closer to Reeve's homage would make it a better Superman film and bring back more of the Superman magic...

Superman's suppose to be light not dark, that's for Batman anyway if they cut out the bit where Lois finds out Clark's Superman before the world does, I'd put it in my top 20 of best cbm's, but damn they kept it in. :P

So glad the studio did'nt adapt the points you stated in this article because the film would have been worse.

Hiring a better writer would have been better and leaving out the shakey cam would have been much better.

I like the less dark and slower flirtations, but I disagree with every other part. Having the fight in the city is the only logical place for it to take place. Why would Zod punch Kal into space? Or into a forest with nobody there? I thought Goyer really created a new kind of Zod, and when Superman destroyed the world engine and the genesis chamber, he essentially killed Zod before snapping his neck. Zod wanted the fight in the city, Superman tried throughout every punch, every flying duel, and every conflict to get the fight away from civilians. It's really getting stupid that this is still an issue for people. I get the part that it was glossed over pretty quickly afterwards, there should've been some sort of memorial, but of course, hindsight is 20/20, and Zack and David have said that he's dealing with the consequences in the next one.

*Thinking to myself "Be nice, be nice, be nice, be nice, be nice."*

Ok, so, trying to be nice, I'll just say no. No to everything you wrote pretty much. Especially using Parasite, that's just ......*"be nice"*, ummmm.......wrong. Just wrong. That's as nice as I can be about it.
