MAN OF STEEL Opens #2 At Japanese Box Office

MAN OF STEEL couldn't top Oscar-winning Miyazaki’s THE WIND RISES at this weekend's box office in Japan.

Japanese movies will almost always out-do American movies at their box office, and MAN OF STEEL couldn't put a stop to that. Miyazaki's THE WIND RISES held the number one spot, and has done so for five weeks now.

MAN OF STEEL brought in $2.7 million, which wasn't quite the hit they were looking for as IRON MAN 3 brought in over $4 million at the Japanese box office upon its release. Although Marvel had the advantage of not going up against a Miyazaki film shortly after he announced his retirement.

There are plenty of factors to take into consideration however a $2.7 million is fine for MAN OF STEEL, especially considering PACIFIC RIM only opened with $3 million when its fate was more heavily rested on the worldwide box office.

Nevertheless the Japanese have helped MAN OF STEEL achieve a worldwide gross of $660 million, which may not have been as high as they originally expected (considering the $225 million budget) however it hasn't changed any plans regarding the sequel.

The Batman/Superman movie is set for a July 17, 2015 release and stars Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.

MOS is a pretty cool CBM,too bad they didnt favor it over sone film about "farts".

The Japanese didn't even like Pacific Rim which caters to them & their obsession over big ass robots & giant monsters.

They eat squid too...they simply have bad taste.

I'm a marvel guy and I was pretty disappointed with IM3 so I was excited to see MOS and I actually thought that could've been worse. The story and dialogue was atrocious in so many ways. The action was good and all but it didn't make up IMO for everything it lacked. I even saw man of steel two more times just cause I figured maybe I wasn't seeing the big picture in the flick, but after watching it three times I dislike it more and more. I figured it'd be awesome with Snyder cause I loved watchmen so idk where things went wrong. I read Nolan, goyer, and Snyder all contemplated about supermans/ zod kill, and Nolan wasn't originally down to do that but Snyder and goyer were. Lol not to call them dumb but I'd listen to Nolan any day of the week. I thought supermans returns was sick, and had they had Henry cavill in returns I bet dc would be in a better place right now.

@LTTOBTS

agreed. IM3 and MoS are NOT apples - to - apples comparisons....things like Batman Begins (Worldwide: $374,218,673) or Amazing Spider-man (Worldwide: $752,216,557) are. ....e.g. reboots of a character coming off of a critically or financially disappointing previous film. and Spidey 3 was vilified but still made a huge amount of money (Worldwide: $890,871,626) showing that the character's film brand remained incredibly viable.

@LTTOBTS-Couldn't agree more. IM3 and Avengers were 2 of the top 5 grossing movies of all time box office wise. Comparing any movie to those is setting it up for failure. Not to mention the following those movies had built by the time they were released. At the end of the day this grossed 660 million as a reboot and the first of most likely a trilogy. Those numbers are crazy.
