Mission: Impossible franchise director Christopher McQuarrie has been a fan-favourite choice to helm a Superman movie for years, and the filmmaker recently shared a very funny response when asked about it.

The DCEU DCU is in a state of flux, with the hope being that next month will see DC Studios' plans for the franchise made clear. Following Henry Cavill's return as Superman in Black Adam, we started hearing rumblings that he might reunite with Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie for Man of Steel 2.

Since then, Cavill has been informed his services are no longer required, while James Gunn is busy penning a reboot that will revolve around a younger version of the hero.

There's still a chance McQuarrie could direct, for course, as Gunn has revealed he doesn't intend to helm the project. Recently, a fan reached out to the filmmaker to put him forward for the gig, prompting McQuarrie to hit back with a very clever response.

Pom Klementieff for Lois Lane, anyone?

As great as it would be to see McQuarrie enter the DCU, there's a chance he'll be too busy as the director remains hard at work on the two-part Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning. Rumours continue to persist that he may work with DC Studios at some point, though Ben Affleck and James Mangold may be among the top contenders to helm this new take on Superman.

With it unclear how far into the writing process Gunn actually is, chances are this reboot isn't heading our way anytime soon. The Man of Tomorrow is almost certainly a priority for the newly launched studio, though, and as the character has already been shelved for half a decade...well, a few more years won't hurt.

As for McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is scheduled for release on July 14, 2023, while the sequel, Dead Reckoning Part Two, is to be released on June 28, 2024.

Who do you guys think should helm the next Superman movie?

Roland Emmerich would be an awesome choice if they had a godtier script. He knows how to go hard or go home, it's just he hires the village idiot to write a script every time! Except Independence Day, sorta lol

@bobevanz -

I’m genuinely curious what has made you think he’d be a good fit based on his latest flicks, I see nothing that indicates that he gets Supes or superhero’s for that matter 🤔

@bobevanz - Imagine thinking Roland Emmerich would be a good pick for Superman. What a disaster. Allow me to suggest Robert Zemeckis.

Really. How do you come to the conclusion of Pom for Lois Lane. He was obviously drawing references to Gunn finishing the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and McQuarrie finishing the Mission Impossible franchise by utilising a shared actress in both franchises before moving on to something else. Talk about making something up from nothing but this is what passes for a journalist of any type these days

He would be a perfect choice.
WB missed on a great opportunity when they said no to him years ago

@Usernametaken - yeah I don’t even know why they refused him after his success with MI. I mean it’s possible that his proposal wasn’t to their liking, but this is WB; where bad decisions and aimless directions are applauded by the executives.

Words cannot describe how much i wanted this f*cking guy directing a SuperCavill movie.
He's been in the CBM business since X-Men, worked on The Wolverine, he clearly wants to make a Superman movie.

Give him a Superman movie or a Green Lantern one, X-Men? Wolverine? Give him SOMETHING FUUCK!

Really wished Henry Cavill could still play Superman

Spielberg. Pipe dream, I know.

@RolandD -

Spielberg would nail the 40s classic charm of Superman for sure…in fact…why not Joe Johnston?

@HulkisHoly - I loved The Rocketeer, but Johnson flubbed The Wolfman, and Captain America was saved by its performances but felt very cheap to me.

@RolandD - I have a belief he could be. They want to get this started off right (giving people faith in the brand again) and I think that means getting a big director with a good track record who also would fit the style of storytelling they need. Spielberg fits that like a glove. Even if he doesn't, I damn sure think he was asked at least.

I think cap 1 only felt cheap with some of the green screen set pieces and cgi for the city but otherwise it was directed competently. I think he’d do a good job, just make sure the studio budgets for more real set pieces and backgrounds like The Batman did.

Spielberg still has a great track record. Another director who I think could nail it if he has the right special effects team is Robert Zemeckis. He’s had only one or two misfires but I think Superman is up his alley. The guy did Forest Gump for crying out loud.

@HulkisHoly - Great idea! That would work as well. The Russos would also be great but I think they are locked in with the MCU even if they don’t currently have a contract. Steve Rogers in the MCU is the perfect template for how Kal/Clark can stand up for his morals without being corny and do what is right whether it or the popular choice or not.

@HulkisHoly - Keep those ideas coming. Maybe Gunn is listening.😂

@HulkisHoly - I wanted Zemekis for the Flash but yeah he would make a great Superman. Another good get would be Brad Bird. Wanted him for F4 but since they got a director already I think he would be a good one to go for. Now I don't know if he would be a good fit for Superman, but I would love to see what Peter Jackson could do with a superhero film.

Peter Jackson is a great idea. I would love to see a 40s inspired Superman and he did really well with Kong in that time period.

Just as long as he doesn’t film it like he did the hobbit trilogy 🤮

Russos did cap well enough that I think they could do a good Superman movie too. I just don’t know if they would get the patriotism and optimism down.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 12/28/2022, 2:10 PM
@HulkisHoly - the russos arguably made the best live action superman in the past 20 or so years so i think they could nail the optimism and patriotism.

Sam Raimi would be so perfect for Superman.
I think he actually wants to do Batman, right now, but he would make such a good Superman movie. You want that classic Superman feel? Raimi all the way.

mcquarrie felt like the best choice. oh well. let's see how gunn will do

@tmp3 - Knowing how passionate you are about this, that is a really measured and emotionally evolved response. We could all learn a thing or two from you.

@ObserverIO - i wanted mcquarrie but i never thought cavill was great in the role personally; main reason i had any interest in him being back was the promise of a mcq superman (which would automatically jump to my most anticipated superhero film). with gunn i get a clean slate which i like, i just feel that gunn is completely the wrong choice for superman. and i say this as someone who really liked peacemaker.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/27/2022, 7:51 AM
@tmp3 - There's still hope (for McQuarrie at least, not for Cavill). I personally think he'd do a fine job.

And a McQuarrie/Tom Cruise Green Lantern would be a dream, but I don't see either of them slumming it on a streaming service with a TV series.
tmp3
tmp3 - 12/27/2022, 9:21 AM
@ObserverIO - a john stewart low-budget berlanti show sounds like the polar opposite of what i'd want for that saga. mcquarrie/cruise gl film sounds too good to be true though.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 12/27/2022, 10:46 AM
@tmp3 - Looking at the Guardians films, I believe he has the ability to capture the heart and soul of Superman properly. My issue is with his style of humour. It fits the Guardians, but not Superman and I hope he realizes that.

Still can't get over the old regime rejecting a Man of Steel sequel script that sit up a Green Lantern film literally killing two birds with one stone.
