In a recent interview, writer Mark Millar (Wanted, The Ultimates, Superman: Red Son) mentioned that he had been approached about revamping the Superman franchise. The revamp would be a trilogy, with all three films shot consecutively.

Millar said:

"A director approached me about three months ago and he said, 'Look, The Man Of Steel [the planned Bryan Singer sequel] might not be happening. If that doesn’t happen, it has been spoken about the possibility of me coming in, would you like to write it?’ And I was like, 'Yeah.'"

Millar went on to say:

“I’ve had this plan for like 10 years for a big three-picture Superman thing, like a big Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. And hopefully release them one year after another…if it works out, we’ll have to start shooting next summer.”

This film was more of an homage to the original film than anything else, which is why it didn't do too well. I appreciate Routh's attempt to portray the Clark-ish mannerisms that Reeves perfected, but his performance was under-whelming overall.

We need a new, tough-@$$ Supes and a villain that poses a physical threat!

The Singer/Routh movie was a mess. Routh was not a good actor, the script made little sense, and Superman's kid ruined that line of the franchise for good, just as Zorro's movie kid trivialized that myth. Christopher Reeve was a great Superman, but even those movies were a mess as soon as the cartoonish (I know, I know) bad guys were introduced. It's a new day: all superhero films have to take into account Dark Knight, Iron Man and Spider Man. Myths change with the times, either to reflect the time or to inform and teach it. The Superman myth is no different. Singer and Routh came close to killing Superman for the movies. I hope Millar's idea is great and he finds the right director, producer, and actors to bring it to life.
