To say that Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría is excited to play Angela Spica aka The Engineer in James Gunn's Superman: Legacy would be quite the understatement.

According to her Instagram, it's hard to say who's more excited about the fact that María Gabriela de Faría (Yo soy Franky, The Moodys) will be portraying Angela Spica aka The Engineer in Superman: Legacy.

The Venezuelan actress shared a lovely post on Instagram that revealed how she celebrated landing the role with her representatives and family. Click the arrows on the right side to view each moment described in the post. The timestamp on one of the photos also reveals that she found out about landing the role back in October, well before the news leaked.

De Faría will be playing The Engineer in the film, a character that's reportedly going to serve as the project's villain (or one of its villains). That's interesting as the character is a member of The Authority, a collection of anti-heroes who complete their missions by any means necessary.

Originally debuting in The Authority Vol. 1 #1 in 1999, The Engineer was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch and interestingly enough, no other members of The Authority have been cast...yet.

In July, Gunn went to Threads to suggest that the rumors concerning The Authority's appearance were untrue. "I never said The Authority would be present," were Gunn's exact words.

Does this mean that only The Engineer will appear in the film and not the rest of the Authority's members?

Faría is joining the James Gunn-directed (and written) film which already includes David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Will the other heroes also appear in adversarial roles? Are they appearing in the film to stop Superman from doing something that goes against federal government instruction?

The film is rumored to have a plot that centers around a conflict in the Middle East. Perhaps Superman sets out to intervene against the government's wishes, which prompts the President or the Department of Defense to send out a group of heroes to stop Superman?

Hopefully, as more casting announcements are made in the coming weeks, we'll begin to develop a clearer indication of the movie's overarching plot.

Currently set for release on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy is the first film in Gunn's reboot the DCEU.  Filming is expected to begin this January.

Wow. The "Engineer."
I mean, out of all of Supe's well-known rogues, that HAS to be it! Who cares about Parasite, Metallo, Mxyzptlk, Bizzaro, Electra, Ultraman, Brainiac, Mongual, Darkseid, Zod or even 'done-to-death' Lex who are ALL well-established Rogues. Let's be edgy and have "The Engineer."

Just

@lazlodaytona - The more I hear about this movie, the more my spirit leaves me.

The only good thing Gunn so far has done was the casting of Superman and Lois. Everything else has been "hmmp".

@TheLight - I mean, it has nothing to do with u personally, but I truly hope to God you are wrong about your spirit leaving u.
Simply because, since I watched Superman II, my first Superhero film when I was 7, and since the Superboy TV series from '88-'92, I've been so uninspired with the Superman character in film and television (ok, that's a fib. I love the current version of Superman & Lois and Bruce Timm's JL/JLU of Superman, even though he can be a pr1ck often, is great too).
My brother and I waited in line for 3 hrs when Superman Returns came out in 2006. I have much more appreciation for it now, but back then it was almost like epic Star War's fans response to "The Phantom Menace."
That can't happen again.

@lazlodaytona - I appreciate that bud. I'm trying to stay hopeful about this movie, but every time I hear more about it, it irks me.

This looks like a disaster. I think he would have been much better off with a simple Superman story to draw the fans back in. A known villain with Lex in the background. We've never really seen President Lex in the movies so a lot to explore there.

@AvalonX - judgement reserved until I see of course, but from what I’m hearing it doesn’t sound all that great.

@Arthorious - There is such as thing as being overly clever. If it was my ass launching a new universe, I'm not saying I would play it safe but you have the people who are mad Caville never really got a fair shake. Blue Beetle was a bomb and Aquaman 2 isnt going to do it either. I know those two are sort of before him but the studio got crushed on the Flash. They hired Gunn to fix it, not get all lets be different here.

Nothing says "Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN way" like a plot that resolves around the middle east :/ .... ugh

@lazlodaytona - Gunn would be crazy to do that in the current political climmate.

I'm just here to say I laughed and love the pic of her dressing up toothless in a supes costume. That made me instantly like her and hope she does good in the role.

The movie itself I'm worried about but hope I'm wrong

Okay the Superman & Lois castings are great.

Okay, so we get the Suicide Squad B-team, several other random heroes, & a middle east conflict(UGH!) thrown in.

Will there be room to shoehorn Superman into his own film?

It might. It's just hard to tell.

I just can't understand why they want to cram in so many B list characters, and for God's sake, inject middle east conflict into it.

Oh that’s cool , congrats on her getting the role!!.

Also isn’t The Engineer the leader of the team in the comics?…

I hope that remains the same in the films aswell because it would be cool of Gunn & Safran to give Maria that responsibility.

TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 11/18/2023, 5:21 PM
I wonder if they’ll borrow some ideas from this run?

I know it’s very recent but still…

I think one of the things it focuses on is Superman’s Idealism and how it clashes with The Authority’s cynicism…

In the original synopsis , it says that Superman is guided by human kindness in a world that feels kindness is old fashioned so I feel that theme will play a big part in the film.

Gunn will show in the film how some in real life view him as outdated but ultimately prove that he is not and is still as relevant as ever (hopefully in a well done manner).

@TheLight - think it doesn't actually sound that bad. Just don't see a more cynical team like the Authority work for the government
TheLight
TheLight - 11/18/2023, 6:59 PM
@bkmeijer1 - The part about him going to the Middle East solo to fix a conflict is pretty solid, but everything else sounds like some soft "Black Adam" nonsense. To get the message clear, sending in human soldiers to deal with him gives better conflict and better resolve for Big Blue to boarder a peace between both people without powers. Yeah, this could still be done in Legacy, but the human conflict will always be the driving force to why Superman wants humanity to be better.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/18/2023, 7:09 PM
@TheLight - you're right, it does sound like Black Adam. A human task force actually would be more interesting indeed. You just provided the piece I was missing for it to make sense

"I never said The Authority would be present"

But Gunn doesn't really say they wouldn't be present either, so I suppose they could still be in it.

And I wouldn't mind it if Legacy is like Superman vs The Elite, but with the Authority instead. I never really liked the Elite as a team anyway.

AvalonX
AvalonX - 11/18/2023, 11:34 PM
I honestly don't know where Gunn's head is at if these rumors are true. Sounds like an early draft of Black Adam. The MOS already divided the fans on a less traditional take. BvS had the most depressed Superman I've ever seen. Sometimes, simple and traditional is the way to go, especially when this is his big movie and likely the pillar of the new DCU. If it bombs, hes hosed and so is the DCU.

She seems happy, it'll be a great and unforgettable experience to her.

Expecting more Authority members to be cast with that said.
