X-MEN Director Matthew Vaughn Doesn't Want Taron Egerton To Play Wolverine; Says He'd Be A Better Lex Luthor

X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn isn't a fan of Taron Egerton playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Wolverine. Instead, he believed the Kingsman star would be a better fit for Lex Luthor...

Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was in the midst of putting together his Superman: Legacy cast. David Corenswet ended up being chosen as the new Man of Steel, but Nicholas Hoult's name was also batted around and we've since heard he's in the running to play Lex Luthor.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Jesse Eisenberg was the last actor to take on the role in theaters, though his drastic reinvention of the villain into an awkward Mark Zuckerberg-style baddie didn't sit well with a lot of DC Comics fans.

During a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused, X-Men: First Class and possible future helmer of The Authority, Matthew Vaughn, was asked for his thoughts on fans wanting Taron Egerton to play Wolverine. The filmmaker discovered Egerton when he cast the Welsh actor in Kingsman but believes there's another role he'd be well-suited for.

"He’d be better as Lex Luthor. He’d be an amazing Luthor," Vaughn said. "He shouldn’t be Wolverine. I don’t think he’s right for it. You got to really go back to the comic. Hugh is brilliant as Wolverine, but I’d go back to the what the comics are...[he’s a] small, grizzly, tough guy. Hugh has made it so iconic that if you go into that version...no."

"Taron would make an amazing, intelligent villain," he concluded.

This would be an interesting role for Egerton and we'd love to see his take on the character. Outside of Kingman, he's proven himself an incredibly diverse performer thanks to his roles in the likes of Rocketman and Black Bird; with that in mind, we're sure he'd do Superman's greatest foe justice.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Skyler Gisondo is rumoured to be playing Jimmy Olsen and we recently learned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Kurt Russell may be in the running for Jor-El.

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

I can't really see him as either. It's the same with Daniel Radcliffe as Wolverine, I'd just see him. And when I keep thinking "hey, it's that actor", the illusion is broken.

@VictorAlonzo - What up bro! The attitude is there, but he's not commanding enough, or seems that have that leadership quality and Scott is TALL. In fact if Army Hammer was a great actor he'd be the perfect actor...But...sigh...

Now as Havoc.....YES, I can see it.

@Blastaar - I saw the height and instantly felt similar. I want that size differnce to play a role in Scott and Logans relationship. I believe Scott should also possess the noticable ability to keep cool under pressure, while Logan tends to lash out.

@VictorAlonzo - You got it bro!!!! EXACLTY! Slim(Scott) and Wolverine(Shorty).

No more whiny Scott Summers and over exposed Wolverine. That's what I'd like to see too, a lot of banter but Scott showing Wolverine's that he's way too hot headed, showing why Scott is the perfect leader.

Michael Rosenbaum IS Lex Luthor. Bring him back. He was the voice of the Flash in Justice League. Why does DC never do live-action castings that make sense?

@HammerLegFoot - Bilyl Zane was always my top choice, and really seemed akin to the animated series' Lex. won't happen though. plus he doesn't have "That" look anymore. Don't really think i can see Taron in it either. Hoult would be a better pick i'd think.

@VictorAlonzo - Wolverine as Danny Devito has been a joke since the 90s at least. We used to fancast him back then too LMAO. It never seems to not be funny.
mountainman

@dragon316 - They really should pick a lesser known actor vs an established name for the role.

@WarMonkey - I'd like to see him go for it in a

"What The--?!" Movie

Let them go balls to the wall in a four chapter story.

3 individual solo tales, and the final chapter being a team up at the end.

They can finally get every morsel of silly 💩 out of their system, and get back to action dramas.

*Bonus points if they parody Matt Parker & Trey Stone as villains in the end!

It felt like Jesse Eisenberg's Lex was 2 characters.
The pieces where he was playing the straight psycho I thought were great, but then he seemed to jump off playing Lex like it was inspired by Jim Carrey's Riddler!!

I few years back, I would have fancasted Michael Fassbender as Luthor.

Today, I'm not sure what actor would better be suited to play him, but in my opinion, he's gotta be both intimidating and charming simultaneously. You need someone who is perceived as physically powerful, so the contrast between him and Superman is not based on the physique, but rather, you would see how Luthor is a peak level human that knows very well his greatest asset is his mind, because on a power level, he will always fall too short. Luthor will work greater as a character the more you present him as a menace because of his ability to be favored by the public, because that's something Superman will never be able to punch, and makes him so distinct from other villains.

Actually, I would argue that the BEST character direction for Luthor would ideally lead to a portion of the internet stating "Luthor did nothing wrong". That's when you know Luthor was a convincing menace.
