SUPERMAN LIVES: Jim Carrey & Gary Oldman Were Considered For Brainiac

Concept artist Rolf Mohr ("Halo") shared some info on his blog regarding the time that he spent working on Superman Lives. He revealed that Jim Carrey ("The Mask") and Gary Oldman ("Batman Begins") were considered for the main villain role, Brainiac.

Last year, I posted Superman Lives concept art that was illustrated by Rolf Mohr. What I didn't realize until now is that the artist saw my article and shared a link to it on his blog along with more information regarding that infamous project. When Superman Lives went into pre-production Rolf was working for Hasbro's "Special Projects" division, not Warner Bros.. Rolf explains, "They (Hasbro) would collaborate with the studios developing art, story ideas, building maquettes etc. as speculative bids to try and land the merchandising rights."

Rolf on Superman Lives:
For Superman Lives I was working mostly in the dark based on vague descriptions without  seeing a script. At the time it all sounded rather crazy and confusing, with Brainiac's Skull Ship that could absorb anything it came across, Brainiac himself inside some sort of alien shape-shifting 'hybrid technology' which would open up and engulf people and grow ever larger, more limbs, etc, then Superman also had alien tech in the form of the Eradicator, which could become a suit as well as transform into an 'Interceptor' ship...  A giant biomechanical alien spider thing which had a body that could open up and smaller ones came out, etc, etc...

At the time I had no idea who had written it or that Tim Burton was on board to direct, but they told me Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman were being considered for Brainiac. It was interesting to read the script years later and see that Kevin Smith had actually done a pretty impressive job by introducing the Eradicator as a transforming suit in order to weave together all the requirements the producer wanted: "No Superman suit, no flying... and a giant spider in the 3rd act." He even managed to include 2 polar bears. - Rolf Mohr

Uh-oh, filmmaker Jon Schnepp might have to update his Kickstarter-funded documentary, "The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?" as I don't believe anyone has ever reported Jim Carrey ("Cable Guy") or Gary Oldman ("True Romance") as being in the mix for Brainiac. The only real actor that I've seen attached to the part has been Tim Allen ("Galaxy Quest"). The rest of the cast would've been Nic Cage as Superman, Courtney Cox as Lois Lane, Chris Rock as Jimmy Olsen and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor.

Check out the trailer for "The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?" which features some concept art for Brainiac. He would've been a big head with spider legs. Isn't that neat? No, no it's not.

Every time I hear about what Superman Lives could have been, I become slightly more optimistic about life in general, in that we as an audience and as film fans, didn't have to be subjected to such an atrocious idea, or group of ideas, rather.

What if a MOS hater made a gif of a movie that represented an alternate reality where which Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan made a Superman movie with Nicolas Cage?

Good thing this movie was never made. I can't sanction Carrey's buffoonery.

The MCU and DCU would never have happened if this movie was made, it would have ruined the whole genre forever. There is no recovering from a movie that sounds this bad. (and yes, I saw B&R)

I wonder if Jim Carrey's "I'm a serious actor." phase has anything to do with Two-Face's comment

@nailbiter111
I've seen the script online, I only skimmed through it though. Deadshot was in it. Luthor created the Chia Pet.

Now I want Nic Cage's Supes and Rock's Olsen to discuss jelly versus syrup to accompany a tossed salad.

The Boy is set down lightly on the roof. He opens his eyes, which

then go wide. Before him stands SUPERMAN (um... 90's style),

licking his hand.

SUPERMAN

Mmmm -- Spaghetti.

(hand on the boy)

You okay?

BOY

Can we do that again?!

SUPERMAN

First I gotta beat up the bad guys.

BOY

My mom thinks you're cute.

SUPERMAN

That's why I voted for her.

Superman winks and leaps into the air, disappearing.

Tim Burton worked for Batman because Batman is a dark lonely character, in a dark violent city, who has dark twisted supervillains. For this reason, even though he took quite a few liberties with the source material, his vision still aligned with it somewhat. Superman is a totally different property and Burton's zany non-comicbook-adhering-to vision for Superman would have ended up a hot mess on film.

Nick Cage as Superman: Cinematic Tragedy

Jim Carey as Brainiac: Cinematic Tragedy

Gary Oldman as Brainiac: F*cking Awesome

Kevin Spacey as Luthor: F*cking Awesome (Singer and his co-writers made Superman Returns the disappointing borefest it was, not the cast)

Courtney Cox as Lois Lane: Perfect

Chris Rock as Jimmy Olsen: Huh???????

SN: Bruh, did this guy say no Superman suit or a flying and they had a giant spider and 2 polar bears?

This makes me appreciate the CBMs we have out now, no matter how bad they are, because none of them could be as abysmal as this.

The producer was shitting all over Superman.

It's good to remember "Superman Lives" as an example of how relatively recently it was that your average Hollywood producer wouldn't think twice of substituting his random whims for the source material. Comics had that little respect when it came time to adapt them.

Gary Oldman would be an interesting Brainiac.
