Superman: Source Code & Moon Director Duncan Jones on Turning Down Man of Steel

Duncan Jones, director of Moon and Source Code, was approached by Christopher Nolan about directing Man of Steel. He turned the gig down and explains why.

"I was thrilled to be on that short list," explains Jones. "For me, that was enough. I don't know if I would be ready for that leap yet. I did have a meeting with Chris and he's a fantastic guy and seemed to have really enjoyed Moon, so there was some legitimate interest in me. I think, maybe, I'm not quite ready for that scale of project and that scale of expectation from an audience that is already existing and is waiting to see the next generation of Superman film. I don't know. It's a hard one. I'm a huge Superman fan and Bizarro Superman fan. And also a big Judge Dredd fan, which was another one that came my way. Those are two very different scales of projects. Superman was so big that I think I was a little intimidated by it and sort of backed out. Judge Dredd I really thought about and it ended up not being right for me because I had such strong feelings and opinions on what I wanted that film to be. Although I really like what they're going to do with it, it's not the film that I was going to make. So that one wasn't going to work out."

Always great to see a person who is aware of his own limitations. Wonder what he would have brought to Dredd though. And do his comments indicate that there may have been talk of Bizarro in the upcoming film? Let's all speculate :-D

Yes I did. That's the first thing I noticed. I wonder if he just, accidently, gave away some info about this movie? If so, I hope they do bizzarro right.

If He Is I Think They Will Handle Him Good...He Has To Fit In With The Story....And The Actor Who Plays Superman Could Even Possibly Be Bizarro Too...but im just speculating...hopefully he is though.

Well if the Same actor who plays The Man plays Bizzarro, I hope he's a good actor. I mean I don't want them too get someone who acts the same but just wears a differant suit. That would suck. I just have never seen bizzarro done right.

yea only in Superman 3 and that was barely anything...and smallville....i don't count it...but he would have to be a good actor...but he will already be stuck with the task of being clark kent and superman so bizarro would be too much.

Lets be honest, he only has one movie out now. For a big franchise like Superman they need someone who can deliver. They dont want to make the mistake Sony did with this new Spiderman.

he probably would rather direct a marvel film, maybe iron man 3.

He would have been way better than Zach "Fast-slow" Snyder.

Seems to me that after "Bryan stupid-ass Singer" failed the Superman franchise in 2006, now all other directors are scared to take on the Superman project.

Then again Singer was such a [frick]ing idiot anyway.

@Nemeres- All good... -_-

I'm worried about this film, I mean shit. I don't know if they'll even put a REAL villain in it this time.

Nolan is the master at story-telling. Snyder is the master at visuals. So with Nolan as the producer who basically SET the groundwork for this film and with Zack Snyder being the director. I just fail to see how this film could possibly fail. But i don't know...Superman films have a tendency of SUCKING. They are usually boring, never have a real villain and they tend to butcher everything. The Donner films- gave Superman powers he never had in the comics and they butchered Lex Luthor beyond belief. Superman Returns...that [frick]ing crap film goes without saying.

I'm worried to god about this reboot. I pray WB loses the rights to Supes so we can possibly get a company that can actually NAIL a half-decent Supes flick. I used to be on WB's side because the Siegel heirs just seem like a pack of selfish dogs but [frick] it I want a good Superman film and I doubt we'll ever see one with WB.

Just saying...

Nothing about this film sounds good at all really. The fact that the story is by Nolan, yeah it seems great but may also be a bad thing. Nolan isn't known for his action-sequences. I'm just worried Nolan might've made a boring story. Snyder...was HIRED BY Nolan so I doubt he has much creative control in the matter.

I don't give a SHIT if the story is "amazing" as Snyder put it. I JUST WANT TO SEE SUPERMAN THROW ONE [frick]ING PUNCH is that too much to ask for?

Damn he's the only superhero with a cbm where he never fought. That is pitiful. And it is the fault of WB. I remember reading last year that back in 2006 Bryan Singer was soooo confident about "Superman Returns" that he was able to convince Warner Bros to release the film WITHOUT pre-screening it. That's partly why the film sucked so bad. Had they pre-screened the damn thing they might've caught all the problems beforehand. It only goes to show just how evil and manipulative Bryan Singer is and just how foolish and immature WB has been with the Superman franchise. Like a kid with a toy, they just toss it around until it breaks.

WB has ZERO respect for Superman or his vast fanbase.

actually i respect the guy for taking himself seriousley....most directors would just jump at it not knowing their over their heads and ruin it.a la bryan singer

@zachman2013- I find myself agreeing with everything you've said. CHeck the other article I responded to your comment on- the one where the guy wrote about whether or not the source material is still being ignored =)

Bryan Singer- SUCKS! The bastard nearly re-DESTROYED Superman for a new generation. AND he made only sub-par X-Men films. Ditched X-Men for Superman, then after he ruined Superman he went back to X-Men...but of course X-Men went even more downhill under Ratner's direction. Singer ruined BOTH franchises because he's an asshole.

nice find!I would have, of course, went against snyder (hate watchmen) but oh well!

they should really cast Tom Welling for Superman, I mean even something as simple as this tutorial shows how awesome he'd look in the role!

@OSCURO- Agreed, I don't think anybody would wanna finally see a film where Supes fights a real villain and have it end up being him fighting a retarded, opposite version of himself. LOL
