Raphael Is The Leader In The New RISE OF THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Cartoon From Nickelodeon

Leonardo fans certainly aren't going to like this one but the opening sequence of the new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon from Nickelodeon has revealed a new position for Raphael.

It seems the art style isn't the only thing being tinkered with in Nickelodeon's new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. The debate has raged for years as to whether Raphael or Leonardo was the better fighter, but it seems the sai-wielding turtle will actually be the leader of the brothers in the new show.

Raph might even have superpowers, as the opening reveals that he can seemingly focus his chi in a very Iron Fist-like manner.

The Mirage Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios cartoon will premiere in 2018.  A precise release date is expected to be announced at SDCC.

Per the show's SDCC panel description, it has been reaffirmed that Raphael and not Leonardo is the leader this time around.  The Turtles' panel will be held on Thursday, July 19, 1:45p.m. – 2:45p.m. (Room: 6A).

The official OPEN to the brand new series “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is finally here! It’s BIG, BOLD, and turtle-y action-packed. This one will have you hitting repeat all day long!

Meh - I don't really feel much for the Turtles anymore. Was such a HUGE fan of the show when I was a kid too.

@Kman - same. Michael Bay is awful with nostalgia and franchises.

@TheUnworthyThor - No, they don’t... they want children lol

@Ha1frican - And I’m perfectly fine with that. But something tells me they really want both.

@TheUnworthyThor - I’m sure they’d like both but the realit isn’t that adults generally aren’t buying toys. The kid appeal and it’s use in marketing far outweighs our critical adult sensibilities just look at the cancellations of Avengers: EMH, Young Justice, and Spectacular Spider-Man in favor of Avengers Assemble, Teen Titans Go, and Ultimate Spider-man

This 38th version of TMNT looks interesting, but I think I'll wait for the 43rd rendition to pay attention to this franchise again

This oddly bothers me making Raph the leader. I mean they've always had Leo and Raph fighting over leadership in the comics and cartoons so it's fine to play on that concept and see how it works as Raph as the leader. But Leo will always be the leader.
On the other hand, too, it's multiverse so why not for this to exist? No reason not to.

@BritishMonkey - I was surprised it bothered me too. Kinda like Mike being the brains. Anyway. Just surprised that a kids cartoon bothered me lol.

Making Raph the leader just means they dont understand these characters. Raph is too quick tempered to lead well. and removing that temper removes what makes him a great character.

Also, I dont know why this is a trend, but the dumbing down of design for this, Thundercats Roar, Teen Titans Go, etc... it's ridiculous and dumbs down our kids. Kids can handle better animation and design, stop treating them like imbeciles.

I'll give this a chance but i'm still mad they ended the 2012 series.

The aggressive breaks the rules character is great....only if you have a more stoic serious leader to play off of. The leader should never be the loose canon of the group. Because then the aggressive rule breaker has to break character to lead. We saw this with Wolverine and Cyclops. Wolverine is great as the loner rebel because he has Cyclops to play off. Wolverine as a character really changed and went down hill as soon as he led his own school. IMO. Leo as a follower..ugh

I'm not sure if I watched the new opening to a Turtles show or if I had a minor stroke of some kind. I vaguely remember colors and movement and that was all.

What a stupid decision. This reminds me of Batfanboys pushing to make him the leader of the Justice League. It doesn't fit the character and doesn't suit the team overall.

Leonardo is a leader because he has leadership qualities that Raphael lacks. Being the biggest/strongest/best fighter doesn't automatically make you a leader.

Similarly, Superman is the leader of the Justice League because he has leadership qualities that Batman lacks.

Arbitrarily changing these dynamics just to appease some, let's call them BJWs (Batman/Raphael Justice Warriors) is a disservice to all characters.
