It's hard to believe, but 2024 marks 40 years since the story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began on the page. IDW plans to celebrate the anniversary with a new line of comic books, including a relaunch of the main series from Avengers and Thor writer Jason Aaron.

In the series, the prolific comic book writer plans to take the Heroes in a Half-Shell back to their gritty roots, bringing them back in line with the original black-and-white stories from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' first four issues will feature a revolving door of artists with Joëlle Jones (Catwoman) kicking things off in a Raphael-focused first issue. The second instalment shifts the spotlight to Michelangelo with art by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire).

Then, in issue #3, Paper Girls co-creator Cliff Chiang will put his spin on Leonardo before Donatello takes centre stage in the Chris Burnham-illustrated (Batman Incorporated) fourth chapter.

"When this new series begins, the Turtles have gone their separate ways and ended up in some surprising places," Aaron tells The Hollywood Reporter (via Toonado.com). "First up is Raphael, the one mutant inmate in a prison full of killers, as brought to gorgeously gritty life by Joëlle. Can’t wait for folks to read it, and to see where we go from here."

IDW co-publisher Mark Doyle previously said this about the company's 2024 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles offerings:

"One of the great things about being at IDW is seeing all the amazing and diverse talent working on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles over the years. We wanted to create a slate of books that reflected that talent and allow them to tell a wide range of stories that would thrill all kinds of fans. It’s an honor to be publishing TMNT comics during the iconic franchise’s 40th anniversary and we’ve gone all-out to truly celebrate Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s unforgettable creations."

The trade has also shared a first look at Aaron and Jones's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, revealing that Raphael is behind bars. Based on what we see here, he eventually makes movies to escape (or keep his fellow prisoners locked up_ but what could the hero have done to end up here?

Well, while this relaunch hits in July, we'll get a better idea of what's to come in June's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Alpha. The solicitation text for that may offer some clues as it notes that, after defeating Armaggon, "Donatello has had a hard time since he came back from the future, and he's found himself in an unexpected place."

Take a look at this preview of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 below.

@grif - Are you only familiar with the cartoon? Turtles have been like this since they started in 1984. This is the sixth volume of the turtles being like this.

@ObserverIO - and it always started out with the turtles dead or in prison?
ObserverIO

@grif - Well no, traditionally they've been concealed in the shadows like ninja, but in vol. 4 Earth was brought into the galactic empire of the Utroms and so they could walk around like normal there and in #100 of vol. 5 there was a mutagen bomb that turned a portion of NY into mutants, so the world knows of their existence now (vol. 6 is a direct continuation of vol. 5).

And of course Raph is the bad boy, so he's in prison. Vigilantism is still illegal and he's always out breaking bones with Casey or whoever.

He was the leader of the Foot Clan in Vol. 3. Wore Shredder's armor and everything.

None of them are dead though. Well, I just read #150 and I don't wanna spoil it for anyone, but Raph, Mike, Don and Leo all survive and have solo issues focusing on them for the first 4 issues of the new series.

@grif - The turtle kill a street gang in the first few pages of the first comic. The whole Yoshi/ Shredder fight started because Shredder’s brother beat the shit out of Yoshi’s gf because she turned down his advances. The Last Ronin story is based off an old storyline Eastman & Laird wrote that they didn’t get to develop. TMNT has always had dark elements.

Interesting choice. I'm not too sold on the art and it seems like an over use of photo backgrounds IMO. Will check it out to see where it goes.
