The Shredder Won't Appear In TMNT: MUTANT MAYHEM... But He Will Debut In The Sequel

Shredder won't be a part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, but director Jeff Rowe has confirmed that the Turtles' most iconic villain will be introduced if the movie does get a sequel.

Leo, Mikey, Raph and Donnie will be facing-off against a lot of bad guys in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem animated movie, but the team's most iconic and recognizable villain will not be among them.

The Shredder, aka Oroku Saki, wasn't supposed to emerge as the Turtles' main antagonist in the original comics (he was actually killed off at the end of the first issue), but the popularity of the '80s animated series led to the character being brought back, and he's been the Heroes in a Half-Shells' nemesis ever since.

While speaking to SFX Magazine (via Games Radar), Mutant Mayhem co-director Jeff Rowe said there were originally plans to debut Shredder in this movie before the idea was scrapped, but he'd be "100%" down to introduce him in a potential sequel.

"We'll Dark Knight it," he said, referring to the big Joker tease at the end of Batman Begins. "When you've grown and you've become confident as a teenager, to then go up against a foe that is three times scarier than anything you've ever seen before, that's interesting and dramatic."

Of course, the first movie has to perform well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, but early word has been very positive, and we'd say a more teen-friendly take on the TMNT has a pretty good chance of being a sure-fire hit.

Do you plan on seeing Mutant Mayhem in theaters when it releases on August 4? Let us know in the comments section.

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

@TheWalkingCuban - They weren't all bad big dumb fun movies not masterpieces but right in the silly era of the 80's cartoons just that the turtles looked monstrous though.

@Matador - yeah that’s all I can think of as must’ve messed it up. Great characterization, including accessories, Leonardo was almost superb

But doggone

For the record I left led April. A LOT. And arrow himself as Casey Jones… still no Elias Koteas, he’s just iconic in the role for life.

@TheWalkingCuban - I was impressed with how much I enjoyed watching Rocksteady & Bebop they were pretty hilarious especially when they were stuck in a metal container with a grenade going off and they were just stunned.

It's crazy that the first 6 episodes of the 80's animation they had guns shooting bullets but the parents complained as it was too violent and they swapped out there guns for lasers and dummyfied Rocksteady & Bebop turning them into clowns for the remainder of the show.

Even later they turned Leonardo's voice whiny and Michelangelo's nunchucks disappeared for grapling hook.

@Matador - grappling what?!?! Dude that’s

The laser thing got on my nerves when I was a kid, I remember thinking, X-men and Spider-Man with their lasers… Batman was the most bout it bout it of all the cartoons.

@TheWalkingCuban - not to miss your other point, not only did I like bebop and rock study, I was excited to see Tyler, perry as Baxter stockman. Had he become the flyentist that we all know and love, I would’ve bricked shits.

@Matador - yes man, 400 mills doomed the 3quel, shame that. Part two was better than the first one, but when you have a mediocre part, one, a good part two will suffer. Addams family, tomb raider, those are the two I always think of when it happens to more modern movies.

As much as I want to see another iteration of The Shredder and the Foot Clan, I can respect Seth Rogen to change up the formula a bit for its first installment. Especially after I only recently binge-watched every TMNT TV Series and got exposed to many iconic Mutants I wasn't aware of until now.

Shame…

Shredder rarely gets his moment to shine in the turtle’s movies outside of Batman vs ninja turtles, the weird robot samurai in 2014, and the original film. After that he’s either reduced to a side characte/joke like in the second film or out of the shadows or a no show like tmnt or rise of the ninja turtles…

@EZBeast - Shredder was killed off in the first issue of the comics. He wasn't a major character until the cartoon made him the big bad.
EZBeast
EZBeast - 7/11/2023, 10:21 AM
@ClintThaHamster - true but he has definitely made a name for himself and is arguably the most well known and liked antagonist of the turtles. You could say the Krang versions are the more pressing villains in the series but I’m pretty sure most would prefer shredder.

That’s assuming this dumpster fire looking film gets a sequel.

I’m not a fan of directors/producers just expecting to get a second film. Green Lantern did that and the post cred was better than the whole movie. Yet it sucked so much nobody wanted a second movie.

@slickrickdesigns -
It's partially a marketing technique. Talk about a sequel now to imply you have plans for the franchise. A lot of the audience nowadays is interested in films primarily under the context of them being important in the future and being carried on.
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 7/11/2023, 9:52 AM
@Scarilian - and that could be the downfall as well. To me it seems like they’re saying we’re going to hold back on this film to make sure we can deliver a better movie as a sequel. Which translates to this movie will not be as good as it could be.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 7/11/2023, 9:57 AM
@slickrickdesigns -
Yeah, the phrasing is a bit of an oof. I think it would have been better phrasing it along the lines of 'We had a story and theme we were exploring with this film and while we tried to find a place for Shredder in that story we feel Shredder is a character who would require a lot more focus and depth to be explored as opposed to trying to fit him into this film about the mutants desire for acceptance'

Not sure this film even gets a sequel, feels like a one-and-done.

This movie will make bank, and I trust the writers and director. If this looks bad because of the "race swap" then maybe movies just aren't for you.. also read the comic lol she looks closer to the original than Karen-April

"If you ask me, I always saw April O'Neil as white... As the co-creator of the character of April O'Neil, and as someone who has always imagined her as white, and very likely of Irish/Scottish/English ancestry"" - Pete Laird

TMNT 2012: $95.6m
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014: $493.3m
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2016: $245.6m

Brand damage means it's probably not going to do well financially.

Also, the whole idea of race-swapped April being more accurate was debunked already. It was a white female model with a hairstyle appropriate to the time who the artist based the character on. Later the design of April more reflected the wife of one of those involved with TMNT.

Knowing Seth Rogen, Shredder will be a female in the sequel and it won't be Oroku Saki but Karai instead.

Or Shredder will be "non-binary".

Also, Casey Jones will be a transgender Afro-Latino that falls in love with April.
