THE FLASH Pushed For Christian Bale To Make Cameo Appearance But The Actor Repeatedly Refused

The Flash ends with a pretty massive surprise, but it's now been revealed that there were once plans for Christian Bale to show up...until he refused that is. Be warned that spoilers for the movie follow!

In The Flash's final act, Barry Allen realises that in order to restore his timeline, he must allow his mother to be murdered. It's unclear why he never thought to travel to the moment she died to see who did the deed, though that Reverse-Flash reveal was presumably being saved for a sequel!

Regardless, on his way home, the Scarlet Speedster makes one small tweak to the timeline which allows him to clear his father's name.

As he finds out in the movie's closing moments, that's once again altered his reality, leading to Ben Affleck's Batman being replaced by George Clooney's. Original plans had called for that to be Michael Keaton's Caped Crusader, making him (and Supergirl) a permanent fixture of the DCEU.

We've heard that it was DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran who came up with the idea of enlisting Clooney, but it turns out he wasn't their first choice.

As you can see in the video below, Kevin Smith has revealed that Warner Bros. spent months asking Christian Bale to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne from The Dark Knight Trilogy. The actor repeatedly refused (he's said multiple times he wouldn't play Batman again without Christopher Nolan) and the rest is history.

Bale showing up for that final exchange with Barry would have made a much bigger splash, especially as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises are a) fresher in the minds of fans and b) beloved, unlike Batman and Robin

Based on the reception to The Flash, Bale made the right choice. After all, he was unlucky enough to play Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder, a movie widely regarded as perhaps the God of Thunder's worst solo outing.

Check out Smith's comments in full below.

A bullet dodged there. It would good they didn't put a taint on his Batman. Affleck and Keaton should have been smart enough to stay away as well.

@four20smoke - Oh if only Keaton had stayed away. If only he'd held out for Batman Beyond.

I have such polarizing mixed feeling about the Flash. I cant deny i enjoyed parts of it, but the longer it sits with me and the longer its picked apart, the more i wish it to burn in hell.

Bale was smart to say no. The Nolan Trilogy is really the only flag DC still has.

@TheVandalore - I feel the opposite at first I was seriously underwhelmed but the parts I liked seemed to be growing on me.

@DaScarletClunge - I've seen it three times now and those Supergirl/Keaton sequences are truly awesome.

But the film still deserves to burn in hell.

@ObserverIO - 🤣🤣🤣 I've only seen it once, I might catch it again before it leaves the cinema.

@DaScarletClunge - fair enough. Things hit us all diff.

Ive just been watching reviews absolutely going in on it... and they arent wrong lol they make a lot of sense about why this film is worse than my initial experience. The fan service cameos i dug, but the more i think about how desperate and last second all that was, they even had Nic Cage film stuff they never used.... like the film was an epic shit show and it shows.... and its kind of a miracle it turned out as entertaining and funny as it was, because creatively i kinda hate it from top to bottom.

@TheVandalore - usually I hear people talk about CGI taking them out of a movie and I roll my eyes but this time I legit got distracted at how bad some of the CGI was.

@DaScarletClunge - i think it might also be the screen you see it on. I saw it twice, and the first time the CGI stuck out like a sore thumb, especially in scenes with 2 Ezras looked like garbage each shot, but the second time in a diff theater the cgi looked damn near unnoticeable in shots i was waiting for to judge the bad cgi again. So it may be the quality of the theaters too.

But ya, the bad cgi, the annoying younger Barry, then just the whole film being kind of a bastardization of several better stories are the biggest complaints i hear about the film itself. Then the whole Ezra being a deviant psychopath thing.

@DaScarletClunge - There is another version available. Poor quality of course, but then the theatrical version is poor quality too.

@ObserverIO - did they send an update to theatres or something? I may try to view it on a better screen the 2nd time around.

@TheVandalore - you might be right, first time I saw it in one of those artzy fartzy independent cinemas. May try to get a better one this time around
