Jeffrey Dean Morgan On Why He Loves The Comic Book Genre!

The star of Watchmen and The Losers has revealed why films based on comic books are so appealing to him...

"I like the genre, but it seems to me that the best scripts coming out right now are based on graphic novels and comic books," the actor told MTV News. "The best characters and the smartest writing is coming from that world."

"I don't know if it's just a trend or how long it's going to last, but it's obviously been going for a year or longer, and studios have really caught on to it now."

As for why he thinks his name keeps coming up in discussion for roles in comic book movies he said, "I'm seeing a lot of them now. I guess I happen to be the right age or weathered enough now where I guess it works for me to be in these things."

"Right now it happens to the best stuff, and you want to go where the best directors are and the best writers are — and right now this is where it is. I know it happens to be the comic book genre, but I'll be damned if it isn't the best genre happening right now for us as performers. I'm happy to be in it."

Comic book movies are where its at right now, look at Dark Knight, Kick-Ass, and Watchmen those are some of the best movies to come out in the last two year and its a sign when a comic book movie is done right they are so much better and worth a rewatch.

you know whats funny?? this guy just admitted that he WANTED to do was many CBM's as possible, yet no one complains about it or says it'll be confusing. in fact, everyone commenting HERE is saying "good for him."

but someone like Chris Evans does multiple CBM's, and all of sudden people get confused who he's playing?

people are strange...

@ SLC

yeah, well so is Chris Evans. yes he was the Human Torch. but its a dead franchise that doesn't matter anymore, and it was NEVER a part of the Marvel Movie-verse. so its no different, really.

Personally I love that people are wanting to be in as many comic book movies as possible. It is just a testament to the genre and to comic book movies in general, that their themes and messages are able to stay true through generations and connect to broad audiences. About the whole Chris Evans thing i'll be the first to admit that I brought up the point in conversations that he was playing two comic book characters and didn't like it. But A: I just don't like him as an actor and he could play any role and i wouldn't like it. And B: He is playing two of the most famous MARVEL characters, and they both exist in the same world (at least in the comics). I think that is what everyone is complaining about because it just doesn't make sense. Even Stan Lee said it was "odd". There is no fear that the Comedian from Watchmen and Dean's Character from the Losers are going to run into each other. Obviously the two actors and their comic book roles are two completely different situations, and trying to say they are the same or are similar situations is just stupid.

not really. Cap and the Human Torch are NEVER going to run into each other in the movies. at least not any time soon.

@ corndog Right, i mentioned that....? It has nothing to do with them running into each other in the movies. It is just the fact that these movies are supposed to be a representation of the comics, so having something like Chris playing the Human Torch and Captain America is wrong. And as I said, the issue with me, as well as other people was that in the comics, they do run into each other. And the Comedian and whoever the hell is is playing in the Losers won't ever see each other in the comics.

@ elephant

i just don't see the problem. yeah, they know each other in the comics, but
1) these aren't the comics.

2) Evans played HT in a series that has absolutely nothing to do with the Cap or Avengers movies.

3) Evans will NEVER play HT again.

4) FF is supposedly getting rebooted, so someone different will be playing HT.

I guess what i don't get is how you say that these are supposed to be a "representation of the comics, so having something like Chris playing the Human Torch and Captain America is wrong." Yet you're fine with the fact that Cap and HT don't know each other in the movies to begin with. yes, they are supposed to be "representations", that does NOT mean they are 100% faithful. its actually impossible for them to be 100% faithful.

@CorndogBurglar-I miss your avatar.

@elephantknowsbest-It's called acting. Chris Evans is not the Human Torch or Captain America in real life. I can understand if you don't like the guy as an actor, but I'm just not getting how it's "wrong" for an ACTOR to play in different roles, however closely related they may be in a completely different medium.

heh, you're the second person to say that to me today. question, do you see the batman and robin one right now?? i never changed it back, so i'm wondering what's going on.
KevinBacon01
KevinBacon01 - 4/22/2010, 11:34 AM
@ Corndog You must be gay for Chris Evans lol

Anyways I know these are not comics, they are movies. It is hard sometimes to tell the difference, but when i see people moving and can hear sounds and voices Im usually sure it's in fact a movie. I know they will never be 100% accurate, I blame Hollywoods pseudo-intellectual hipster attitude for that. Also it's not "fine" with me that they don't know each other. I would like for the Avengers and the FF to have a movie together, but in origin stories, as these are, it wouldn't work. I'm sure you know that. ; ) It takes time for movies to be made and having something like that obviously takes a while as we see the Avengers being set up with five different movies. And to the fact that the FF is being rebooted, there is no argument there, your right, it is a valid point. But the reboot hasn't even been written or casted, it was just a statement released by MARVEL because they knew people would be pissed with their decision. It was put out there so people like you could use it in an argument. So until the movies are supposedly "rebooted" Evans will be the movie worlds HT and mine. Now to the statement that "Evans will NEVER play HT again." This is also a valid point because it is true, that is because those movies (or at least the second one) [frick]ing blew. And I blame the actors in large part for that. Evans sucks as an actor and if it wasn't for his 9 movie contract Im sure he would never play Cap. again, because he is the world's shittiest actor (again that's my opinion). Ignoring something like that is wrong, at least to the comic book fan, I know the majority of the viewing public won't see the difference. But the fact that i read comics, makes the fact the he is playing two marvel characters an issue.

@Josh: I could see him as Hercules. I could, also, see him as DC's Lobo.

@CDB: I know, man. Chris is far from the first:

((Not in order, as you can tell, and these a just Marvel ones, and may not be all of them))
Ben Foster: Spacker Dave and Angel.
Ryan Reynolds: Hannibal King and Wade Wilson.
Sam Elliot: General Thunderbolt Ross and Carter Slade.
Jon Favreau: Franklin "Foggy" Nelson and Harold "Happy" Hogan.
Ray Stevenson: Frank Castle and Volstagg.
Rebecca Romijn: Mystique and Joan.

@ elephant

eeehhhhhhhh...lol. i'm not even sure where to start with this, lol. normally i'd flip on you, but i'll assume you're just messing around, because i've seen you around and you aren't normally hostile. so no, i'm not GAY for Evans, i DO like him as an actor, and i think he was a great HT, and he was also awesome in Sunshine. in all honesty, i haven't seen him in much more than those. but i like what i see...in a non-gay way, lol.

The FF and Avengers not having a movie together is something thats impossible because Fox owns the movie rights for the FF. so its literally impossible for that to happen (as i'm sure you know :) ) and when Fox mentioned an FF reboot, it was literally over a year before Evans was cast as Cap. so i don't think they did it to give people an argument, lol.

anyway, its all personal opinion. i'm 28, and i've been reading comics since i COULD read. before that, my neighbor was pointing characters out to me and telling me about them. point is, i'm a HUGE comic fan, yet this casting doesn't bother me in the slightest. if they were in the same world, or there was a chance that they would run into each other, then yeah i could see it. but as it stands now, there's no chance of an Avengers/FF crossover movie, so i just don't see the problem with it.

but good talk, its hard finding people around here that will talk without arguing :)

@ Jonah I'm right here BRO lol, sorry i couldn't keep arguing about it. I had other shit to do besides comment on this website. I did though, as you said "got the point." And while i understood CDB's argument, I must respectfully disagree with it. It is natural and healthy for people to have debates and disagreements, especially when a topic such as Chris Evans playing Cap is discussed on a comic book movie site. This is why I love this website, it is an awesome place to discuss these issues with intelligent people!!!
