THOR 5 Rumored To Feature Darker Tone Than Taika Waititi's Movies; ROGUE ONE's Gareth Edwards Eyed To Direct

The God of Thunder's corner of the MCU got seriously silly thanks to Taika Waititi, but a new rumour suggests Thor 5 will feature a darker tone thanks to a filmmaker who has experience with "serious" work.

Thor was an effective introduction for the MCU's take on the Asgardian superhero, and while Thor: The Dark World wasn't the Game of Thrones-inspired adventure we'd hoped for, it was still a serviceable sequel that pitted the Avenger against a forgettable villain in Malekith.

Thor: Ragnarok wasn't to everyone's liking but still felt like a breath of fresh air for the character; unfortunately, Marvel Studios gave filmmaker Taika Waititi a little too much freedom with Love and Thunder, and the result was a movie even Chris Hemsworth has acknowledged was too silly.

Now, scooper Daniel Richtman is claiming to have learned that Thor 5 will boast a much darker tone than Waititi's movies. That's going to be welcomed by fans keen to see the God of Thunder get a little more serious rather than him constantly cracking jokes and doing the splits!

It's added that Marvel Studios wants a director who has experience with "serious work" to helm the next instalment, with Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Creator helmer Gareth Edwards said to be one of the filmmakers being eyed for the job.

We'd recommend taking all of this with a pinch of salt for now, but it sounds like the Thor franchise is about to take a step in the right direction. The tonal shift shouldn't be too jarring, though we'd bet on much of what Waititi added to the franchise (Korg and Love, for example) being ditched.

"I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean?" Hemsworth said of what we could see from a possible Thor 5 earlier this year. "I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans."

"You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know...am I at that stage? Who knows?"

If this is really where the God of Thunder's story ends, then putting comedy aside for a darker tone will be a must. Whether the movie will come out before or after the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars is hard to say, but we'd be shocked if Hemsworth isn't in one or both of those projects.

Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce Thor 5, though Waititi did recently say the movie is in development without him.

What do you hope to see from Thor 5?

Awesome. The thing I have always loved about comic books is getting to see and read different artists and writers takes on my favorite superheroes. I’ve enjoyed what we got so far but I’m also ready for something different.

@marvel72 - same. Think based off of The Creator, I think Edwards can bring back that scale of Asgard we saw in the first and second Thor movies pretty well too

Marvel seems to understand that we don't want a goofy Thor

@WakandaTech - Except for in Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame, in which we very much did want a goofy Thor. But agreed that it's time to adjust the tone for a final chapter.

@Comicmoviejunki - Ragnarok grossed 200K more than Dark World, and 400K more than Thor. Infinity War and Endgame added another BILLION to Ragnorok's take. Even if YOU weren't happy with Thor's characterization, WE (ie most every other moviegoer and critic) disagreed.

@ClintThaHamster - it's goofballs like you got us goofy Thor and clown Hulk

@Comicmoviejunki - How exactly? How does my appreciation of those movies make me retroactively responsible for their creation?

@ClintThaHamster - creators of these projects think "OH, Ragnarok made money. People love silly Thor". Then they tend to go full retard in the sequel. Just because the movie made money doesn't mean it's because Thor was a complete idiot. The trailers didn't sell goofy. They sold Hela and Planet Hulk, and Ragnarok storyline.

@ClintThaHamster - you're not making any sense. I walked out of Thor 4 completely cringed out. I wasn't going to not go see 2 epic Avengers movie because it had drunk uncle Thor in it. Avengers movies made billions and according to you it's because cockless Thor. Do us all a favor and don't become a film maker.

@Comicmoviejunki - Just trying to diss out how I'm somehow responsible for the characterizations of Thor and Hulk that you hate sooooo much when all I did was see the movies, just like you.

I think it'd be an over-correction to go too dark but it definitely needs to be more serious than Love & Thunder, and even though I love Ragnarok it would also make sense to be more serious than that especially if they want to look at it as a final chapter.
