We're used to seeing Chris Hemsworth kicking butt in the MCU as Thor, but in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the actor will get to show a new side of himself as the twisted Dementus.
However, while these characters couldn't be any different, there's one thing they do have in common: a cape!
"It was a real departure, and it was nice...I was about to say it was nice not to wear a cape, but I did have a cape in this film," Hemsworth tells Entertainment Weekly. "And it's red - or it becomes red eventually, as well. The absurdity of that."
"There's a whole lot of rules that you have to stick to [with superhero films]," the actor continued. "It's not intentional to be a comparison of Thor, but I found a wonderful departure to it. To play the villain, transform, and inhabit a completely different physicality was a lot of fun. I loved it. And it was the real attraction."
Despite having spent upwards of a decade playing a character who wears a cape, Hemsworth admitted elsewhere in the interview that he hates them. Why? Because they're "so impractical" he explained, adding one of Thor's was "a foot or so shorter than the normal cape" but not practical because he was "tripping over it all the time."
In contrast, Furiosa allowed him, "to dirty it up and to be messy and ugly and violent and chaotic, rather than being in the somewhat predictable box of the hero in a superhero space. There's a whole lot of rules that you have to stick to [with superhero films]. With this, I could throw that out the window, which was nice."
It's unclear when Hemsworth will reprise the role of Thor in the MCU. The next Avengers movies seem likely, though the actor recently admitted he'd like to take another crack at the hero after becoming a "parody" of himself in Thor: Love and Thunder.
As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Anya Taylor-Joy takes on Furiosa's title role, and along with Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, the film also includes Alyla Browne and Tom Burke.
Miller penned the script with Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Nico Lathouris. The filmmaker has enlisted an impressive creative team, including several of his longtime collaborators (including costume designer Jenny Beavan and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, both of whom won an Oscar for their work on Fury Road).
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga arrives in theaters in North America on May 24 and internationally beginning on May 22.
