Chris Hemsworth Says "I Became A Parody Of Myself" In Taika Waititi's THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

Thor: Love and Thunder drew largely negative reviews from fans when it was released in 2022, and Chris Hemsworth has once again addressed the movie's failings, saying it left him feeling like a "parody."

Thor: Love and Thunder had all the makings of the best Marvel Studios movie ever. Heavily inspired by Jason Aaron's Thor run and featuring both The Mighty Thor and Gorr the God Butcher, the sequel has a lot going for it.

Among those plus points was Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. He'd successfully reinvented the God of Thunder in that 2017 blockbuster and fans were excited to see what came next. Unfortunately, the result was a movie which largely disappointed fans and let down both its new and returning characters.

Waititi, who was given perhaps too much freedom with Thor: Love and Thunder, has largely shrugged off the complaints. Chris Hemsworth, however, has addressed them head-on and doesn't shy away from acknowledging where the movie fell short.

Talking to Vanity Fair, the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star made it clear he still hasn't forgiven himself. "I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself," Hemsworth admits. "I didn’t stick the landing."

The movie was too silly, becoming a full-blown comedy which saw even Russell Crowe prancing around the place as Zeus in what may go down as one of the MCU's biggest wastes of an actor.

Reflecting on his time as Thor, Hemsworth admits he'd grown frustrated with playing the character before Thor: Ragnarok. "Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team," he says of Joss Whedon's Avengers movies. "I would read everyone else’s lines, and go, Oh, they got way cooler stuff. They’re having more fun. What’s my character doing?"

"It was always about, 'You’ve got the wig on. You’ve got the muscles. You’ve got the costume. Where’s the lighting?' Yeah, I’m part of this big thing, but I’m probably pretty replaceable."

For what it's worth, his co-star Robert Downey Jr. disagrees. "First off, Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt - lots of implied limitations - but he and Ken Branagh figured out how to transcend, make him somehow relatable but godlike," the Oscar winner says. "Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex psyche out of all us Avengers. He’s got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire, and gentleness."

Hemsworth will likely return as Thor in the next Avengers movies. Will that be his final appearance as the God of Thunder? The actor may be ready to move on from the MCU, but if another reinvention beckons, Love and Thunder may get a sequel.

Remember, with $760.9 million at the worldwide box office, it wasn't that far behind Thor: Ragnarok's $865 million haul (and even a drop of over $100 million was a good result in the post-pandemic era).

Do you think Marvel Studios can get Thor back on the right track after his last solo outing?

Let's face it, the moment Taika Waititis entered the MCU and not only took on Thor but adapted Ragnarok, it all went to crap. No one takes Thor seriously anymore. I don't know how that can be fixed.

@TheLight -

Yeah, I agree. Taika was the wrong choice from the beginning. I know people like Ragnarok but I still felt it missed the mark for Thor. It was only good because of Hulk and Goldbloom. There was too much parody in it for my liking.

Infinity War had a chance at redeeming the character, but the Russos' [frick]ed the character over because they wanted to reference another film in Endgame.

Exactly. And Waititis wanted to do "Akira". We dodged a nuke with that one.

@Scarilian - Yeah, there were some good moments of Thor in Infinity War but too much of his character went through so many identity crisis, I didn't know which Thor I was seeing.

@TheLight -

Yeah I could only imagine how terrible that would have been.

It’s not like he’s a bad filmmaker. I loved jojorabbit. His style worked really well there.
It’s just when he gets his hands on preexisting IP, he has ZERO respect to the original source.

The whole movie was just a parody of Thor to begin with.

I've got no problem with comedy stories in the comics, but with live action it's tough because that's it, that's just what we get, if we don't like it, well too bad.

The MCU Thor was strangely a copy of the 1988 TV Thor. Even down to the beer scene. Then came GOTG and the MCU started doing weightless parodies like Ragnarok and Love and Thunder. But Hemsworth is said to have wanted Thor to become a comedy after he did the SNL shit-show.

The best depiction of Thor that we have had was in Infinity War. He still had some comedic moments, but he was a serious character that you could tell was immensely powerful.

If we get Hemsworth as Thor again, let’s get a similar tone to that.

@mountainman - "Bring me Thanos!" is still my favorite moment in the MCU.

@mountainman - by FAR the best version of Thor and it's not even close at all

@MotherGooseUPus @TheFinestSmack - Ragnarok is the best of his solos, but the character’s tone was even off in that one. It’s like they overcompensated for his first two overly serious movies by turning him into a joke.

@mountainman - There’s nothing wrong with having humor in a movie. In fact i see it as necessary in most movies, but it is important to find the right balance. I agree that they did it perfectly in Infinity War. He had some great, funny lines such as, “All words are made up,” and “Good luck, morons.” That said, when he arrived back on Earth, he was a total badass.

@RolandD - Thor has been funny in the comics forever. I’m not against humor. I’m against goofiness and inconsistency with the character. Thor would not be holding an obnoxiously long split during battle or whining to his weapons about if they like him. The examples you gave were perfect (or him continually calling Rocket a “rabbit”).

@Nomis929 - That opening scene was essentially still Infinity War Thor before they turned him fat and depressive. I’d also argue that in the final battle he was awesome too. It’s just all that in the middle stuff he sucked. And then more or less repeating the same arc in L&T of being unable to move on from all his loss was even worse.

@mountainman - Man... that a close call.

At least "fat" Thor Redeem himself in the end battle...but Scared Hulk never got his mojo back to take a second shot at fighting Thanos!

@Nomis929 - He got the snap to bring everyone back. It’s tough to choose which of those characters have been treated worse in the last 5 years. At least Thor’s adopted kid isn’t as ugly as Hulk’s biological kid is.

@mountainman - Totally agreed. I don't hate Thor in Ragnarok as others do, but they Russos toned the comedy down a little bit and it was simply perfect.

Thor doesn't need to be a Kratos. He just takes himself seriously and that's what's funny about it.

In L&T he became a clown. The moment he used Stormbreaker as a witch broom I knew it was over.

@mountainman - the first "Thor" is very good. And IS Thor. Waititi's Ragnarok was.a sitcom.

Well, one good thing Love and Thunder did is that it has set up Thor to become a father and mentor figure to Love and finally make use of the wisdom he has gained over his life experiences. Maybe give him a send-off fifth film. Heck, he could even see parts of his younger self in Hercules and end up guiding him as well. That's how you build up to their dynamic as well.
