THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Gets Hammered By A 68% Second Weekend Drop With Estimated $46 Million Haul

Thor: Love and Thunder has taken something of a hammering at the North American box office this weekend, suffering a massive 68% drop from its mighty opening last week. Find more details after the jump...

Deadline is reporting that Thor: Love and Thunder suffered a brutal 68% drop during its second weekend at the North American box office. That ranks among the MCU's worst, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' 67% decline. It's also tied with Black Widow, though that isn't the best comparison thanks to its simultaneous release on Disney+.

Those of you with a good memory may recall Spider-Man: No Way Home also dropping by 68%, but that's another comparison that doesn't really work when the threequel broke box office records and was making ridiculously large sums of money on a daily basis (making a large dip during its second weekend an inevitability).

In other words, Thor: Love and Thunder's decline has to be blamed on the mostly mixed response to the movie from fans and critics alike.

Taika Waititi's film hasn't resonated with people the same way Thor: Ragnarok did back in 2017, which is evident from these box office numbers. Still, a $46 million haul this weekend is not to be sniffed at, and neither is the fact that it exceeded expectations last week with its mighty $144 million debut.

As of right now, the God of Thunder's latest solo adventure has earned a total $233.2 million domestically and sits at $498 million at the worldwide box office. How it performs over the next few weeks should be very interesting indeed.

"Too silly to take seriously, there’s still a lot to love about Thor: Love and Thunder, but unlike Thor: Ragnarok, it’s unlikely to be a movie you’ll fall in love with," we said in our review of the movie earlier this month. "Marvel Studios may be developing a quantity over quality issue."

On a happier note, Marvel Studios has released a few new stills from Thor: Love and Thunder showcasing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), and Drax (Dave Bautista).

@BuzzKillington - According to every box office website I was able to find, it is at just under $500M. Not sure where people are getting this 712 number from…

@VictorAlonzo - Exactly. Such a shallow interpretation and he’s wrong about how much it’s made adding 212 million dollars to its profits. He’s definitely the problem

@defenderofthefaith - yes but the issue with bad comic book movies is people go thinking it’s good and by that Points it’s made the money. I wouldn’t say BO takings are indicative of quality necessarily. Word has got out now that this is shit
malschla
malschla - 7/17/2022, 7:22 PM
@BuzzKillington - That appears to be an error on their site. It isn’t even close to that. It seems like they used the “worldwide” number instead of “overseas” or something like that. Every other source has the movie just shy of $500M worldwide.

68% isn't the worst drop though. Click bait.

Im not a lover of the movie either but this isn't surprising news.

Next.

@UniqNo -

It's pretty big when you see the whole picture.

Dr strange 2 had a big drop because it opened huuuuge!

Bw dropped because it was dealing with a pandemic that had alot of restrictions at the time and it was dealing with a day and date release.

Thor 4 on the other hand had a universally loved film that came before it and theaters attendance back to prepandemic levels.

This drop has alot to do that the film kinda sucks🤡

Conquistador - 7/17/2022, 12:07 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - Homecoming had like a 63% drop before the pandemic and was critically a major hit.

Yeah the film wasn't great, but these numbers aren't anything crazy. All your other points are true though.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/17/2022, 12:24 PM
@UniqNo - 70% second weekend drop, 68% at RT, 58% at MC, B+ at CS

Gizmoduck
Gizmoduck - 7/17/2022, 12:28 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - BW dropped because it sucked, DS2 dropped because it sucked compared to the movie it just came off of(SM:NWH.)

This dropped because its not anything special - it was OK, it was a bit too silly, but taika is that type of director/writer, so at the end of the day thats not a deal breaker. I expected everything I got, but again a disappointing villain and overall seemed rushed storyline.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 7/17/2022, 12:50 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - in the greater scheme of things its hardly causing them to go off course.. Phase 4 as a whole has had a drop on being graciously accepted when compared to their earlier stuff.

It's just not a suprise at this point...is my point.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/17/2022, 1:03 PM
@UniqNo - They really need to start building toward F4 and X-Men. And we just saw the first step towards X-Men. But they need to ramp it up.

The problem I see is that these characters we've seen so far in Phase 4 are not the heavy hitters, except for Spidey, Strange, and Thor. But only 1 of those movies was extremely well received. And the other thing is that it feels like we've gotten a lot of content in Phase 4 already, but we still have no clu3 what it's building toward. I'm hoping Black Panther 2 and Ant-Man 3 show us exactly what's in store. Because right now everything feels very disjointed with no common goal.

Conquistador - 7/17/2022, 1:31 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I feel the usual palette cleanser that is Ant-Man will be the one to fully show where we're going with kang...fingers crossed.

Edit:

Holy shit Thor love and thunder is at 712 million without china and only a week and a half in theaters😳?

I take back what I said. This is huge💯💥🤡❤️💪

mastakilla39 - 7/17/2022, 3:03 PM
@Gizmoduck - Nah BW dropped huge on the 2nd weekend because everyone besides die hards pirated it. The 1st week where only true die hard fans paid to see it in theaters, had an 80 mil opening at the height of the pandemic. Fast 9 and Bond 25 opened the same year and with a lower opening weekend and still managed to make 700 mil+.

BW would have made more than Bond 25 & Fast 9 had disney not released it on D+ where it was easily pirated around the globe.

Any MCU film making 700 mil+ is a hit. Taika Waititi is prob going to be back for the next one too despite the mixed reaction.
