Bay now hooked on Transformers

It is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the year, and will definitely go down in folklore as one of the greatest cult films of all time if it is done well; but Transformers, director Michael Bay wasn’t always a Transformers fan.

"I was not a Transformers fan before I signed on for this movie," Bay said in a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., over the weekend. "I think I was 2 years old when the toys came out, so I just discovered girls then ... instead of Optimus Prime," he added, referring of course to the leader of the Autobots. Can I ask though, who discovers girls at age 2?

However thankfully (hopefully) executive-producer Steven Spielberg contacted Bay believing he was the right man for the job. Michael Bay, director of such blockbusters as Armageddon and Pearl Harbor, then went to Transformers school, even visiting the toymaker Hasbro, where he was then introduced to the Transformers ‘lore’ and subsequently hooked.

"It just hit me that if I make this really real, it could be something very new and different. And so I quickly became probably one of the bigger Transformers fans in the world. And I tried to make this movie for non-Transformers fans, OK? And I wanted it to be a little bit more, if you could say, adult."

And while I find his view that he is now one of the biggest fans in the world a little preposterous, considering just how massive the fan base for the hit 80’s cartoon is, I definitely admire the man’s passion for a movie that we are all looking forward to.
