Adult Swim is known for discovering indie creators and bringing their ideas on board for a full series. Examples of this are Rick and Morty, which began as a Youtube short entitled Doc and Mharti, and Michael Cusack's Yolo becoming 2020's Yolo: Crystal Fantasy.
Similarly, Adult Swim is prepping to air the third season of an Olan Rogers-created animated sci-fi space-opera comedy this weekend. The idea started as a short series titled Gary Space which Rogers himself wasn't pleased with before finding full-blown success.
The ten-part Youtube series was noticed by Conan O'Brien and subsequently pitched to TBS and accepted for a full-season order. Now, fast forward years later, and Final Space feels right at home with its third season premiering on Adult Swim, the perfect platform for the show.
Final Space has an impressive voice cast which features Tom Kenny (Spongebob Squarepants), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Jane Lynch (Wreck-It Ralph), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), and more. Rogers continues to voice the main character of Gary Goodsend just as he initially did, despite his efforts to stop.
Ahead of the newest season's premiere, we spoke with Olan Rogers himself about the sci-fi animated series to understand a little bit more about the universe Gary inhabits and in which these space adventures take place. While chatting, we also learned a detailed history of where the show began to now and how he believes that the newest season features the best of both worlds when it comes to Seasons 1 and 2. You can hear it all for yourself below, just under the synopsis for Final Space!
Season 3 begins where Season 2 ended. Gary and the crew enter Final Space and rescue Quinn. But now they are trapped there, and everything becomes about survival. Pursued by Invictus and the Lord Commander, who are determined to capture Mooncake and use him to grow even more powerful, their only hope is to team up with earth’s only living survivor to find a way out before it’s all too late.
Season 3 of Final Space premieres on Adult Swim this Sunday, March 21st, at midnight. Listen to our entire chat with the creator below, and be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot!
