Preacher Movie won't be completely crammed

Some more of Sam Mendes on how much of the Preacher comics storyline will be kept in the movie.

ComingSoon.net talked to Away We Go director Sam Mendes about comic book adaptation Preacher, which he is set to direct from a script by John August at Columbia Pictures. Here's what he said:

CS: I'm personally very interested in the idea of you doing "Preacher" because I was a big fan of "Road to Perdition" and I'm a fan of those comics as well. How's that been progressing in terms of John August developing the script?
Mendes: I think it's an incredible piece of material and I'm very hopeful about John's script, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

CS: Do you have any idea if you're going to try and condense the entire series into one movie or are you going to jump around use portions of it?
Mendes: Oh, he wouldn't do the entire series in one movie. It would be impossible to do all nine volumes in one movie, that would be one long movie, and it wouldn't do justice of it. It will not attempt to do all of it, but there's so much wonderful stuff that I wouldn't know what to leave out.

The Vertigo series, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.

-From Keven-

Personally I think hardcore fans probably will be dissapointed either way because Sam's right - there are far too many amazing moments throughout the series to be included right away.

I'm reservedly optomistic about this.

I'm not a Preacher scribe or anything, so I won't bust a stitch if they aren't blindly faithful to the source material. I think that mindset is completely over-rated anyway. Just make a great movie. On a side note, I think John August will be able to turn out something very juicy.

I just started reading this series and I love it already. I predict the movie will go the same way as Constantine, not very accurate but still a good movie. Hope it paves the way for more Vertigo movies.

It's such a big story that I'll just be happy if they get the spirit and the basic characters right. Jessie's slanted moral code and Texas style of justice, leading him to hunt down a negligent god, seems like a big task for Christian weak-sauce Hollywood. If they shy away from the controversial material and keep random points of interest like Wanted did, it won't matter how good it is.

Constantine wasn't as bad, though it still shied away from him being an unrepentant occultist. He was more of an embattled catholic who knew magic.

I'm hopeful preacher will be even better though, regardless. Mendez and August would make a great team. It makes me eerily optimistic. Plus, I love this book. If I wasn't hopeful, I’d just be depressed :D

Thanks for posting the story! (even if someone else did too :P)

I should add that I DID totally dig constantine, despite the differences in the comic. It was still a great flick.

@Anil Rickly---A CONSTANTINE SEQUEL WOULD ROCK! :)

They need to hurry up and make one already! PREACHER ESPECIALLY!!!

AND they HAVE to do SANDMAN & DEATH: THE HIGH COST OF LIVING!!!

WHAT'S THE HOLD-UP, HOLLYWOOD?!!!

OMG KEV you've got a fansite too lol!!! Nice post! ; )

Anyways, they don't need to cram loads in the first movie, just do some of the early stuff an the rest can be for potential sequels!!! So this is at Columbia pictures and not WARNERS??? Cool! It's still a pity, they could've crammed it all in a HBO or BBC series over a few seasons, but oh well, we'll take what we can get lol!!! Hopefully its gonna be very faithful to the book!

Ya gotta luv ARSE FACE!!!

I wonder what he uses to wipe his mouth heh heh? ; D

LAME... another failure..
I don't understand the foray into these obscure comic's to make movies out of.. I mean did any of these lame producers watch "The Spirit"??? I waited until it was on DVD and ordered it from Netflix in Blueray just to see it in as close of a theater experience as possible and all I can say is that was 2 hours of my life that I wish I could get back.. I will think back when I'm on my death bed wishing I hadn't squarndered those 2 hours on that LAME movie.. I knew nothing about the spirit and I figured how bad could it be Frank Miller the guy whote wrote some awesome stories directing "YES".. NO Wrong.. this guy should never get to helm another big comic book movie or any other kind EVER!!! It's not his arena.. stick to the mags.. there are so many other well known sotries and characters to put money behind who really believed this was a good idea.. they had to have known from the dailys it was going to be a huge steaming pile of !@#$%!!!

Oh yeah, news is coming in regular enough for this now, im optimistic because Mendes is such a good director.

ScorpioEagle1 so because you have never heard of it then its obscure? The Spirit was shit but that didnt have anything to do with it being a lesser known comic..u shouldnt give an opinion on something you have never read before..its very annoying!

Hey Keven

cut turd? :) I thought all the talk about "body fluids" and bathroom functions were what you complained about the most? Wasn't jman77 the one who put cut turd in his article? You bitched him out for that, no?
