Joss Whedon Says There's Still Hope For BUFFY Spin-Off RIPPER

The director of The Avengers reckons we might still see a series focusing on Anthony Head's character, Rupert Giles, from Buffy The Vampire Slayer..

I'm sure most Buffy fans will remember back when there was talk of Rupert Giles - Buffy's mentor/father figure played brilliantly by Anthony Head - getting his own solo series. Apparently it was something that very nearly happened, and would have been set in Giles' native UK, back when he had earned the nic-name "Ripper". It was assumed that since so much time had passed that Whedon must have given up on the idea, but not so. In an in-depth interview with The AV Club, the director still sounds enthusiastic about making the show - at least in some form!..

“The thing about Ripper – the essence of it – is that the BBC came to me at one point like, ‘It doesn’t have to be Ripper. It can just be [Anthony Stewart Head], and there’s magic, and he’s Tony, cuz he’s awesome.’ And that’s the thing: For some reason, he keeps getting sexier every year. That’s not happening to me! I’m like, ‘What are you doing?’ And that story was always about a mature guy who’s lived, and about the choices he’s made. So you could make that now, or you could make it 10 years from now. And I’ve tortured Tony more than any other living human with, ‘We’re definitely gonna do this!’ Because I thought we were. He’s working so much, though, I’d feel too guilty. But that’s the thing with Ripper: It doesn’t go away in my head because he’s still right for it, and he could still bring it.”

I'm sure there are still many fans that would like to see this. Giles was always a very mysterious and interesting character. But are there those that feel the time has past to revisit anything from Buffy The Vampire Slayer now? Sound off below.

buffy had too many silly fight scenes.

can't somebody start making films where the supposed expert fighter uses muay thai, wrestling, boxing or brazilian jiu jitsu? everything is still from the 70's, kung fu and karate and all that other stuff that doesn't work.

I think most fans would appreciate a 'Spike' spinoff or maybe a 'Angel' film. Vampires are very big nowadays it has to appeal to the Twilight generation, big money maker right there.

I'd give a Giles spinoff a chance.

Was never in to Buffy or Angel, but this accutally sounds like a good ideá. Making it a quality production, with good actors, and for a more mature audience.

I love Buffy, and Angel really grew on me too. Really, Whedon hasn't done anything I haven't liked. And Tony Head IS the man... So bring it on

I was excited when I first heard about this years ago. But that was around the same time he was thinking about doing a Spike spin-off movie, too. This is never gonna happen.

I liked both Buffy and Angel, but Spike was my favorite. I would definately check out a series based on Giles.

@brewtownpsych- Buffy was meant to be "campy" most of the time, sometimes they would be having conversations and just off-handly killing vamps without stopping their conversation, kind of where the whole "scubby gang" term came from in the series. I dont think serious fighting would work on a vamp, dont see them tapping out to a choke hold or wrestling around on the ground using brazilian jiu jitsu, just my opinion though. I understand where u are coming from but just dont think it would have worked as well as some of the cheesy fighting that was "meant" to be cheesy.

I never really watched the Buffy-verse, but I heard good things about it.

Maybe when the numbers for Avengers rolls in, the project could be revived.

It would certainly be a good way to get those of the next generation like myself into Whedon's works - rather than that criffing reboot.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a great movie although Rutger Hauer just phoned it in. I still remember Kristy Swanson on a late night talk show complaining about how she was the only one doing publicity for the movie.

Ripper is a great idea and now maybe Wheadon will have the clout to get it done.

He looks a little older these days but he could still do it.

wouldnt mind watching this tbh!
if i had to give an opinion on it i would rather see it kinda half and half present time and a re telling of his stories from when and how he earned the nickname "ripper".
have someone like Iwan Rheon, russell tovey or luke mably play a young giles

What was the point of this guy even being in Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance? What a waste of a perfectly good actor!

Yes please, more Anthony Head. Loved him in Buffy & even more so in Repo! The Genetic Opera. I also popped for his cameo in Ghost Rider 2.

This is a pretty cool idea but I would rather they make a spin off about Spike because he is my favorite Buffy character. James Marsters is a very underrated actor and I want more Spike.

There will be no more Spike. Marsters has already said that he is too old to play an ageless vampire.

Buffy and angel were the best shows on Tv. Anything Joss does is awesome. Anyone that said Buffy was a stupid show, guess they don't like to watch great shows. Oh well, guess they left out. Hope Joss will do Ripper, cause I know it will be great

Given that Giles dies at the end of BTVS Season 8, the entire series could be his life flashing before his eyes. And at the end of he series finale we zoom out from inside Giles' mind to watch Angelus break his neck.
