Batwoman has mentioned Bruce Wayne's mysterious disappearance on multiple occasions, but Sunday's season finale finally gave him a face...it's just not on his body. Instead, it's Tommy Elliot/Hush who is masquerading as the Wayne Industries billionaire, and showrunner Caroline Dries has elaborated on the decision to bring "Bruce" into The CW series.
"Correct, he is just MIA," she told TV Line when the site asked whether Bruce is believed dead. "Luke had a little moment in Episode 3 where Kate is like, 'Luke, do you really think Bruce is coming back?' and Luke had to say, 'No.' In his mind, I think he’s put it to bed, so this is obviously going to open up all of those stories in his life when he comes face to face with his hero."
Asked what challenges Tommy might face as Bruce, Dries adds, "Well, there couldn’t have been a better person to impersonate Bruce. He’s going to have 'the Bruce Wayne experience' — he’s not going to waste a moment of his new lifestyle. But he will face obvious obstacles because the people Bruce surrounds himself with are cunning and wise, and they’ve seen antics like this before."
When it comes to how much Hush knows about Gotham City's daring Dark Knights, the showrunner explained, "Yes, Tommy does know that Bruce is Batman, and he does know that Kate is Batwoman." The series will, however, have to address why the returning Bruce chooses not to suit up.
At the end of the interview, Dries was quizzed on whether Gabriel Mann will return as Tommy, and indicated that we haven't necessarily seen the last of him in this show. "He is so fun to work with...I don’t have anything really in my mind planned, but when you meet a good actor, you find a way to keep working with them."
Batwoman season 2 is expected to premiere on The CW next January.
