Lanterns Has Broken Hal Jordan For Five Episodes. The Comics Did The Same Thing!

Our episode 5 piece called what Lanterns is doing to Hal Jordan character assassination, and more than 90 of you piled into the comments. Now there's a rumor of a Green Lantern and I've got a theory...

Our episode 5 piece used the phrase "character assassination" about what Lanterns has been doing to Hal Jordan. With more than ninety comments, that apparently struck a nerve, and the argument is still raging in our comment section.

This week a rumor started making the rounds saying DC Studios wants to fast-track a Green Lantern movie off the back of the show. It traces back to a single anonymous social media account, and nobody at DC or Warner Bros. has said a word about it, so it was reported, correctly, as a rumor.

Those two things aren't sitting quite right with me, so I've been trying to work out what DC Studios is up to, and I think I may be onto something.

Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan has spent this season as the older, compromised half of the partnership, and the show keeps stacking things against him. Chandler was asked about the episode 5 shocker this week and we ran his answer: 'I could care less for [SPOILER]. I did my job.'

For a lot of readers, Hal IS Green Lantern. He's the one from the comic books and cartoons that they grew up with. The one who's already had a movie, and everybody agreed to forget that it ever existed. Watching the first live-action project since 2011 to put Hal back on screen turn him into the problem stings a bit, and KineticAce's comment on our piece summed up the mood: "Hal is still a better character than John. Real comic fans know."

I don't completely agree with the second half of their statement, but I get the feeling underneath!

Breaking Hal Jordan has been the character's whole modern story. Emerald Twilight turned him into Parallax and DC spent a decade living with it before Geoff Johns brought him back in Green Lantern: Rebirth by revealing Parallax had been a fear entity possessing him all along. Even the comics' fix was to say he never really fell. Either way, the character's modern story is a comeback after being broken.

As a rumor, it means the industry is reading this show as a win. And if that's true, DC is going all in while their most famous Lantern is at his lowest point on screen. Is that because they're confident, or are they making a mistake? I'm leaning towards confidence.

The show has been more careful than the weekly reaction gives it credit for. Episode 6's teaser has John investigating the death and the story leaving the 2016 timeline behind, so the Hal we've been judging thus far is the version from 2016. That's assuming that the teaser isn't pulling the wool over our eyes.

A story that goes back in time and shows you how somebody became broken is usually building towards something big, like showing not only how they get fixed, but how they were improved.

If the season ends with Hal still broken and no gesture toward a recovery, then the complaints in our comments turn out to have been early rather than wrong, and DC will have spent its first big Lantern outing in fifteen years with its most famous Lantern a pale showdown of what he could have been.

Lanterns is the only reason anyone is even talking about another Green Lantern movie. Whatever it has done to Hal in the short term, it made this corner of the DC Universe viable again after 2011's Green Lantern sent the property into a decade of false starts, with a Corps movie and a whole HBO Max series developed and dropped before this one made it to air. Aaron Pierre's John Stewart has carried a lot of it. DC gave the show over to him and made Hal the complication, and apparently that's the version of the property a new movie is being built upon.

If Hal walks out of this season damaged but standing, and a movie really does pick him up from there, do the last five episodes change anything for you? Which Lantern are you a fan of, Hal or John?

Sound off in the comments below!

I'm surprised at how much I like Lanterns! I really liked Kyle Chandler in Friday Night Lights, but I've LOVE him as Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre's John Stewart is growing on me...

@NateBest - Hal is a more outwardly fun character from the start since he can be funny and charismatic hence why people might respond to him more then John who is more reserved and stoic (though ep 4 showed some nice sides to his personality imo) so it makes sense that people would respond to the former more then the latter.

@NateBest - if it were an Elseworld comic book, I'd praise it's inventiveness and creativity. But as a main universe take on the Green Lanterns, it's pretty trash.

Everything has its place and context. Taking a massive shit can feel amazing, but if it's during church while sitting at the pews beside your family, friends and God himself.... Suddenly that amazing massive shit isn't so amazing anymore, in fact it's pretty traumatic.

Kinda same same for this show.

I don't understand these Hal Jordan fans getting their panties in a bunch over the show. The show has actually NOT shown Hal doing anything that is egregious. He is reckless sure but not a bad person. He did not know the car would burst into flames. In fact he goes goes back to the car to check on. John and the car had not caught fire. As far as the people in Rushville getting killed. These people signed up to be soldiers for a fugitive. If they die they knew the day was coming and they were resigned to their fate. So I am not sure what he was supposed to do. How he treats John and his family is disrespectful and the show reveals a latent respect he develops for John. People are mistaking realistic and understandable humanistic responses to situations with character flaws. Hal is reckless arrogant person and yet still a superhero

@Forthas - to add to that, when Rushville is fired upon, Hal does his best to defend civilians.

@Slotherin - And to add to that It was Zoe attacking her protectors and also Anton and his alien hit squad were going to attack anyway...Hal actually got them to defend themselves instead of being hit by a surprise attack.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - he just found out John was going to take the ring by force, the same ring he has broken the oath for, doing everything to keep it. I think it was a reasonable reaction given the circumstances at that point

Chandler has that classic hero quality that fits Hal perfectly and being older now he really nails the grey hair on the temples Hal I knew as a boy. He's the 70s - 90s Hal not the Geoff Johns iteration

Hal has always been a deeply flawed individual -- that's what makes him human & that's what makes him a great character. He's not Steve Rogers or Clark Kent. More often than not, watching stories about perfect people is boring because perfect people don't exist. Seeing a mess of a person, riddled with mistakes & contradictions, that's NOT character assassination -- it's a story any of us can relate to. Writers who make a character their own worst enemy have done their job, giving those characters the biggest challenge possible, so we can all watch them overcome it to change themselves & the world. Hats off to the Lanterns writing team. Even super-stoic John Stewart is full of surprises on this show. This is master level craft we're getting, and a lot of dumb-butts here are just way too up their own to know how impossible that is to pull off.

@seakhan - i agree…

Hell even Clark & Steve have their flaws since their intentions might be right at times but not their methods or their idealism can be manipulated etc.

There is no such thing as a perfect character nor should be there

While this Hal is more cynical , jaded and can be a jerk then his comic iteration , it’s been shown that he’s not a bad guy since you seen him trying to help the citizens of Rushville last episode so there’s a hero still in there even if he is broken due to Sinestro’s betrayal and loss of trust in the Guardians seemingly aswell as not wanting to give up the ring since it’s the only thing he has.

I do think Hal will be redeemed or atleast we’ll understand him more as will John given we know are getting flashbacks to his childhood so fingers crossed…

However , I’m still holding out some hope that Hal is alive though even if we don’t see him much if at all moving forward since I would like him & John to have atleast some measure of respect for each other by the end given how fraught & tense their dynamic has been from the beginning but we’ll see!!.

lazlodaytona - 9/19/2026, 9:38 PM
I don't understand why people thought Hal died. When a Lantern really dies, the ring itself goes and chooses a replacement. You can't just "take it" from a GL. Thus, also proving that blonde chick (Laura Linney) isn't a guardian (plus, Guardians don't shape-shift, wouldn't spend a considerable amount of time on earth, and wouldn't encourage someone to try and take the GL ring)

This show, tho lacking in constructs, is downright awesome. I really hope they don't do a movie and instead do a 2nd season. GL can show up in a Superman or JL movie, he just can't hold his own movie for 2 hrs. In season form you can map out a lot more story with the GL's rich mythology.
