THE FLASH Season 9 Set Photos Reveal [SPOILER]'s Return - With An Unexpected Twist

New photos from the set of The Flash season 9 have revealed a closer look at a certain character's return, though they aren't coming back in quite the way we expected. Check them out after the jump...

We've known for a while now that Rick Cosnett will return as Eddie Thawne in The Flash's upcoming ninth and final season, but some newly surfaced set photos shed more light on that.

The actor was spotted shooting scenes for the upcoming eleventh episode, with Eddie shown digging up his own grave! Taking a closer look at his surroundings, we see another headstone dated 2043, so this scene clearly takes place in the future rather than during a flashback or the present day.

Common sense says time travel is involved, and while his season 1 counterpart likely remains dead, Reverse-Flash has probably found a way to bring his ancestor back. Remember, Eddie made the ultimate sacrifice in order to wipe Eobard Thawne out of existence, so he could be pivotal in ensuring the villain can return to fight another day.

There was a time fans expected Eddie to become Reverse-Flash, and having him don the costume would be undeniably satisfying.

We also can't discount the possibility that season 9 of The Flash will see the fallen cop become Cobalt Blue, one of Barry Allen's comic book foes. It would be a wasted opportunity for the show not to do something big with the character, anyway.

"Barry (Grant Gustin) feels guilty for what happened to Caitlin and Mark (Jon Cor) comes up with a plan which makes everyone skeptical," reads the synopsis for this week's episode. "Meanwhile, Red Death looms in Central City and commands that failure is not an option. Joe (Jesse L. Martin) asks Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) to make a choice which leads Cecile to think about the greater good.

"Allegra (Kayla Compton) and Chester (Brandon McKnight) take a step in a new direction. Lastly, old friends pay an unexpected visit to S.T.A.R. Labs."

Take a closer look at Cosnett's return as Eddie below.

Making Eddie Cobalt Blue is far more interesting than it being Barry's brother that was stolen shortly after birth. Really don't like that origin.

If they could trim this show down to just the Flash and less team drama I’d probably watch it again.

@slickrickdesigns - That's funny, I was thinking the exact same thing while reading this article. I dropped the show awhile ago cause it was no longer a show about the Flash it was all about whatever his wife was up to and/or wanted and focused on the uninteresting side characters as if they were the stars of the show. I just wanted fun and interesting Flash stories but it became the Team Flash show not a Flash show.

@WarMonkey - So you basically wanted a show that purely resolves around The Flash with no friends, no family, no allies, etc. Seems very boring to me. It was a Team Flash show from the very start keep that in mind.

@slickrickdesigns - The show is ending after it's 9th season. So there's no point in watching it again if you purely want it to revolve around The Flash which wasn't a realistic idea, to begin with.

I'm just wondering if Grant Gustin's Flash disappearance has anything to do with The Flash movie, since he visits all these DC superheroes from different worlds.

Does he try and help Ezra's Flash fix things, which causes another paradox and The Flash isn't Ezra anymore.

Too much soapy sappy angsty drama. Way too many speedsters.

Thank goodness it's circling the drain.

Those BTS pics rocked the fandom into huge hype a couple of weeks ago. If they don't do Cobalt Blue it'd be a very wasted opportunity so hopefully it won't be the case.

Then again these kind of pictures would've been best avoided from leaking, some degree of the impact of seeing the scene now could be lessened when it happens.

I hope that Cobalt Blue!Eddie has this look from the Future State banner.
