We've known for a while now that Rick Cosnett will return as Eddie Thawne in The Flash's upcoming ninth and final season, but some newly surfaced set photos shed more light on that.
The actor was spotted shooting scenes for the upcoming eleventh episode, with Eddie shown digging up his own grave! Taking a closer look at his surroundings, we see another headstone dated 2043, so this scene clearly takes place in the future rather than during a flashback or the present day.
Common sense says time travel is involved, and while his season 1 counterpart likely remains dead, Reverse-Flash has probably found a way to bring his ancestor back. Remember, Eddie made the ultimate sacrifice in order to wipe Eobard Thawne out of existence, so he could be pivotal in ensuring the villain can return to fight another day.
There was a time fans expected Eddie to become Reverse-Flash, and having him don the costume would be undeniably satisfying.
We also can't discount the possibility that season 9 of The Flash will see the fallen cop become Cobalt Blue, one of Barry Allen's comic book foes. It would be a wasted opportunity for the show not to do something big with the character, anyway.
"Barry (Grant Gustin) feels guilty for what happened to Caitlin and Mark (Jon Cor) comes up with a plan which makes everyone skeptical," reads the synopsis for this week's episode. "Meanwhile, Red Death looms in Central City and commands that failure is not an option. Joe (Jesse L. Martin) asks Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) to make a choice which leads Cecile to think about the greater good.
"Allegra (Kayla Compton) and Chester (Brandon McKnight) take a step in a new direction. Lastly, old friends pay an unexpected visit to S.T.A.R. Labs."
