Tom Cavanagh has been a constant in The Flash since day one, but when his time as Eobard Thawne came to an end, The CW series started finding other ways to include the actor in the series.
That meant introducing versions of Dr. Harrison Wells from different worlds, but as time passed, the concept started wearing thin, so no one was overly surprised when Cavanagh announced his departure from the long-running show. However, during a recent chat with TV Line, the actor hinted that there could already be plans in place for him to return as Reverse-Flash in the final season.
"I’m not saying that this is going to happen, but [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] and I always felt that when Grant [Gustin] decides to depart the show, it’d be hard to imagine a scenario other than ‘Batman comes home to Joker,’ and Flash and Reverse Flash settle things," Cavanagh teased. "It’d be hard to imagine a different storyline — and that’s all I’m going to say right now."
It certainly sounds like there's an endgame in mind for The Flash, and seeing as no other big bad has ever really come close to what this villainous speedster brought to the table, using Reverse-Flash again makes perfect sense. Matt Letscher did a great job as Eobard, but Cavanagh is the definitive version of the character in the minds of the vast majority of fans.
With no word on when The Flash will end, it's hard to say when Cavanagh might reprise the role, but this is one rematch we're definitely excited to see play out given their storied history on screen.
