THE FLASH: Tom Cavanagh Teases Final Season Return As Reverse-Flash To End Barry Allen's Story

We don't know when The CW plans to end The Flash, but prior to his departure from The CW series, Tom Cavanagh has hinted that he'll eventually return as Reverse-Flash to conclude Barry Allen's story...

Tom Cavanagh has been a constant in The Flash since day one, but when his time as Eobard Thawne came to an end, The CW series started finding other ways to include the actor in the series.

That meant introducing versions of Dr. Harrison Wells from different worlds, but as time passed, the concept started wearing thin, so no one was overly surprised when Cavanagh announced his departure from the long-running show. However, during a recent chat with TV Line, the actor hinted that there could already be plans in place for him to return as Reverse-Flash in the final season.

"I’m not saying that this is going to happen, but [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] and I always felt that when Grant [Gustin] decides to depart the show, it’d be hard to imagine a scenario other than ‘Batman comes home to Joker,’ and Flash and Reverse Flash settle things," Cavanagh teased. "It’d be hard to imagine a different storyline — and that’s all I’m going to say right now."

It certainly sounds like there's an endgame in mind for The Flash, and seeing as no other big bad has ever really come close to what this villainous speedster brought to the table, using Reverse-Flash again makes perfect sense. Matt Letscher did a great job as Eobard, but Cavanagh is the definitive version of the character in the minds of the vast majority of fans.

With no word on when The Flash will end, it's hard to say when Cavanagh might reprise the role, but this is one rematch we're definitely excited to see play out given their storied history on screen.

I hope its more than a brief moment in the finale like what happened with Lex in Smallville.

@Himura - difference being that Cavanagh seems to want to actually return while Michael Rosenbaum had to be convinced with a fat chunk of money to even do that one scene

Tom's assessment makes some sense so I wouldn't doubt that things end up that way when its time to close up shop on the show.

Question is when will this happen? I can easily see this show get to a tenth season, and maybe even go beyond that

@bkmeijer - damn no, its starting to show signs of fatigue already and its latest storyline is based on a comic story from the last couple of years...sort of running out of momentum, an eighth and final season with the Rogues and Reverse Flash would give it a great ending

Does anyone here really like The Flash? I liked season one (way too many episodes though but solid). And I watched some of season 2 but I just weren’t feeling it, never watched it again..

I'm generally of the mind-set that every network contractually obligates itself to produce at least 6 "final" episodes when comissioning a new series. Guranteeing a non-cliffhanger ending for a series and thus pushing the series worth at the streaming market.

You have one last chance to pull this off CW. Make it happen.

@soberchimera - yeah, wont be perfect but Chillblain would be a good stand in for Captain Cold. Bring back Weather Wizard and Trickster (either version would be fine), Pied Piper. Would need to introduce a stand in for Heatwave and Abra kadabra. Unless there is a massive change for characters, no chance of Mirror Master

@dracula - They could probably get Wentworth back for a few episodes same for Purcell and the chick who played Golden Glider. I stopped watching after S2, but if any of them are dead just have them be from the past, alternate reality, etc.

I stopped watching during the beginning of season 4. It got really bad for me. Is it worth picking it back up for the most recent episodes?

I’ll miss the glory days of the flash but the series needs to end. It’s straight up trash now. They got screwed not having a good budget like Superman and Lois. I love the cast though and frankly they deserve better. Hope Tom returns for what really should be the final season.

They still haven't explained why Thawne looks like Harrison Wells again.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - They did, he saved himself from being erased after Eddie killed himself by using the negative speed force. So the Thawnes that look like him is from after season 1

@grif - Well isnt that most final seasons? Arrow's story was pretty much wrapped up in season 7. Season 8 was just to build up to Crisis

I tell you this.... for me, during the first season, I was hoping that they use Wells for a different character other than Professor Zoom And he ended up as Max Mercury. That way Tom would've ended up throughout the series as that character serving as part of the Flash family and as Barry's mentor instead of various versions of Wells from the multiverse.

😒 But..... 😏.... What can you say, nothing you can do, for me it was a missed opportunity.

@2013venjix - Season 8 really should introduce Max.
