Despite being one of the most acclaimed comic book series in history, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has long struggled to make the jump from page to screen, with notable names like Joseph Gordon-Levitt failing to adapt the property.

However, after years of failed projects, Netflix has just signed a deal with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the beloved comic book into a live-action TV show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg will act as showrunner on the Sandman series, while author Neil Gaiman and David Goyer (The Dark Knight) serve as executive producers.

Furthermore, per the site’s sources, the deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. has been described “as a massive financial commitment” and will make Sandman the “most expensive TV series” produced by DC Entertainment.

Now, what do you folks think of this news? Are you excited to see Gaiman's comic brought to life on the small screen? To share your thoughts, leave a comment below.

The GOAT comic book show has arrived y’all. Sorry everyone. Pack it up. Time to go home. Sandman is Vince Carter in the 2000 dunk contest. The MCU Disney+ shows & the CWverse & DC Universe shows are what Vince’s competition was

Nobodies who you don’t remember

Have a good day WandaVision, Falcon & Winter Soldier, Loki, & any other MCU show I missed. You gone. CWverse, don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Watchmen, you don’t even exist to me. DC Universe, Legion, & Marvel Netflix, you’ve already been canceled. Krypton, you can stay. I like you. I don’t know how you did Brainiac in live action but you pulled it off & I appreciate that. Agents of Shield, bahahahahahahahahahahahaha

@LEVITIKUZ - HBO's Watchmen has the show-runner of one of the best shows of the last decade though...

The smartest thing DC could have done was adapt it for TV as opposed to a movie; Gaiman's run wouldn't work as a two hour experience at all. Getting Gaiman involved is just icing on the cake, and it sounds like they're really going for the fences with that huge budget ($100m+?). Heinberg's work on Wonder Woman was great, but I was hoping for a more seasoned show-runner for something of this scale.
Super excited for this. Prestige TV should be the way to go for DC on the small-screen between this & Watchmen from HBO.

DC Netflix to replace Marvel Netflix?

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Well Lucifer is ending after season 5, but yeah, if Netflix wants more DC shows, that be great, maybe see if they want Swamp Thing

I wonder what sickly-looking British boy they'll get for Dream/Morpheus

There's the obvious pick of Tom Hiddleston, he can certainly look both sleep deprived & emaciated when he wants to:

He even got approval from the man himself, as Gaiman said in 2014:
"Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off."
Then, of course, we have former Sandman actor Joseph Gordon Levitt, who certainly has the passion for the character. Maybe with some (surely unhealthy) weight loss and a British accent, he could pull it off

@tmp3 - JGL seeing this after having a Sandman film in development hell for years

@BlackBeltJones - JGL left the project since he felt it would compromise Gaiman's vision:
“A few months ago, I came to realize that the folks at New Line and I just don’t see eye to eye on what makes Sandman special, and what a film adaptation could/should be. So unfortunately, I decided to remove myself from the project. I wish nothing but the best for the team moving forward.”

Also... just realized, Hiddleston is doing that Loki show. So his schedule won't be able to line up :/

Another poorly done Gaiman translation to go with Good Omens?

Sandman is one of the best comic book series ever, and I have zero faith any adaptation, even with Gaimen's involvement, will due the original books justice.

@Saga - I think Doom Patrol is fine, considering the schedule this week came out for all the DC shows across DC Universe, Epix and The CW and Doom Patrol was among it having a panel of it's own. They could announce Season 2 there.
