Netflix has shared a new promo banner for its upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, and it gives us a first glimpse of a character who has been absent from all official marketing material up until this point.

The poster features most of the show's main players, including Dream, Death, Desire, Lucifer, Lucienne, Johanna Constantine, The Corinthian, Rose Walker, John Dee and Gilbert, and on the right, we have our first look at Despair.

Played by Donna Preston (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Apocalypse Wow), Desire's twin sister is a terrifying sight to behold in the comic. It looks like the character's appearance has been humanized somewhat here, but we expect her to retain her dark demeanor.

We recently learned that Warner Bros. Discovery would have a (smaller than usual) presence at San Diego Comic-Con next month, and while most of the studio's upcoming DC movies are not expected to be showcased to any significant degree, there is a Hall H panel planned for The Sandman. Some new footage is anticipated, and Collider's Steve Weintraub has heard that the first episode may even screen for those in attendance.

The Sandman is set to premiere on August 5. Check out the new banner below, along with the recently released trailer, and let us know what you think.

"There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way."

The Sandman also stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Charles Dance as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Asim Chaudhry and Sanjeeve Bhaskar as Abel and Cain. Desire will be played by Mason Alexander Park, while Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, and David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny.

The 10-episode first season of The Sandman will adapt the first two arcs of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes" and "The Dolls House."

@tmp3 - we’ll always have the books. it’s a shame. I don’t think Netflix was the right home too. They’re so 50/50 nowadays.

@TocharianMonk - even Gaiman's involvement? Atleast for me, that's atleast one reason not to worry

@WalterBlack - wassup Walt.

Here's a CBM.com cheat sheet:
1. Constant bickering about Josh, his articles and his (as of yet to be confirmed) alt account.
2. Constant bickering about anything related to Star Wars, DC and Marvel
3. Constant bickering about the state of the comment section
4. Constant bickering about the sister sister sites and the owner of them all, Nate
5. In recent times, an insane surge in troll and hate accounts.

But it's all fun and games, if you can look past all that.

I never read Sandman but I’d recognize him anywhere and that poster of him looks too clean. Am I wrong? Where’s the messy hair and his chest is usually exposed.

@micvalpro - He's wearing his "human" clothes which are that the Neil Gaiman standard outfit, black: shirt pants boots and coat. His exposed chest is in his normal outfit, a black cloak that's on fire at the bottom.

in other news;

This summer, Howard Stern is filming "Doctor Doom" for Marvel, question is:

is it a movie or a Disney+ series ?

I've never read Sandman, but a simple Google images search for "Sandman comic" absolutely bombards you with image after image of the most creative imagery and trippy art esthetic you're likely to ever find in comics.

This show is the exact opposite of that esthetic.

This. Show. Looks. Boring. As. Hell.

I will never understand the logic of desiring to adapt an IP, then purging it of all the unique elements that made it a hit.

@UGLYsonic - don’t say that, then the Uber apologist will slam you with every excuse, the biggest one being that Neil Gaiman is the author so he wouldn’t make bad decisions. What I find so funny in that regard is that although Gaiman is in on the process he ultimately cannot have final say in a producers decision. So no, of course Neil will defend it being they backed up a garbage truck of money to his back door. Look at JOSStice League, when that was first released nobody said anything disparaging against whedon but after some time the can of worms spilled out against what a major asshole whedon was

If you told me that those were the Endless, I’d laugh. They look like your average run of the mill soap opera characters.

Like how is this not creepy and scary and psychedelic. This is just lazy and reminds me almost of the Inhumans bs as far as character design. They drop the ball it seems on the dark and scarier side of these characters with this realistic take.

Why is it that when Neil Gaiman is directly involved in the tv and film adaptions of his characters the shows are such crap? This just looks foul, absolutely foul. Sandman has stars in his eyes, he should always have black where his eyes should be. He always looks distant and aloof, not freaking brooding and angsty. This show is gonna be terrible.
