THE SANDMAN Set Photo Gives Us Our First Look At Kirby Howell-Baptiste As Death

A brief video from the set of The Sandman recently found its way online, giving us our first proper look at star Tom Sturridge as the titular Lord of Dreams in his street clothes. Now, a new photo has revealed our first glimpse of Kirby Howell-Baptiste as his big sister, Death!

It's not the clearest image, but the Cruella actress does appear to be garbed in a similar outfit to her comic book counterpart, and seems to be wearing the character's signature pendant/sigil around her neck.

Death is arguably the character Sandman fans are most looking forward to seeing brought to life in live-action, so this first look is sure to stir up plenty of discussion.

Sturridge and Baptiste join Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Logan actor Boyd Holbrook as sadistic escaped nightmare The Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong (The Witches) as The Dreaming's loyal custodian Lucienne, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Asim Chaudhry (Black Mirror) and Sanjeeve Bhaskar (Yesterday) as Abel and Cain, respectively.

We recently learned that Desire and Despair will be played by Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston, respectively, while Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, and David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny. Jenna Coleman will play John Constantine's great-great-great grandmother, Lady Johanna Constantine.

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes," which finds Dream captured by a black magician and held prisoner for the better part of a century. When he finally escapes, he sets about recovering three very important items, encountering Lucifer, John Constantine, Doctor Destiny, Martian Manhunter and more on his travels.

Gaiman is developing the show along with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. No premiere date has been set.

Wonder if we can expect Constantine in this show, maybe tie it into the upcoming HBOMax Constantine tv series

How dare they cast someone with flesh, muscles, and tendons as Death?

@soberchimera - probably a no on Constantine, considering he has a show in the works and this show cast an ancestor of his.

On Constantine, man Legends Of Tomorrow should get Sting to appear or have Matt Ryan play Sting for an episode

@dracula - That's a great idea! Maybe have Sting play an older John Constantine from the future or one of his ancestors in the past.

@GwenLantern - Yeah that would be great.

Although yeah would be hilarious to have Matt Ryan play Constantine and Sting in an episode

@dracula - Like actually play Sting? On stage? That would be brilliant. I need that. lol.

@GwenLantern - Have them go back to the 80's a meet Sting played by Matt Ryan. Yeah that would be great.

For the american idol episode, enjoyed the song they sang, but would have been cool if they sang something by The Police.

If they can ever get Sting to actually appear on the show, it would for sure need to be Matt Ryan's final episode (if he leaves), either old man constantine or maybe have him play Constantine's father

being goth is the only thing that matters on death's appearance

I hope she has the eye make up thingy at least at some point. That feels like the signature part of the characters look.

She looks absolutely nothing like the source material but then again I only read a few random issues of the comic back in the 90s so this doesn’t bother me that much. Hopefully the show is good and grabs my attention more then the comic did. 🤷‍♂️🤞

I really don't get the lovable goth character of Death from these pictures, but maybe in motion it will be better.

So I reserve judgement until the show comes out.

Best of luck to her, because the character of Death has a huge following and unfortunately people will roast her if she doesn't do a good job.

I need to see more, and I think I'll be fine with the casting choices when we get the real thing.

For now I can't fully help myself not to think "cosplay". She with a good Death outfit, and he a decent young Neil Gaiman.

You know what, I'm just gonna say it: I think this is good casting. If done well, it can create this uneasiness between what you expect from the character Death and someone that looks totally unlike that character (she looks kind, whereas I expect Death to be the opposite)
