A film adaptation for the Vertigo comic book series Y: The Last Man has been in development for some years. Back in 2007, D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four) was attached to direct, with his Disturbia star Shia LaBeouf also being linked to the movie. However, due to disagreements between Caruso and New Line Cinema (who were developing the project), the director eventually walked out. Since then, The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier expressed interest in adapting the series for television. In March, Jericho scribes Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia were hired to pen the latest draft for the movie, reigniting hope among fans who were wanting to see Y: The Last Man come to the big screen.

And now, Vulture has more good news for the project. According to the site's sources, Y: The Last Man is now one of New Line's first priorities. They are reportedly very pleased with Federman/Scaia's script, and have begun the process of meeting with potential directors for the movie.

For those who aren't familiar with the series, Y: The Last Man follows young amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his male Capuchin monkey Ampersand, who are the only living mammals with a Y chromosome left alive on Earth after a plague wipes out. Written by Brian K. Vaughn and penciled by Pia Guerra, the series ran for 60 issues under DC Comics' Vertigo print.

Y: The Last Man is one of the greatest comics ever, but I'm skeptical... If they're gonna do it, it'll have to be a trilogy. They cannot fit everything in one film!

It should be a tv series. It's the kind of show I could imagine HBO would want.

Its gonna be a totally different beast if it's adapted as a movie.. It could be ok, the series got a little slow in the middle. But Hollywood being what it is....not hopeful!

Frankly I'm surprised BKV agreed to this; he seems like a sensible guy

Too long and complex for one movie. I agree that a TV series would be best.

Shia and Pettyfer are both assholes. They don't deserve a project like this. Anton Yelchin all the way.

@soberchimera61 That's a really good choice! I totally forgot about Mr. Yelchin. He'd be perfect for the role!

Sweet! I've been thinking this would make for a good movie for a long time. I'm just glad they held off long enough for Shia LaBeouf to drop out of the project...

they could have a director, finished script, and a primary cast signed...& i still won't believe anything on this one until cameras roll.

sorry, its just that i fell hook line & sinker for this back with the caruso & shia news AND have been cock teased with every other bullshit breaking news since.

for me it's like cowboy bebop, akira and several others that will just never be. The Dark Tower is moving right up there as well.

Like many have stated, Y: The Last Man is perfect for a TV series. Make it "each season is a book" or something like that.
