WILLOW And Y: THE LAST MAN Among The TV Shows And Movies Being Removed From Disney+ Later This Month

There are a lot of very unhappy creatives and fans today as Disney+ has released a list of more than four dozen movies and TV shows that will be pulled from the streaming service as soon as next week...

During Disney+'s recent Upfront presentation earlier this week, it was revealed that the streamer is in the process of "reviewing the content on our DTC [direct-to-consumer] services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation."

You might need to have a business degree on hand to understand that, but the gist is that the company has decided to remove content from Disney+ starting May 26 in order to save money.

The company will take a write-down in the June quarter of $1.5 billion - $1.8 billion by removing content from its streaming platforms. From there, Disney can exclude the value of this content from its balance sheet, preventing it from being reported as an expense in subsequent reporting periods.

Presumably, Disney will consider offloading some of these movies and TV shows to other streamers, but they'll soon be gone and unavailable to watch legally.

The biggest shock is Willow, a small screen follow-up to the cult classic movie which was cancelled after one season amid poor reviews (the door was said to be open to more episodes being released down the line, though that's now been slammed shut).

As you can see below (via SFFGazette.com), one of the show's writers, John Bickerstaff, is very upset with the news. So too is Y: The Last Man's showrunner as that short-lived Hulu series is also set to be taken down later this month.

You can read the full list of shows about to be pulled from Disney+ and Hulu below.

Effectively they realized a majority of their content was absolute garbage so they decided to remove it rather than risk damaging people's impression of their brand.

@Scarilian - which will further dilute the brand that is already massively starved for new content

@Scarilian - That’s part of it, but the business metrics play in too. If they can license these shows to other providers, they can make more money. I’m not sure about the business loss stuff they mentioned, but if they can get write offs for losses, than can help their bottom line too.

@Scarilian - Disney threw a lot of shit at the wall to see if it would stick...but it looks like the place just started to pile up and stink!!!!!

@Scarilian - I understand most of these were just garbage but that still doesn't change the fact that every single month when you PAY a "sub" fee, it's never guaranteed that you will be able to view all of the content all the time.

Over a year, at $10/Month, that's $120 you are basically throwing it into the nether. Unless you buy physical media that you can keep it forever, as soon as you stop your "sub", you are left with nothing to watch and short of those $120 over a year.

And then of course they can decide to just pull movies/shows off at their whim and all you can do is, stop your sub. You will still be left with nothing to view and lost all the money you spent upto that month.

Streaming Services subscription is the best/worst trick the devil ever pulled!

@Scarilian - They're not doing it because of the risk of damaging people's impression of their brand. They're doing it because Disney Plus has lost 4 millions subscribers and they need to cut costs (continuing hosting these shows on their streaming plateform also has a cost).

This is why streamers should always offer their titles to be purchased a la carte on other platforms. HBO Max does after the season ends and Prime Video does the last season around the time the new one comes out. They’ll never do it bc they think it retains subs but i really wish Disney+ would do the same thing. If anything they’d make more money on double dippers like me, hell I’d buy every Marvel and Star Wars show out there to have a full collection

@Ha1frican - most only half thought out this streaming thing they’ll get there at some point

@Ha1frican -
They spent a lot of money on shows that are not successful. They are basically taking a write off on the production costs. The fact that they weren't popular means that they won't be missed by many. What all the creatives and everyone involved had was an opportunity. And they got paid.

@Goldboink - Just because a show isn’t successful doesn’t mean it isn’t good. How many shows find life well after their initial air date. I’m not saying not hosting them doesn’t make sense, it does. But to effectively delete them is also dumb. Let people buy them and you’ll make some more money back. They wouldn’t be responsible for the hosting since you’d be streaming off of Apple TV/Prime Video/Vudu/Google Play/YouTube, there’s no distribution cost with digital, they’d make money they otherwise wouldn’t, and fans can have access to the content. There’s literally no downside.

@Ha1frican -
There's actually a huge downside and that is the $1.5 billion in write offs that they are taking. Not a chance that these properties would generate that much revenue in their lifetimes. Plenty of crappy TV shows have been made to never again see the light of day. Crappy movies too. Everyone who worked on them got paid.

It's good that Y: The Last Man got cancelled, today's generation of overly sensitive "men" who scream "w0Ke" at anything that offends them would love their shit over the concept of this series

@KaptainKhaos - They are currently focusing on boycotting Miller Lite next because a commercial involved women.

@KaptainKhaos - Let's call it like it is. Y The Last Man had a season that fizzled out like a weak fart in the wind. Because it sucked. And there was no giant eruption of people crying wokeness. Because most people knew it was a comic and they liked it. But the show was bad. So that's why it's a good thing it's cancelled

@SonOfAGif - I don’t see it as any different than the liberal people that boycotted Chick-Fil-A or Hobby Lobby. People choosing to not do business with a company is their decision not anyone else’s.
