Deadline reports that Bless Me and Ultima actor Miguel Gomez has joined the cast of The Strain as 'Augustin "Gus" Elizalde'. They describe the character as, "a badass gang-banger whose one redeeming trait is his love for his mother. Fresh out of juvenile hall after serving eighteen months for manslaughter, he becomes one of humanity’s most effective warriors in the struggle against the vampires." The series has a pilot order (which will be helmed by the Pacific Rim director) but is being eyed for a full 13-episode pickup according to various outlets.

These vampires are nothing like any vampires seen on film before. The books the series is based on were great.

The description given here for the character this guy will be playing does not do him justice. He's a great character.

This is NOT Twilight nor Buffy. This guy "Gus" is not some teeny bopper. His character is a tough ass Mexican gang banger from the streets. This series cannot be compared to any other vampire series other than Blade II. The vamps in this novel were supposed to be in Blade 2 but there wasn't enough room so GDT created The Strain so that way he could use them. This is unlike any vampire story ever. The vamps are treated more as a virus outbreak rather than something supernatural.

Douchetastic had clearly never read the book. Probably hasn't read any book since Green Eggs & Ham.

McGee, on the other hand, I like your style.

Oh and Guillermo del Toro created this series, asshat. Why wouldn't he put his name on it?

The strain is a great trilogy, but I wouldn't go so far as to say there's been no vampire stories like it before. I'd say there was a pretty heavy "Salem's Lot" influence going on here. Certainly not a ripoff, but definitely an influence. I sincerely hope they are aiming to compete with "The Walking Dead" in terms of tone. I hope it's as brutal and dark as the books. Del Toro has earned my faith. Looking forward to it.
