SHŌGUN: Death Is In The Air In Badass Official Trailer For FX's Hiroyuki Sanada-Fronted Miniseries

After several years of development, FX has finally debuted the first official trailer for their upcoming period drama Shōgun, which is a live-action adaptation of the 1975 James Clavell novel of the same name that promises to tell the tale of two ambitious men who happen to cross paths at a pivotal time in their lives as mayhem ensues around them.

While we'd advise reading the novel if you're interested in learning more about the mysterious plot, the synopsis reveals that the ten-episode limited series will be "set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village."

Shōgun has been in the works since 2018, so it's certainly a welcome sight to finally see the trailer. In addition to starring in the lead role, Hiroyuki Sanada, who is best known for his roles in The Last SamuraiAvengers: Endgame, and John Wick: Chapter 4, also served as one of the producers on the project, so this should hopefully be an exceptional showcase for the storied action star.

The massive ensemble cast features Cosmo Jarvis as Pilot Major John Blackthorne, Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshi Toranaga, Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabu, Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba No Kata (Lady Ochiba), Tokuma Nishioka as Toda Hiromatsu, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Ako as Daiyoin Lady Iyo, Shinnosuke Abe as Toda Buntaro, Yasunari Takeshima as Mura, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, Toshi Toda as Sugiyama, Hiro Kanagawa as Igurashi, Junichi Tajiri as Uejiro, Néstor Carbonell as Vasco Rodrigues, Yuki Kura as Yoshi Nagakado, Tommy Bastow as Father Martin Alvito, Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji, Yoriko Dōguchi as Kiri No Kata, Yuka Kouri as Kiku, Yuki Kedoin as Takemaru, and Mako Fujimoto as Shizu No Kata.

Jonathan van Tulleken directed the first two episodes, with Charlotte Brändström helming episode three. It's also been confirmed that Hiromi Kamata directed episode six and Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour directed episode eight. Takeshi Fukunaga also helmed an episode, but his episode number hasn't been revealed.

Shōgun premieres in February 2024!

Watch the official trailer below:

Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

No disrespect but Sanada was too old and too short to be Scorpion.

Looking forward to Shogun but I'd really like to see Hiroyuki Sanada as Lone Wolf and Cub!

@kirbyfan - I don't log in to comment but this comment deserves more attention. Tbh though his age would lean more Yagyu leader than Itto.

It’s nice to see Hiroyuki Sanada in a lead role of an American project like this!!.

Seriously why can white males play samurais but black women can't be mermaids?

@prettynucIear - honestly, I'm bothered by it. Same with Blue Eye Samurai. Looks cool, but I wonder why the lead has to be Western

@bkmeijer1 - @prettynucIear

You guys could at least do a google search on the book and its storyline.
prettynucIear
prettynucIear - 11/2/2023, 6:41 PM
@Fogs - there are millions of samurai. they picked the one that "panders" to a certain audience, same with last samurai.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/2/2023, 8:54 PM
@prettynucIear - No one said mermaids can't be black. Where are you getting that from? People were upset because Ariel specifically, the main character of The Little Mermaid, ISN'T BLACK. She's always been a white redheaded girl.

The Last Samurai had a story about an original character. He wasn't born samurai. He was captured by them, earned their respect, and trained in their ways. If it was a true story about a Japanese Samurai and they race swapped that guy to be a white dude, then everyone would be mad about it too. Just like when people were pissed that Major Kusanagi was played by Scarlet Johansen in Ghost in the Shell.

Do you guys not see the pattern? Or do you just not understand the argument? There's a huge difference between creating an original character to be a certain race, and race swapping an existing character. People don't care when it's original characters. But when you race swap real people from history, or already established characters, it pisses people off. It's not that hard of a concept, man.

Yet somehow people still make weird arguments like people are somehow racists for wanting real people or existing characters to be represented appropriately.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/2/2023, 8:58 PM
@prettynucIear - And, after looking it up, The Last Samurai actually was about a real person from history. His name was Jules Brunet who was fascinated with Japanese culture and became a Samurai warrior himself.

@CorndogBurglar - In the Last Samurai, the white guy kills a real Japanese person, marries his wife and adopts his son. it's weeb fantasy of replacing Asian men.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/2/2023, 10:39 PM
@prettynucIear - Maybe. But it's still an original story. None of that happened in real life.

Do you not see the difference between that and what your original comment was claiming?

Or were you just purposefully trying to make people sound racist?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/3/2023, 3:07 AM
@TheVisionary25 @Fogs - yeah, I'm hyperboling it a little. But what I mean to say is, I rather see a Japanese lead in something that is obviously Japanese culture/history.
Fogs
Fogs - 11/3/2023, 3:46 AM
@prettynucIear - But here they're adapting Shogun. That's the story (since I'm posting the link at least have the work of reading the "plot" part):

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgun_(novel)

There are MANY samurai in this, Blackthorne is simply our western eyes looking into a completely different culture. He's not even a real fighting samurai, different than Tom Cruise (which was a forced point in a good movie, imo).

Also I suggest watching some Akira Kurosawa if you haven't. Go straight to the best.
Fogs
Fogs - 11/3/2023, 3:54 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Well then go watch japanese samurai films, friend. They're better at it anyway. I recommend Seven Samurai from '54.

It's not like they're creating it now (and even then did, it would be ok, just like @CornDogBurglar said and I agree).

Shogun is a 70's novel about feudal Japan, and it adapts a real story about a 17th century marooned european captain who falls in Tokugawa Ieyasu's grace as means to achieve power. There are a town and railway station called Miura Anjin after of him. Fascinating stuff.

bkmeijer1 - 11/3/2023, 4:04 AM
@Fogs - oh yeah, I do as well. And I like to be proven wrong, so I'll definitely watch both this Blue Eye Samurai.

Maybe afterwards I think that the captain could've been a secondary character, or that it works as is. With there being a book and a real-life story, there is precedence it could. But I remain cautious nonetheless.
Fogs
Fogs - 11/3/2023, 4:41 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Watch the 70's series and you'll not regret. It treats the japanese culture with immense respect. You'll probably want to read the book afterwards.

IMO it's 10x better than The Last Samurai.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/3/2023, 4:51 AM
@Fogs - yeah I knew there was another show, so I'll might just watch that. And if I like it, I might listen to an audiobook if I can find (not much of a reader due to a lack of time).

The Last Samurai though, we better not mention that
