Milly Alcock has been a major highlight of the first five episodes of House of the Dragon, but the 22-year-old actress' time in the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen came to an end at the conclusion of Sunday's episode, "We Light The Way."

The next instalment, "The Princess and the Queen," will begin after a 10-year time-jump, with Emma D'Arcy taking over as the conflicted princess and Olivia Cooke stepping into the role of the older Queen Alicent Hightower.

Now, Alcock (via SFFGazette.com) has taken to Instagram to bid farewell to the show, her character and her fans by sharing a batch of fun behind-the-scenes photos from her time filming the Game of Thrones prequel series.

The fact that Alcock and Emily Carey are both being replaced by (slightly) older actresses has come in for some backlash, especially as it wouldn't have been at all difficult to age them up accordingly. To be fair, HBO did a great job of making D'Arcy and Cooke look as much like their younger counterparts as possible, but it does seem like a slightly unnecessary change.

Nevertheless, we're sure Cooke and D'Arcy will do a fine job.

How do you guys feel about Alcock being replaced for the final four episodes? Drop us a comment down below.

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The show is set to premiere on August 21.

Alcock and Carey were cast to look like Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke, who are the more established actors and were cast first. They're both very good, and I have no doubt they'll do a great job with the rest of the series, but particularly Alcock was awesome.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Yeah, true. I am looking forward to seeing the other two in the roles, but Alcock and Carey were just so damn good, it's gonna take some getting used to.

@BestAtWhatIDo - If DC ever gets there stuff together I could see both in future DC projects. Carey for instance would be a good Miss Martian,Zatanna ,or Poison Ivy
Milly as Ravager ,Lady Blackhawk,or Saturn Girl

Alcock was great as Rhaenyra and wished we got even more of her. Gonna miss her. Her star is definitely going to rise.

After seeing both Alcock and Carey in this I can honestly see them in a future MCU project.Milly Alcock for example would be a good young Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen
, Emma Frost,Sue Storm/Invisible Woman,
or Black Cat. Carey I can see as a young Jean Grey, Medusa,or SQUIRREL GIRL

I wonder if it has to do with the plans for the future scenes with Matt Smith and others. Even though the actresses (Alcock, for example) are older (22 for Alcock?), they've been sold - or just come off that way - as younger in the show. Wonder if they're trying to avoid putting off audiences that would cringe at the appearance of an actress that seems very young doing intimate scenes with a much older man (nearly 40 for Smith).

I find it interesting that the Seven Kingdoms went into war and turmoil at the idea of a Princess being named Heir. But if her brother, father, and uncle were killed in war she would instantly become Queen. I always found history quite odd with ignorant kingdoms and dynasties completely ignoring the possibilities of life. In their mind "There is no way this can happen!" And when it happens they allow their families and banners to crumble instead of embracing fate.

They should have let them continue instead of recasting. This reminds me to a little to what they did in Gotham's series finale by replacing Camren Bicondova as Selina with Lili Simmons yet the rest were allowed to reprise their roles one final time. It's dumb to do this when the audience already got invested with the cast.

She's fantastic. I hope the next actress can live up to the bar Milly set.

She's incredible in the show. Glad she got 5 episodes of great character work. She'll get a ton of great gigs from this.

It’s disappointing because I liked her character and don’t know that I wanna try to get invested in some new actor now
