The second season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, is scheduled to begin filming very soon, and Deadline has learned that the show's sophomore run will be slightly shorter than its first.

According to the trade (via SFFGazette.com), House of the Dragon season 2 will consist of eight episodes - two fewer than the critically-acclaimed debut season, which concluded last November.

This development comes amid recent belt-tightening measures at HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, although the decision to go with a shortened second season is believed to be more story-driven.

House of the Dragon’s creative team are said to be planning for the series to run for 3 or 4 seasons. Season 3 has been "mapped out and may be greenlighted with HBO seriously considering committing to moving ahead with scripts, casting and a production plan as the network too is trying to think long-term instead of season-to-season."

Apparently, "a portion of the plot originally intended for Season 2, including a major battle," is now being saved for season 3.

If we had to hazard a guess, this battle is likely the culmination of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons, which will see two major characters clash in a mid-air skirmish much like the last moments of the season 1 finale - but with a very different outcome.

If you haven't watched the first season of House of the Dragon yet, spoilers follow.

3-4 seasons sounds perfect for this series, they should not drag it out to long

@19Batman84 - a series number of seasons should be as long as the story has good compelling and relevant content that moves it forward. there should be no magic number that people keep throwing out. if someone has a story that takes 8 seasons to tell then do it as long as it doesn't meander and have filler everywhere. some stories could be fulfilled in two years. last of us is splitting the next game into two seasons because there is so much content to deal with. marvel should be more lenient on how many episodes are in seasons. some stories could be done in 6 while born again will take 18. i like the let the story dictate the length philosophy vs filling a corporate quota for streaming or television scheduling.

@supermanrex - Ive read the storyits pretty short so 3-4 seasons is perfect. the story is only 150 pages or so that is why i said it is a good length. i agree with what your said though

Dang, that's going to be a short season. And they havent even started filming yet? Those boys are going to be men by the 3rd season for sure.

Looking forward to seeing this back. Season 1 was much better than expected. The Dance of Dragons gets much crazier and I’m glad to see they are trying to plan long term. They have the entire story written so it won’t be as hard to stick the landing as Game of Thrones was.

@mountainman - thank you! Finally someone who understands this and doesn't cry about GoT. How the frick they would have known how it ends when martin wasn't involved. It was pure fanfic, even Martin said that lol. Also this is his baby and he's watching closely.

@RegularPoochie - I imagine there were certain things story wise that were similar to what the books (if ever finished) will depict. Dani turning evil and John declining the throne specifically seem like things that Martin would write.

Eight is good, I wish that LOTR show was 5 episodes... what a bore

@bobevanz - think Rings of Power had a right amount of episodes, just made each episode way too long. Could've kept things a whole lot more engaging by keeping things short and didn't take all the time dancing around things.

Honestly just delighted they have the entire show mapped out, unlike a certain adjacent dumpster fire

Really enjoyed season 1. I don’t mind shorter seasons so long as it doesn’t mess up the pacing like it did for seasons 7-8 of GoT.

Four seasons is often a good number of seasons to aim for in my opinion.

And good to know they know how it's gonna end and how long that is roughly gonna take them. Don't want another directionless mish mash of later seaons.

Also it's Dance of THE Dragons

the length between seasons will kill how much i retain from this show. i love it but ill be damned if its a chore in itself of trying to keep track who the [frick] who is and and they're relationship and family positions. that's on top of the heavy thick accents they have when they get emotional and start yelling. CC really helps with this show.

Yeah this isn’t a great article.

There is no “dance of the dragons” battle, as the title “The Dance of The Dragons” is what the entire war is called.

And that’s already started.

There’s not much filler in this story. There’s A LOT that happens.

What they’re actually probably referring to in the article is the battle known as “the battle above god’s eye”. I can see them saving that for season 3. And it is goddamn epic.

But there are about to be a lot of awesome battles and events that happen in this. Excited to see it come to life.
