The season finale of House of the Dragon aired last night, and the episode concluded with a tragic event that will ultimately set the stage for the brutal war between the "Greens" and the "Blacks" that came to be known as the Dance of the Dragons.

"The Black Queen" begins with Rhaenys arriving at Dragonstone to inform Princess Rhaenyra of her father's death and the usurping of her claim to the Iron Throne resulting in the coronation of her half-brother, Aegon. Daemon sees this as an act of war and urges immediate action, but when Otto Hightower arrives to offer Queen Alicent's (surprisingly fair) terms, Rhaenyra decides to consider the options available to her.

In an attempt to secure as many allies as possible, she agrees to allow her sons to fly out on dragon-back, with Lucerys making his way to Storm's End to treat with Lord Boros Baratheon. Unfortunately, Aemond Targaryen had beaten him to it, and he brought more favourable terms from his mother.

Aemond berates the lad, and demands that he remove one of his eyes in recompense for Luke blinding him when they were young. Boros puts a stop to it, and Luke makes a quick exit, commanding his steed, Arrax, to fly carefully in the raging storm.

The vengeful Aemond pursues his nephew, however, and when an agitated Arrax shoots fire at Vhagar, the much larger dragon tears Arrax - and his rider - to pieces.

Though Aemond clearly wanted to frighten Lucerys and may well have collected his "eye for an eye" if he got the opportunity, he did not actually mean to kill him, as we hear him implore Vhagar to stop right before he attacks. This marks a fairly significant change to George R.R. Martin's source material, which saw Aemond murder his nephew in cold blood.

Accident or not, it'll make little difference to Rhaenyra, who is informed of her beloved son's death in the episode's closing moments.

Good episode that sets up for the civil war in season 2. Gotta wait a whole year!!!

Overall was really happy with this season. This was a return to form for the Song of Ice and Fire series. The characters were engaging and interesting and the conflicts/political intrigue all well developed.

Can’t wait to see where it goes next.

@PoolParty - Sorry, we got two years to wait for that.

“This marks a fairly significant change to George R.R. Martin's source material, which saw Aemond murder his nephew in cold blood.”

Not sure that above statement is accurate.

Fire & Blood is told from a 3rd Party Perspective. That 3rd party whose words should not be taken for fact on the actual details of what occurred (in this fictional world).

@IronGenesis - Also there’s no other witnesses. So if Aemond just goes home and owns the whole thing, says he did it on purpose, then that’s what history will record.

@IronGenesis - what what what, I'm interested in your logic behind this post.

@SpideyQuad - Not OP, but basically Fire & Blood is not written as a novel like the core Ice and Fire books are. It’s written as an in universe history book written by a Grandmaester of the Citadel named Gyldayn. And being a maester he’s also pretty strongly biased towards the Greens, so not exactly the most reliable storyteller either. Nothing in the book is what “really” happened, it’s just what Gyldayn understands to have happened and wants people to believe happened.

@BloopBlorp2 - exactly. The same could be said about Leanors’ “death”. Everyone thinks he was murdered. Obviously the show changed it a bit

@BloopBlorp2 - okay, thanks I was not aware of this. I was totally confused :-)

I usually don't like big changes from original depictions that I felt invested in but I didn't read the book so I don't care. For those that did did you like that they made Aemond less of a murderer, hate it or not care?

@CplHicks - I don't think it made him less of a murderer but foreshadows something later. The fact that Vhagar didn't listen to Aemond and went for the kill kind of alludes to the possibility that Aemond will be killed because Vhagar will get into a battle they cannot win.

@CplHicks - I hesitate to call it a change, given the unreliable nature of the 3rd-Person Narrator of Fire and Blood.

But I think it works really well with the themes of how the Dance was a foolish and unnecessary tragedy brought on by Targaryen pride and hubris + dragons being a double-edged sword (like all magic in ASOIAF).

Incredible finale. Sucks we'll have to wait at least a year and a half to get more. But hopefully we'll start seeing casting for characters like Daeron, Cregan Stark and Black Aly soon.

Good first season. Definitely has me invested and I can’t wait for the next season unlike Rings Of Power that constantly bored and disappointed me, definitely not excited for more ROP.

loved the ep, it was a bit hard to watch with the first scenes but both parties are about to get worse.

I’m surprised this doesn’t mention Rhaenyra’s birth/miscarriage scene. That was the most shocking and disturbing part of the episode for me.

Great finale. GoT tended to wind things down in their finales (the 9th episode being the "big" one) so I'm glad this carried the momentum of ep 9 all the way though. The producers said 9 and 10 were more "sister episodes" and it really felt like that.

Cant wait for the Dance of Dragons to begin. I hope season 2 starts off in Winterfell.
