DAREDEVIL: Looks Like Matt Gerald Will Be Suiting Up As 'Gladiator' For Season 2

DAREDEVIL: Looks Like Matt Gerald Will Be Suiting Up As 'Gladiator' For Season 2

We already met mentally challenged mobster Melvin Potter (actor Matt Gerald) in season 1, but judging by a new teaser pic courtesy of the official Daredevil Twitter account, he'll be gearing up as the sawblade-wielding Gladiator next year...

It turned out that Melvin Potter was aiding the Kingpin under duress in the first season of Daredevil, and he wound up creating Matt Murdock's classic red costume when this was brought to light. Before that though, he proved himself a pretty formidable fighter, and it looks like we'll be seeing some more of that in season 2 - only this time Potter will have a suit of his own.

Daredevil season 2 will première sometime next year, and will feature Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle and Elodie Yung as Elektra.

I only just caught up on Daredevil so I missed all the threads about it, but did anyone else think the last episode or 2 flat-out sucked? Steven DeKnight isn't involved with Season 2 anymore, right? I hate to say it, but based on how he directed the last episode, good riddance.

@KurtWagner1225 I mean, he was the showrunner for the whole season after Goddard left, so it's not like he was completely terrible haha. It's just that when he started getting directly involved with specific episodes (i.e. writing and directing) rather than just overseeing the general arc of the season, there seemed to be a clear drop in quality IMO.

I actually enjoyed the Kingpin-centric episode, but with how rushed and un-subtle and lackluster the last few episodes ended up feeling to me, I can't help but think that DeKnight was part of the problem.

@KurtWagner1225 Just to explain where I'm coming from, the biggest thing that stands out to me was the absolute waste of Ben Urich in the 2nd-to-last episode (he actually was wasted in most of the entire season, actually). Not only was the actual death scene really underwhelming (Urich was dead the moment they revealed Kingpin in the room...no need to drag that scene out for as long as they did), but killing Urich that late in the season didn't make much sense at all.

And with the last episode, DeKnight completely dropped the crime-drama aspect of the show (which was one of its absolute strengths), in order to do pretty much every superhero cliche' in the book. The way that everything falls apart for Fisk felt so rushed. And the whole thing with him getting arrested, then escaping just so he could have the obligatory throwdown with Daredevil, only to get caught again was a big waste of time IMO. And even that final fight was just...boring. It didn't feel like a payoff to a season-long rivalry to me. It was just "Here's that big hero-vs-villain fight because that's how these things usually are supposed to be!" And even Fisk's speech about the Good Samaritan, though it was well-written, basically spells out that he's a villain now and it takes away every ounce of subtlety and nuance that he previously had.

I don't think it's necessarily that the last few episodes were objectively bad, it's just that the show raised the bar so high earlier in the season that it was disappointing for the season to end that way, IMO. The show started out as a new, fresh, interesting take on a part of the MCU we've never seen before. But to me, it wrapped things up as if it were a generic superhero show that played things too safe and didn't take any risks at all.

@KurtWagner1225 But what's interesting about Murdock and Fisk isn't whether the former can take down the latter in a street fight, though. It's their ideologies, their different mindsets on how to "save" their city. 95% of the first season understood that perfectly, but that last episode turned Fisk into an outright villain (instead of someone who's just convinced that they have to do dirty things for the greater good, like he was in every episode up to that point) and boiled down their entire conflict into "Who can knock out the other guy first?" And with his speech, he says that he used to think of himself as the Good Samaritan (which is how it should be), but now he realizes he's the guys who beat up the victim in the first place. That's what kind of messes up his entire arc, IMO.

I really liked Ben too, but so much of his storyline was wasted by killing him just when he was about to go into uncharted territory. After finally being convinced to run his meaningful Fisk story and after being fired from the newspaper company he hated, he should've been given the opportunity to actually go down that new road and open up brand new possibilities for his character. But instead, just when his story threatened to change and upset the status quo, the writers decided to kill him off. That's the definition of playing things safe.

We'll probably just have to agree to disagree here haha, but I just wanted to get others thoughts on that since I missed the earlier discussions. So I appreciate your thoughts!

@KurtWagner1225 It's all good! Despite what I thought was a disappointing ending, I really loved the rest of the season. With the castings for Punisher and Elektra, I honestly can't wait to see how Season 2 turns out. All the origin stuff is out of the way and Daredevil finally has his suit, so there's so many ways they could go next season.

Though one other small thing I wanted to see more of in Season 1 was courtroom scenes with Foggy and Matt just...being lawyers haha. We only got one awesome courtroom scene in ALL of Season 1, so that was kind of weird for a crime-drama series. I hope they find time to include more of those types of things next season.

@SauronsBANE Way to put into words my feelings nearly to a T about the end of season 1. There was a very obvious tonal shift from "well-written, interesting crime drama" to "superhero cheese x793" that totally took me out of the show.

I agree that Urich's death was disappointing, and I would add that I was hoping for a few other displays of DD's powers. I'll admit, I haven't read a lot of DD comics, but can't he read papers by feeling the ink on the page? Stuff like that, or when he drops the fire extinguisher on the guy is awesome, gimme more!

I'd have also liked to see a bit more of his origin, but I'm sure we'll get more of that in season 2.

Did anyone else think many of the fight scenes followed the same beats a little too often? By that, I mean a fight would go something like "Matt and Guy fight. Guy gets the upper hand. Matt then has moment of inspiration and comes back hard to defeat Guy."

Despite all that, I swear I really, really liked the show :)

Apart from the costume I loved everything in Season 1. Season 2 will be insane with Elektra and Punisher. I hope they get Stick back for few episodes as well.

I actually like the mentally challenged take they have on Gladiator more than the one in the comics. It seperates a small supporting character from the other characters in the show, making him stand out.

Actually, i used to have a neighbor who was mentally challenged and he would make things too. He even made us a homemade go cart once.

That's cool, but I do have reservations. Punisher, Electra and now Gladiator? How many other characters are we going to get while still carrying out quality storylines for all of them? I'm going still be excited, but I hope Daredevil Season 2 doesn't turn out to be the Iron Man 2 of the Defenders.

@SauronsBane

Pretty much nailed it. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes, but there was a lurch sometime very late, and it was like it was almost a different show.

I don't know if this is actually hinting at anything. The schematic has DAREDEVIL SUIT written on it and the buzz saw just seems like a reference to the fact that Melvin made the suit.

I'm excited about season 2, but at the same time I hope they don't rest on their laurels and think the cool new characters will carry the show. They've still gotta strive to write a great story and keep raising the bar of quality.
