For actress Wunmi Mosaku, who plays original character Hunter B-15, Loki isn't exactly her first trip into blockbuster territory as she previously appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Nor is it her first trek into deep sci-fi storytelling, as she also starred in an episode of Black Mirror. This show is a whole new beast, though, as she now finds herself working for Marvel Studios.
However, thanks to leading man Tom Hiddleston (Avengers: Endgame; Thor: Ragnarok) and co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show; Belle), both of whom she's known for the better part of the last two decades since they were all at drama school together, she found the experience to be a whole lot more comfortable than she was anticipating.
With most of her early scenes taking place opposite Hiddleston, Mosaku expressed gratitude that he was there to help bring her into the Marvel family. "It was great, very easy because there’s a short-hand already because we know and trust each other and you can be a little more vulnerable with each other and say ‘I’m scared," when I was scared or nervous about certain scenes, nervous about stunts, and I really felt like I had a friend who I could call on to help me. That was really, really great."
While she understandably has a contentious relationship with the God of Mischief, a lot of her early scenes actually take place opposite veteran actor and comedic legend Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers; Zoolander), a fellow MCU newcomer who she found to be an absolute joy to work with and ended up learning a lot from.
"He’s so easy, he’s so easy in front of the camera. He’s just got this real natural quality to everything that he does and he’s also not afraid to improvise and play around and make it better. So, yeah, again a real joy to work with. He and I work a lot together in the show because we’re the TVA and I really just had a ball. I had a ball getting to know him, I had a ball watching him work and yeah, I felt like I learned a lot."
As for how working with Marvel Studios differs from her experience on the aforementioned DC title and the Harry Potter spinoff, she tells us:
"I mean I feel like joining Marvel sounds very intimidating because it’s Marvel and they have such a huge fanbase and they make great films and I really wanted to be apart of the MCU from the moment I saw Black Panther and so, it was kind of scary, but then, Marvel, MCU, off-camera, everyone is so lovely and it’s so normal, and it doesn’t feel intimidating. It feels like a family, friendly and easy, so yeah, I honestly was scared, but as soon as I walked in, I knew I didn’t have anything to be scared of. Not from those guys anyway. *laughs*
Also, it’s a different role, no one’s ever played B-15 because B-15 is a new character so there’s a little less pressure as well because there’s no expectation."
