Quentin Tarantino Explains Why He Decided Not To Direct A LUKE CAGE Movie

After making his small screen debut last month in Jessica Jones, Luke Cage is going to star in his own Netflix series in 2016. However, the Hero for Hire was once destined for the big screen, and the director Quentin Tarantino talks about who and what his take would have included...

Mike Colter is now our Luke Cage, but in the early '90s, Quentin Tarantino wanted Man of Steel and Hannibal star Laurence Fishburne to take on the role of the Marvel superhero in a movie which would have come out shortly after Reservoir Dogs. The filmmaker even spoke with rights holder Ed Pressman about making Luke Cage a reality, but ended up taking the helm of Pulp Fiction instead. "In the case of Luke Cage, it was my comic geek friends that almost talked me out of it, because I thought Larry Fishburne back in the day would’ve been a great Luke Cage, and they were talking about Wesley Snipes," The Hateful Eight director said. "I could see them both, but it was like ‘I think Fish would be better.’ And they go ‘Yeah… he could work out and everything, but he doesn’t have the bod that Wesley Snipes has, and Luke Cage needs to have the bod.’"

To be fair, it's hard to imagine a comic book fan on the planet who would be against the idea of Snipes taking on the role of Luke Cage in the '90s, but it turns out that the studio's insistence on an actor with the right "bod" is what put him off and led to him deciding to ditch the idea of helming a superhero movie. "And I literally was so turned off that that would be their both starting and ending point, that it literally put it in my head that, if I do a comic book movie, it should be an original character. It should be something I create rather than try to fit in." Do you wish we'd got a Tarantino helmed Luke Cage movie? As always, let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

The only bad part is Wesley Snipes is pretty small guy in real life

I met the guy in person awhile back and I'm 6'2, Wesley was like 5'9 or 5'10!!!!

Luke Cage has to be 6'3 or taller to pull off

We know not would've been a homage to old 70s blaxploitation films with a modern setting. Kinda like Jackie Brown. Would've been cool to see but I love what Marvel is doing with the character.

I'd still love to see a wild and raunchy blaxploitation Luke Cage film. I think it could be very cool of sone right. Tarantino would be the man to do it. Maybe he could some film shorts wth Cage in a blaxploitation setting? A lot like Punisher: Dirty Laundry.

I'm guessing a Tarantino Luke Cage movie would have sucked, it would have been way too dark.

Good thing, luke cage is too much of an inferior character for a guy like Quentin to handle.

Not a fan of Tarantino's films, but that's about personal taste more than it is about dissecting his choices. I'm happy with what we're getting, though. Jessica Jones was really good, and I enjoyed Luke in it.

Hateful Eight was amazing, so I'm glad he spent his time wisely. Marvel would have put a thousand restrictions on what he could do. It wouldn't come out a Tarantino film.

Yes to a QT created Superhero.

No to a QT DCEU/MCU movie.

QT is too... QT.

Screw Colonel Sanders, Norm McDonald should play QT in a biopic.

I think the obvious thing would be to get him to guest direct an episode of the Netflix show, and if he enjoys the experience, take it from there. Have him do more, maybe.
And while we're at it, how about getting some guest directors on Daredevil? Darren Aronofsky springs to mind, straight away. Then there's Scorcese, David O. Russell...
The list is endless.

Guest directors, Netfilx!!! Who wouldn't wanna play in that sandbox?

@KurtWagner1225 I think it NEEDS to happen. Luke and Danny work better when together. Merging there shows would allow for more room to create other Netflix MCU shoWS like Moon Knight or Punisher.
