MS. MARVEL Promo Image Provides A First Official Look At Iman Vellani In Full Costume

An image of a Ms. Marvel standee has found its way online, giving us a first look at star Iman Vellani fully suited-up as the teenage hero. Plus, it looks like those new powers have been confirmed!

We're still waiting on a trailer for Ms. Marvel, but we do now have a new look at Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in full costume thanks to a promotional standee for the Disney+ series.

We've seen several set photos of the actress suited-up, of course, but this marks our first "official" glimpse of the teenage hero. The image would also seem to confirm that Khan will boast some new abilities when she makes her live-action debut.

A rumor recently did the rounds that this take on the character will utilize purple light-constructs in a similar fashion to Green Lantern, and Kamala certainly appears to be powering-up some sort of violet-tinged light on her left arm. Whether she will also retain her elasti-powers from the comic books remains to be seen.

In the comics, Khan acquires her powers from exposure to the Inhuman Terrigen Mists, but we're hearing the show will retcon this part of her origin (no surprise there) to make her abilities magic in nature.

No premiere date for Ms. Marvel has been announced, but it is expected to hit Disney+ before the end of the year.

I don't know how I feel about the energy construct powers. Maybe it was budget reasons.

@comicfan100 - budget would be a weird reason given the mcu shows we've had so far.

Personally I think they both want the stretching powers to be exclusive to Mr fantastic, and they want her powers to be energy based like the other marvels.

@comicfan100 - Ditto. It would be like calling Parker Spiderman and then making him sorcerer supreme...oh, wait? All kidding aside I guess they're hoping the persona will eclipse the change in powerset. It would have been a good time to do what studios have been embracing lately, which is pretend like movies/shows (Inhumans) never happened and reboot from a certain point. Even if you don't want to focus on them it would be there for future use.

@comicfan100 - Stretchy powers are notoriously difficult in live-action, so I can see why it would spook them on a TV budget.

Green Lantern style "construct" extensions of her body would accomplish effectively the same action beats, so I can understand them making the change, but it just feels like the kind of compromise that we didn't have to do anymore, you know? Changing a character's powers to be easier to CG is early-2000's energy.

I'm guessing the new powers is to distance her from Inhumans and maybe put her closer to Carol and Monica with energy based powers?

cerrone6 - 8/2/2021, 12:19 PM
@JoeInTheBox - why distant herself from Inhumans?
And please don't tell me of Ike permitted thing.
My thing is why do a show based on a character if you don't go the while 9 yards on thier comic orientation??

JoeInTheBox - 8/2/2021, 12:26 PM
@cerrone6 - Just a theory since they have yet to introduce Inhumans in the MCU. Also with the Marvels movie coming up, energy based powers puts her more in league with the other characters. Not to mention Fantastic Four coming and you have another character with stretchy powers.

I don't agree with the change, but I can see a reasoning for it. I bet they'll save her embiggen powers for The Marvels(budgetary reasons, character growth, more toys sales, etc).

@cerrone6 - I'd imagine that's more about wanting to do a proper separate introduction of The Royal Family rather than having this show have to do the heavy lifting of introducing an entire race of aliens

Can see how that draws inspiration from Captain Marvel's suit, I like it.

Do hope she get's her elasti-powers though.

Slotherin - 8/3/2021, 7:05 AM
@dragon316 - personally I don't care if Taskmaster is a man or woman, only if the character ends up serving a more similar role to the comics moving forward.

@Toonstrack - I would be disappointed on behalf of her fans but personally I have always had a hard time taking stretching powers seriously. Just can’t do it. Reed Richards. Elastic Man. Stretch Armstrong. Ms Marvel.
Hard pass.

@ElvenKingSlayer - unstable molecules. Reed treated all the FF’s personal clothing with it so they could use their powers whenever they wanted. Gotta assume the movies handed things in the same manner.
ElvenKingSlayer
ElvenKingSlayer - 8/3/2021, 6:51 AM
@PerrinNation1 - Yeah in the comics. I never got a feeling Reed figured out how to do this in the movies. It was never adressed.
