MS. MARVEL: Kevin Feige Explains Why Kamala Khan's Powers Were Changed; New Still Released

During a new interview, Marvel Studios head chief Kevin Feige reveals why the decision was made to alter Kamala Khan's abilities for the upcoming Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. We also have a new still...

The first teaser for Ms. Marvel made it pretty clear that the title character's power-set would be significantly altered for her live-action debut, with Kamala Khan's (Iman Vellani) "embiggening" abilities from the comic books getting a Green Lantern-like overhaul.

There was speculation that her body-morphing powers may have been changed because they were a little too similar to Reed Richards', and while there may be some truth to that, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige offered a different explanation during an interview with Empire.

“We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation,” Feige tells the mag. “[Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match.”

“What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU,” he continues. “You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences. If you want big, giant hands and arms, well they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.”

It's also been theorised that Kamala's abilities may have been tweaked to suit her new origin (no Terrigen Mist), and Feige confirmed as much while hinting that the source of her powers will continue to be addressed in The Marvels.

“It taps into the future of her story as it connects to her other friends that she will meet in the upcoming film The Marvels. She’s interested in knowing, ‘Great, does that mean I’m an Asgardian? Did I get hit with gamma rays?’ No, it’s seemingly none of those things. It goes to her own past and her heritage and lineage.”

Check out a new still from Ms. Marvel below.

"Ms. Marvel is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City," reads the updated synopsis. "An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?"

Ms. Marvel also stars Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha.

Ah yes, because stretchy hands are sooooo 2013.
Seriously though, I never understood why so many people talk shit about Kamala's powers.

@PapaSpank54 - and in the same breath look forward to seeing Mr fantastic. Why couldn't they just say it's because they want to differentiate between her and Mr fantastic? Or make her powers more in line with captain marvel? I'd buy both of those over this.

@Origame - He is right tho. It doesn't make sense to introduce her as an Inhuman now.

@Origame - Maybe because they may change MrF too

@Drace24 - ...but this is in the discussion of her powers, not the origins of them. She doesn't need to be inhuman to have those powers.

@Havenless - no way are they changing his powers too.

@Origame - But that's what he's talking about.

@Drace24 - ...nothing here says anything about inhumans. Just the time the comic was released in.

Besides, the origin of the powers changing is a stupid reason to change the powers themselves. And this is evident by Mr fantastic, another character in this universe with the same powers yet has no ties to the inhumans.

@Origame - The time the comic was released in was when Marvel had a popular Inhumans run and no Fantastic Four run. So they decided to have Kamala tie into the Inhumans and had no problem giving her elasticity powers because they didn't plan on using Mr Fantastic anytime soon.
That worked out then, but it does not now, because the MCU is at a different spot. The Inhumans as a concept have not been properly established (No, I will not debate the canonicity-status of AoS or that failed Inhumans show with you) and Mr Fantastic is about to have his own proper introduction into the MCU very soon.

So they probably just don't want to make Kamala an Inhuman before introducing them, nor do they want her to have the same powers as Mr Fantastic shortly before he is being introduced. Seems like a pretty straight forward strategy. No idea what's not to get.

"And this is evident by Mr fantastic, another character in this universe with the same powers yet has no ties to the inhumans."

Lol. You are THIS close to an epiphany.

@PapaSpank54 - I think its too early to tell - whilst this series will use the bands as a source of power or means to channel what's inside her, this may not be the final say on her powers. Feige mentions her heritage - If he is going where I think with this and it somehow alludes to the Kree (and possibly only someone with Inhuman/Kree DNA can use the bands) then at some point in the future, she may still go through Terrigenisis - This would only occur after the Inhumans have been introduced, maybe with the Human Torch / Crystal storyline.
I could be completely wrong about all this, but knowing that Marvel often play the long game ....... I think bears thinking about.

And I can't believe you read that comment without getting an epiphany yourself.

@PapaSpank54 - I really don't know what the embiggen deal is either.

@Origame - Like I keep saying: The live action adaptations are not the comics. And this is precisely what Feige just said.

It's really that simple.

This is just nonsense Kevo. Will Reed Richards shoot lasers out of his orifices or is his comic continuity just a bit more fluid for yall?
