We know very little about what to expect from the Secret Invasion series coming to Disney+, though Marvel Studios has managed to assemble an incredible cast of actors. Oscar-winner Olivia Colman is on board, while Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn are set to reprise their respective roles as Nick Fury and Talos.
Joining them are Game of Thrones alum Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir, though we can currently only speculate about who these latest additions to the MCU are actually playing!
Now, Murphy's Multiverse is reporting that Colman is "portraying a mysterious spy with a commanding 'Fury-esque' presence." The site believes that Secret Invasion is going to be a "spy-heavy" series, which is a good indication that we're not getting a direct adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu's superhero-filled comic book event series.
They add that, "Like Fury, Colman’s character will be a bit of a puppeteer who does and has done a lot of her dirty work behind the scenes." It's said that as well as being a key part of Secret Invasion, Colman is set to return to the MCU in future projects; now, we can't help but wonder whether she's playing S.W.O.R.D. Director Abigail Brand instead of Clarke (as many have speculated).
Secret Invasion promises to be another potential game-changer for the MCU, and if we get a full-blown Skrull invasion of Earth, we're no doubt going to be left asking, "Who Can You Trust?"
In the comic books, this referred to the superheroes that had secretly been replaced by the shape-shifting aliens, with Hank Pym, Hawkeye, and Jessica Jones among those revealed to be Skrull agents. Needless to say, an after-credits scene with a similarly massive reveal about a fan-favourite superhero being replaced would be huge heading further into Phase 4 and Phase 5.
