Marvel Studios brought Secret Invasion to D23, dropping an intriguing first trailer for the Disney+ series (you can check that out by clicking here).
The espionage thriller, which appears to be a far cry from the comic book event it borrows its name from, revolves around a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury appears to be the only one capable of stopping their invasion, though he's going to need some help.
While we still don't know exactly how Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill and Emilia Clarke's unnamed character will factor into the show, the trailer makes it clear that Don Cheadle's Colonel James Rhodes will be a key part of proceedings. War Machine's role here came as a surprise to fans, though the prevailing theory is that Rhodey may have been replaced by a Skrull imposter!
We'll see, but Marvel Studios has today shared some stills from Secret Invasion, with the official descriptions from Disney finally confirming the identities of some key players.
For starters, we now know that Olivia Colman is playing Special Agent Sonya Falsworth. A newly created character for the MCU, we have to believe she's related to Captain America: The First Avenger's Howling Commando, James Montgomery Falsworth. He didn't become Union Jack in that movie, and we doubt Colman will suit up as that hero either.
However, we wouldn't be surprised if Sonya is related to someone who could become the MCU's Union Jack!
It's also been confirmed that Kingsley Ben-Adir is playing "Rebel Skrull leader Gravik," another newly created character for Secret Invasion. He's clearly set to be this show's lead villain, and it's a little surprising Marvel Studios didn't pluck out one of the many Skrulls from the comic books to take charge of these invaders. There may be a good reason for that, though.
